Man - I'm so torn on this, because the quality/feel of the Chromatic is what appeals to me, but from a tech standpoint, it's so much less when compared to the Analogue Pocket. I know for a FACT that most, if not all, of the batteries in my GB/GBC games are toast. Save states are a must for me at this point.

It's a tough decision for sure. If you want authenticity/nostalgia/build quality this wins. Emulation, bigger screen, save/loads then AP.

@@RetroDodo The Chromatic and Analog Pocket BOTH use FPGA hardware emulation. The Pocket is not a software emulation device. The Chromatic is not "more authentic" than the Pocket, just for clarity. If you want authentic, buy an original.

No one has compared the colors on the screen between an original gameboy color. Gameboy color always gave out unique colors when in direct sunlight. Wish someone would adress it.

Love the use of standard AA “alkaline” batteries. IMO the use of AAs simply allows more options including hot swapping for fresh AAs available almost everywhere or economical rechargeable AAs. My original GameBoy still fires up with fresh AAs to this day. I preordered the Midnight Chromatic and looking forward to it. Again, love options but pretty confident the Analogue Pocket will remain my got to for “retro” games.

Thanks for the review and not comparing it to all the obviously similar devices like so many of the other reviews out there. This thing is not perfect, but it for sure is a certain type of awesomely nostalgic GBC artwork. If you are someone this appeals to and who "digs" this kind of thing, then IMO $200 dollars is completely reasonable for the evident quality of workmanship - and the artistry.

@richardwatson5730 Unfortunately it seems that as of now the EverDrive GB X7 does not work on the Chromatic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYLbloqfnL6nedE&si=hF7CtxGY8F5ZtdE- Just like software emulation, hardware emulation is only as accurate as the developers programming it make it and the Chromatic still needs a bit of work it seems. I'll definitely pick one up when they get EverDrive support working though! =)

100% the Analogue is a better deal. Rechargeable battery, better quality, better screen, ROMs, different FPGA cores, GBA cart support, plethora of non-Nintendo cart support via adaptors, etc.. Besides, this product is just a much more expensive version of the DIY FPGA boards that are easy to build on your own.

​@Festivus_Miracle Better quality than sapphire crystal and metal? You're crazy. Besides that, it is more future proofed. It's not hard to get batteries AND they are more easily replaceable. It's not hard to get rechargeable batteries like the paleblue ones. Just take a look at phones to realize anything made with an internal battery is automatically not built to last lol. The adaptors are way to bulky to be actually worth anything and if you are interested in a product like this you probably already own other options for emulation. I want something to play my actual cartridges on besides my gameboy. The analogue has a "better" screen but that's unnecessary considering scaling for anything else besides game boy isn't going to work as good anyway. Plus my friend has a pocket and I never liked how exposed the cartridges were. Makes it very easy to bump them out of place. I also have my ds lite to play gba anyway. If your only device is going to be a pocket then sure that might be the better option but otherwise I have a hard time agreeing with anything you are saying.

Warranty is there for a reason, so within its span you can have it repaired by the seller and/or manufacturer without extra charge...right to repair is rrlated to prevent policies or sw/hw solutions that make it harder or impossible on purpose. check out the FPGBC. It's exactly what you want. Screen is just as good, with an option to make the screen bigger than original, color palettes swappable by menu, gb only mode,, plastic shell literally based off the GBC, usb-c rechargable battery, half the price, same FPGA hardware so the same hardware emulation between the two. And I've never seen it sold out.

I actually think if the back had been one thickness then running over it would have been fine. But, because the system is two different thicknesses down the back, it means it will tilt at some point while driving over it and put a massive amount of pressure that would ultimately cause it to bend around where it becomes thin and right in line with the screen. So, yeah, wasn't buying the driving over with car marketing. Still, it looks as solid as any handheld I've seen, so it is what it is.

Its not for nostalgia, its for future proofing. You can put rechargeable batterries in there if you want. Most lithium ion packs are proprietary sizes/designs and wear out after a few years. They are much harder to replace.

I see it as two things this does, that others don't: magnesium alloy shell standard (if you like that sort of thing), and AA batteries You can get a CNC'd aluminium shell for the Analaogue Pocket for 190$. With that in mine, this Chromatic isn't a bad deal. But only if you really want the metal shell.

where's the 240p test suite. does it have IR functionality so you can use the pokemon pikachu 1/2. Is the clock speed right, will it keep actual time with a real gameboy? do flash carts like the EZ flash or everdrive work? what about the flicker they used for transparent sprites like the chain on bow-wow in links awakening? , are there any frame drops when walking in pokemon? i hope Mahko get's ahold of this and does some real tests

Judging by the videos, and the main reason I was interested in this thing, it seems that they put a LOT of effort into that screen. Sure you can have a screen with the same resolution, or pixels, or size. Or double, triple, or even ten times the original, but if it doesn’t look the part, there is almost no reason to not just play it on a pc, or a steam deck. This gets it right, it has the lines, I want to see my sub pixels! Every part of them! That’s what I like about the GBA, and the DS systems! I ordered one today, I heard the guy who makes them is unliked for many reasons, but at this point I don’t care. I own a iphone, I use windows, I’ll get over it.

I've heard some people say the screen is not as good as they say! Plus I don't see the appeal in copying the one thing that made the original so bad and that was the screen! In my opinion the analouge pockets screen is as close to perfection as you can get other than it not being oled it is the best screen out there! Who wants a small crappy resolution screen that copy's all the originals flaws. They should of made a custom 3.0 inch oled screen with some awesome filters like the pocket. It's funny the one thing everyone does with the original is upgrade the screen and now they are trying to copy the originals crappy screen. I understand it's good for purists but we are spoiled nowadays with good high rez screens why not make something with a more modern beautiful high res screen instead. I think some people are probably not going to like this screen.

This is cool and all, but why are so many of these devices popping up for the GBC/ GB but never the GBA which arguably had the most success of those 3. Which is nuts when you consider the success that the other 2 had.

Because there was a ton of nostalgia after Red and Blue launched in the late 90’s with the gbc. To obtain this device was an upgrade to the gb and lots of the early millennials appreciate the fact that this device is what started the evolution to gba, even though it was more advanced and powerful in comparison, the pixel quality is something to admire about the gbc when it first started and the battery life was every reason to obtain one, but now that the fpgba immortalized and revamped this gem of a console gives every millennial and newcomers the chance to know what it felt like if the gbc had the backlight with the authentic experience behind it. But if this one is too expensive, I recommend the fpgbc.

I wanna spend my money on a brand new GBA with a correctly designed screen for its strange aspect ratio (honestly I think the real reason no one has tried this is because making a screen for the GBA that is designed just like the old GBA Screen but higher res like the Pocket did would be insanely expensive so they just don't)

If anyone would need nostalgia - just buy real GameBoy Color. If you need better screen and overall experience - Pocket Analogue. This device is something in the middle, not sure who needs it.

it is. If you don't care about having a metal shell, an FPGBC is much better deal, especially if you don't already have a gameboy.

The problem you have is when American companies bring their products to the UK, $199 translates into £199, plus VAT usually. And if you think it seems cheaper buying directly from Modretro, you're going to be shafted by ridiculous shipping costs + inevitable customs fees. We're always getting the shitty end of the stick.

Yes, I have a similar view. The price is also far too high compared to the Analogue Pocket and then there are the very high shipping costs. But otherwise a very interesting product. I particularly like the fact that you can run it on batteries.

Literally the only thing holding me off from buying this is the lack of an SD card. I don’t own any GBC games anymore (sold long ago…) and they’re extortionate to buy these days, and Pokemon ones esp. often have dead batteries. Ugh

Its awesome as hell, but i dont think i want to drop 200 bucks for this.....i mean i get it, its for the nostalgia feels and the quality build plus love and care given.....but idk, i just cant find a way to justify the price....i literally bought an Anbernic 406v for like 150 a month ago, and that thing pretty much plays everything i throw at it.....yeah i know its emulation so it shouldn't be compared at all.....but i think ill just stick with my 406v 😅
