Well, thanks to you I fitted my clutch!! I am not a mechanic, 5.5 hours having never done a front wheel drive clutch before. Mine is right hand drive, I opted to leave the steering rack connected to the vehicle & drop the sub frame only but I could not have done it without this amazing piece of video. Many thanks. I would advise anyone not to be scared of this job :-)

Mod MINI- I bought a 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible (R52) for my son for his first car. After we bought it we figured out it needed a new clutch. To be honest I was distraught about this. I am not a mechanic but am somewhat mechanical. After watching your 2 part video I felt completely confident that I could do it. And just so you know, I did it and now feel that I understand this little beauty a whole lot better. I would not have been able to do it without your video(s) and wanted to say thank you for taking the time to help out "shade tree" mechanics like myself! God Bless!

+Mod MINI Absolutly, I know how much work goes into making these videos. I don't have the trans back in the car yet as it fell off the jack this morning and broke the bracket that holds the shift cables (dumb mistake on my part) but I hope to have it back on the road in the next couple of days. THANKS AGAIN!

If I ever met you good sir, I’d owe you many a beer (or coffee). 2 years back, I used your videos to do my very first ever clutch job on my beloved r53. If I couldn’t do it myself, I’d have to get rid of the car as I had no money to pay someone. I followed your videos to the T and successfully installed and used that clutch for a long time! Today, I’ve come back to this video, as I need to fill my mk1 Audi TT with trans fluid, and I forgot the trick with the air, but remembered who had it! Thanks so much man!

Many thanks for your excellent clutch/fly wheel replacement, drive shaft removal, supercharger service and power steering explanations. As I first-timer, I did the lot in one go. Your videos made the daunting tasks approachable; almost easy, as I knew what to expect when I saw it. My transmission, with a new Valeo single mass FW kit, went straight back in first time and is much better than the original. However, it was the hoses and pipe clamps and the electrical connections and clips (especially the "octopus" on top of the transmission, which I eventually managed to loosen for better access) that took ages to take apart without breaking them and to put back together in the right order. I took a days longer than 9 hours. More of your cut-away images or better lighting and a few directions on how to get these bits free would help going forwards. I am immensely grateful for your guidance and now know my car a lot better. Many thanks again. PS. For UK (right-hand drive cars/drivers), Haynes (my standard reference) does not appear to mention removing the sub-frame but doing so, makes the whole process a lot easier.
@ModMINI

The only way to remove clutch without removing subframe is to take entire powertrain out together and then separate transmission from engine on the bench.

I know this video is old but I just replaced my clutch and front crankshaft pulley in my daughter's 2005 Mini Cooper s. A couple of things I want to let others know is in higher mileage car I replaced the thermostat since I was right there with the air box removed. I also bought a bunch of panel fasteners for cheap and that is a labor and time saver. By this time those things are getting pretty old and more than half snap or spin. Just drill them out and replace. I removed the hood since I have a cherry picker and not the brace shown. Still used a strap on the transmission to position it. That is a great tip. Finally my intercooler horn rubber was old and when I started up the engine it whined like crazy and ran rough. Changed out to new boots and all was well. All in all I'm in it for about 500 dollars and the shops want north of 4k.

Thanks to your video instructions I've been driving reliably with the Valeo clutch for the past month. And, as you suggested, I changed the front suspension ball joints and bushings too, and the serpentine belt, and the belt tensioner, and the crank position sensor o-ring. The most difficult part was getting the rusted fasteners out of the bumper cover, and repairing the consequential damage to the plastic bits. I finally selected RockAuto.com as a source for delivering the parts to my door in Montreal at a reasonable price. Local sources were quoting over $900 for the Valeo clutch kit!! I'm jealous of how clean your garage remains during the repairs. I had to wash my floors twice, and go through 4 changes of work clothes during the repairs. Must be due to the Quebec winters. Thanks for these most excellent video instructions.

Vel Oce I think the camera fails to caputure how messy the garage gets during repairs. But I probably spill less than most people; with experience I know where the fluids are going to go. I'm also tripping over tools and parts all the time.

Thanks for your great videos, I've been watching for years... I'm on my 5th R53 JCW in the last 2 years, but the first four weren't around long enough to wrench on, due to bad timing. Finally got what I hope is a long termer (1 of 301 JCW Checkmates with Aero). I also put a deposit on another JCW last week from a dealer in Portland near you, but they were terrible to work with and I've asked for my deposit back... I'm still bummed on that one, perfect spec BRG. I agree with you on the current GP BaT auction! Gotta put those stock wheels on the collector grade cars! Again, really appreciate your R53 content here on KZbin!

Thank you for an awesome video on the S clutch replacement and also, for the one on the supercharger maintenance. We have an 05 S convertible. My wife bought it used and the clutch was not good from the beginning (but we did not know how it was supposed to be), then it started slipping just as you described. I went with the Valeo conversion, did the rear main seal, the crank position sensor, as well as the supercharger maintenance. I chose to pull the supercharger off before pulling the transmission and did not reinstall it until the transmission was back in. This seemed to give fairly good access to the bell housing bolts. I kept my iPad in the garage with me and kept referring to the video as I progressed. The job, though time consuming, went very smoothly thanks to you. I did find quite a few loose fasteners along the way, tightening them seems to have helped with the many rattles. My wife’s only complaint now is that the clutch peddle feels too light!!! I think that it is great. Thanks again... Oh ya. The flywheel was toast and the release bearing looked like it was ready to explode.

I am subscribing. Tip: hang onto the old pressure plate and clutch alignment tool. You can use the plate to create a coupler for an electric motor in case your ICE engine fails and you want to spend the next 3 years converting. (Ha ha - but really, I am in the 3rd year of converting my Sunbeam Alpine to electric at the moment. So much to learn.)

First of all, great videos. You are a great help to many amateur mechanics out there. I did this job on my '04 S a while back and had no luck lining up the transmission with the engine when it went back in. I didn't have a trans jack and it would not sit right on my floor jack. There is not a flat spot on that thing! My son noticed that loop cast into the top of the transmission. if you lift it from there the transmission hangs at a perfect angle to align. We got it close from below and then used a cherry picker and grabbed that loop from above and mating the two was a breeze. That is obviously what the loop is for but nobody tells you that.

I have a 2004 Mini Cooper S from Oct. 2003. Do you know the Valeo part number? Thanks!! Again, the video was awesome. I had no idea you had to pretty much take the whole front end off. LOL!! I followed your guide to replace my clutch in my 2006 r53 and it was great, the step by step nature of this video really helped me get through it without making any major mistakes. The car drives like a totally different car now because of the new clutch and other mods/maintenance I did while I had it apart (poly control arm bushings, supercharger oil, ball joints, hubs, strut top hats, short shifter, rear sway bar, a few other that I'm sure I'm forgetting). The best part is how light the clutch pedal is, I never knew it could be this light! it probably takes less than half the force to push down (probably caused by the throwout bearing that was in like 15 pieces but still functioning somehow). The car started and drove with zero issues first try! I can see why many shops said they didn't want to even attempt the clutch, but your job made it possible with ease! Thanks Mod MINI!

I’m a novice at this, but I finally got the tranny out of my 2004 Mini Cooper S today. It was leaking oil and not engaging when letting the clutch out. I picked this up at a salvage yard and was hoping the problem wasn’t the tranny but today I found the problem. There was a lot of metal in the bell housing, shavings and bigger chunks that looked like gear pieces. There was also a hole about 1” in diameter inside the bell housing where the gear box is. Thats probably where the oil was coming from. So It looks like I need a new tranny :( . Any ideas on what caused this blowout? It looks like a Valeo clutch kit has been put in this car. When taking the tranny bolts off I noticed the 2 top bolts were loose, one was almost complete out. Probably an oversight from the previous mechanic.

excellent details on your work, you can tell you've done this many times. I do have a question regarding my 2005 Mini Cooper with manual transmission. I noticed the outer bell housing has a pin hole and hairline crack where oil could leak out. I repaired the pin home and crack with JB weld which held but after putting 1 quart of oil back in the transmission I noticed oil leaking out between the engine and transmission where the two join. any thoughts on why this may be happening? the transmission seems to still shift ok, but before I go out and get a transmission shop to look at it I'd like to have an idea of what could be the cause. thanks for your help.

Mark Dutton There is a temperature sensor near the top rear bell housing bolt, on right side of cylinder head near the bottom (as viewed when standing in front of the car). You might have to remove intake box to get enough access to resolve. Also, be sure to burp for air bubbles.

I wish more people would make automotive videos like this. Detailed, calm, lots of great info and care. As far as clutch jobs go, this one looks to be one of the more involved ones, but you make it look simple. How many hours total would you estimate you worked on this? I know it's an old video, so just a ballpark would be great. Thanks!

@@ModMINI great point. So, how long does it take you if you're not dealing with filming now? I'm trying to get prepared. I plan on not taking off the front end and I will drop the subframe, move the exhaust back out of the way, and I will use the support bar from above. I have a 2 ton engine lift I can use which might be useful for the bell housing lowering and raising when putting it back. I am planning on it taking 2 or 3 days for me to do it by first time, but maybe with some more studying I can do it quicker than my pessimistic voice in my head tells me I can. Still, I'm curious what your time is not counting video recording. It isn't a competition, but sure would like to know what it takes the guru. Lol

Thanks for the awesome instructional videos. Could you comment on the value of buying a kit having a replacement clutch plate, pressure plate, and bearing, without the flywheel? In your experience, how much damage have you seen on flywheels that would warrant their replacement? Kits without the flywheel seem to be about half the cost (including shipping).
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 жыл бұрын
Vel Oce For a Cooper S, I recommend replacing the flywheel as well. Even on lower mileage cars you will get dual mass chatter (Chewbacca noise) on cold starts. My recommendation is the Valeo solid flywheel conversion kit. On this kit, the springs are in the clutch disk instead of the flywheel. This reduces the flywheel weight by about 2 pounds and makes for a crisper driving experience. Everyone who I have installed a Valeo kit for is very satisfied - I have one in my car as well - it makes 244HP power and no slipping issues. amzn.to/1zthwOL

This video seems great. I'm going to attempt to do the same thing this winter. Not my daily driver so not too much pressure into getting it done in a quick fashion. The one question I have is related to the transmission, it's on the shift lever. So right now, to get to 5th/6th, not only is it incredibly stiff, but there is no position feeling whatsoever. What I mean by that is that I have to really push hard to the right to get into the 5th/6th side, and the little feel in neutral going both ways, is non existent on that side. I wonder if there is anything else I should be looking at while I have it all apart. Thanks!
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 10 жыл бұрын
Your shift cable boots are probably worn/torn. Figure out which one is responsible for horizontal motion and inspect/replace that one. If it isn't that, there may be some issue with the notches inside the transmission?
@duarteavelar3949

*****, thanks for the suggestion. I hope it's not something in the transmission, not sure what I could do besides having it rebuilt or replaced. Do you think I can figure out once the transmission is out if it's not just a boot thing? Thanks again.
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 10 жыл бұрын
Duarte Avelar The transmission is pretty easy to crack open if you think there might be internal wear. Use anaerobic sealer when sealing the two halves back up.

Hi, I used the old shaft seal to hit the new one in place (wrong choice), now the seal is deeper insert, he's against the engine block ... I have 5.6mm between de seal and the end of the shaft. Do you think that can give me a problem? Do I have it to replace again with a new one ? Big thankx for yours videos! Just amazing. I have found my answer, and it's an yes, i have to replace it...

Hi again,excellent video,just wondering how far the main seal should be tapped in,I think this is my problem as to why it leaked,when I removed flywheel the seal wasnt flush with the engine block,it was sitting like 5mm out from the engine block towards the flywheel,so dose it just sit flush with the block or dose it sit a few mil deeper.. if it was the original seal I'd have a reference but unfortunately not in this case

Tap until flush with machined edge. Farther in won't hurt as long as it's even all the way around. Sticking out can't be good.

I used a pry bar to try and force it in but got to the point where I thought I was going to break it. Any suggestions would be great. Great tip on using the ratchet strap to hold the trans. It made it possible for me to do this by myself. Have you ever tried the method of getting longer bolts that fit the bellhousing, cutting the heads off and using them as guide pins?
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 жыл бұрын
Rich Johnstun, I usually just manhandle it until it goes on enough for the stock bolts to thread on a couple of threads. I've found that using guide pins sometimes restricts ability to wiggle the transmission around which is sometimes needed to get the splines to line up. The MINI transmission is light enough, that I've found ratchet method is sufficient usually - I just get it in the air, then get under it and wrestle with it until it goes in. Usually takes less than 5 minutes. I keep a couple bell housing bolts nearby and quickly thread them in to avoid transmission slipping back off.
@RichJohnstun
@RichJohnstun 9 жыл бұрын
That's what I ended up doing yesterday when I put mine back in. I was fighting it finally just got pissed and started really manhandling it, that's when it dropped in. I was being to ginger. The car is back together and driving. Man, that Valeo clutch feels so completely different that the factory unit. I'm going to have to learn how to drive my car again.
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 жыл бұрын
+Rich Johnstun just don't be too rough, you could bend the friction disk. The new clutch is great. Actually, a brand new stock clutch is fairly soft as well. They get stiff over time and people don't notice because it happens so slowly.

As I write this my son has got his car in at a garage in Bristol to have the clutch replaced. The labour element alone is £600. The total job being around £1000. Although I’m pretty good and mechanically minded, there isn’t a chance in hell I would tackle this job. What an arse this is . You must view both parts of the filming as it’s really interesting. Just an aside point, how did the Prodrive guys modify their two world rally cars so you could change a gearbox and clutch in 15 minutes? I’d love to know

Thanks for the vid Kurt, ........Steve from the UK, A bit of advice please, i beleive my clutch is beginning to fail as when changing quickly from 4 - 5th and getting back on gas it seems to over rev for 2-3 secs before taking up drive, would this be an indication clutch is shot? Also was the comp clutch you used a LUK part Thanks
