Web DM I made a Modron PC race for my Homebrew, took away axiomatic mind, gave +2 to int, javelin proficiency, and then with each of the subtypes of Modron (Monodrone, Duodrone, etc.), and assigned each of them a +1 to a certain stat other than int, and proficiency with whatever weapon they used other than a javelin. For Tridrone I gave it a third hand, so that it could wield one more hand’s worth of weapons or shields, while of course making it unable to get an AC boost from fore than one shield.

Yeah, his name is RK Post. He's mostly known for MtG, but he got his start in illustration over at TSR and did a couple Planescape and Red Steel illustrations. I didn't get into D&D until I was already an adult, but he had all kinds of books from 3e and 2e that I would look at when I was little. He eventually gave me a bunch of books and box sets he had in storage, most of which was for AD&D. I still bust out my Ravenloft DM screen from time to time.

I just like the idea of Modrons that just have to do the basic tasks because they need to test if there any new laws of physics or alterations to the preexisting laws of physics. So you have a Modron that just goes around, slapping people in the face with a fish, a Modron that places hats on heads, a Modron that blasts a loud horn in your ear, and so on and so forth. And then of course, the Inevitables are a great way to scare your players at higher levels, just by having them suddenly show up, and ominously stare at the Characters the whole time they're doing their powerful stuff. Doesn't talk or interact, just watches. Players will probably never become more paranoid about every single one of their actions than when an Inevitable just shows up and observes you.

An interesting idea for a late-game scenario would be the modrons specifically requesting the PCs (being such powerful beings, assuming they are neutral or lawful) help escort them through the chaotic planes, as those lands contain the beings most dangerous to them, such as the slaad

The first thing I can think of with the Modrons is someone wanting some the information that the Modrons are collecting. Like oh say the number of soldiers in this other country or perhaps some sort arcane secrets. Not only do have to get access but now need to think of how this information is organized.
@JPruinc

Totally. There are all sorts of adventures to be had. Imagine being assigned to guard the Modron March. Primus sends out a call for adventures to guard his children on their journey. Now you and your party are traveling with this force through the planes with one goal....Get that info back to Mechanus!

Hey thanks for this! Modrons (and their related ilk) were one of those monsters in the MM that I could never really find a place for. The whole idea of a "benign" invasion force that is looking for things out of place is such a (dare I say) nifty idea! More to use as a way to challenge players in a new way. And if they try to murderhobo their way through 10,000 modrons, it may break them of that habit.

My idea for using modrons has been to use them as an in-game way to poke at dice-fudging and meta-gaming or even just those game mechanics that allow for messing with the basic game rules, like the Lucky feat... So the party begins attracting modron attention because they keep getting away with stuff that doesn't make logical sense. (Though now that I've listened to the episode, that's possibly more of an Inevitable role than a Modron one) I also like the idea of modrons observing a battle, running some calculations, and then telling the leaders the statistical results ("according to our calculations, your side will lose 24.7% of your troops and your opponents will lose 82.5% of their troops...") and trying to get them to allow the modrons to immediately vaporize the troops that would die so they could more efficiently resolve the battle. I think there was a Star Trek episode about that...

Now I wanna put them in to complicate justice, for irony's sake. like the modrons are known to just swoop in every once in a while and start going crazy, moving things around and cluttering streets and chucking EXACTLY 3 starfish at people to make sure gravity's affecting them correctly. but due to that, a crime wave has sprung up. People are stealing things and running before the owner figures out it's not just the duodron that's been stacking things on the dog. thugs are getting away in the madness caused when pentadrons decide to count everyone's hair RIGHT NOW. now the adventurers are being asked to help hunt down criminals, and figure out which cases actually ARE just the modrons rolling them under the bed.

I brought a huge squadron of modrons into my campaign when my PCs were lower level. They ended up going through the gate-like thing the pentadrone opened up, and now they are in mechanus. In order to save their own lives they pleaded to Primus to allow them to help him in his orderly conquest. Now they are turned into monodrones, and they need to bring Primus a substantial piece of evidence in order to move up the rank into duodrone. Then as a duodrone they need to bring two pieces of evidence to rank up and so on and so forth until they become a septadrone (I'm making stats for the hexadrones, septadrones, and Primus) at which point they will bring 7 pieces of good information and Primus will hold a trial for them (they don't know about the trial). The PCs caused the gate opening to stay open so Primus is a bit upset, but in his law he decides that it is just to hold a trial for them.

The funny thing about lawful creatures is they always end up doing something chaotic without realizing it and the chaotic creatures are lawful in that they are structured by their very nature they will be chaotic and changing which still follow a concept of change meaning they wil eventually do something lawful just out of randomness, making conflict between them eventually pointless.

I suppose it's because I'm a lawyer, but I tend to think of the differences between LG, LN and LE in terms of different types of judges (and in my campaigns, communities tend to employ or co-opt clerics of the lawful cults to be judges). Lawful Good judges, believing the rules are there to protect the weak and to promote kindness, would tend to resolve any ambiguities in the rules in favour of the weak. Lawful evil judges, believing that the rules are there to protect the strong and punish the weak, would tend to resolve any normative ambiguities in favour of the strong and the powerful. But lawful neutral judges believe the rules exist for their own sake, or at best, that the rules exist to promote order and stability. Thus a lawful neutral judges will happily go down the semantic rabbit-hole of taking the laws literally but, if they absolutely have to, a lawful neutral judge will resolve normative ambiguities in favour of whatever result that best protects the system of rules and its associated institutions as a whole.

another way to look at the regularly timed 'deaths' of modrons left behind during their march is that perhaps the corpses of modrons are like seeds of lawfulness which produce a stabilizing effect on the lands into which they decompose. in a place like Limbo it may seem as though the modrons are quickly and utterly destroyed ... and yet lawful modron particles have now infiltrated that plane of existence in large quantities. their presence may not be able to turn the tide of chaos toward law, yet their existence may mean just enough of a stabilization effect is occurring to keep the balance of opposites in place. not changing chaos into law, but preventing chaos from spreading wildly. while the lawful corpses decay where they fall, the spirits return to Mechanus to be reborn as modrons with exacting numerical precision. or, perhaps those spirits come from exclusive prime material worlds -- at any rate its clear that the number of modrons in Mechanus is a universal constant, never depleted or exceeding an exact standard.

How about using the Modrons to hint at celestial alignments that can mess up the world? So Modrons aren't necessarily an ally or an antagonist but if your players start encountering them that means that some great prophecy is about to be enacted that can only happen when the alignment that causes Modrons to march happens. The canary in a coal mine so to speak. I'm reminded of The Watcher from Marvel Comics or Pariah from Crisis On Infinite Earths in DC Comics. Characters that only appear when great tragedy or change is about to happen that while aren't antagonistic or necessarily even involved in the goings-ons of the multiverse do symbolize something worse to come.

OMG I GOT IT! The cosmic law exists to prevent horrible things from being unleashed. Going with the idea that the universe is a giant combination lock to keep Cthulhu etc locked up unless everything is aligned exactly one way. So a bunch of modrons come to clear cut a forest because that was one of the things needed to awaken cthulhu

Modron walks up to the queen and says, "So how long have you been a Succubus?" Queen declares war on the Modrons over the insult, local clergy starts investigating, peasant rebellion starts up and starts fighting both the queen and the modrons, fun times! You could also overlap the Modron March with a Demon Invasion. Or a Fiend invasion. Actually, Fiends might cooperate with Modrons as they're both lawful. Frankly, cooperating with Modrons might end up entertaining in their own right. "You want to count what now?""Damnit, we're in the middle of a siege, can't counting my nose hairs wait?" "How exactly do you could water?"

The idea of agents of cosmic law remind me of the Auditors from Discworld, especially in Thief of Time where they get foiled by logical paradoxes, and do things like destroy all of the paving stones in the road that aren't the exact right size for a paving stone to be.

Level 20 oneshot involving primus, Fighter cracks knuckles and says "I've got this guys" Walks over to Primus and says, "Primus what is 832000 devided by 0". Primus opens it's mouth to answer and says "The answer-r-r-r-r-r-" and a loud Duhn sound is heard and Primus's eyes glow blue. After a few seconds Primus explodes. Fighter turns to group, "See? I told you I got this".

I got great use out of Modrons in 4E, where I used them as very sinister, dangerous enemies. I really liked the 'From One comes Many' idea they had, which was basically meant any higher up Modron was a composite of the lesser ones, so as they died, they'd split into lots the lesser forms. They were all part of some huge, dangerous plan that the PCs were trying to work out. It helped that my previous group didn't know/couldn't remember/didn't recognise Modrons as I was using them. I'm a little disappointed by the jokey look they've given them in 5E. They were always a bit daft, even back in AD&D, but the current version look a bit too silly. Having them in the MM mean people recognise them now as well. Odd that you should talk about Inevitables as well - both are important in my current campaign - it asks the question what happens when two forces of Absolute Law meet. (Answer- nothing good.)

One other obvious thing you can do with Modrons is to have the party interacting with one or more Rogues. They don't go off their program often but it does happen, and you're especially likely to find them as stragglers after the March goes off. They're still very alien most of the time, and might be either friends or foes to an adventuring party. Maybe a sympathetic one helps them out of a bad spot and then later they encounter it as (say) a prisoner of an evil mage and they get to repay the favor. Or a more sinister Rogue Modron installs itself as some kind of advisor to the local nobility, maybe disguising its true nature by pretending to be the creation of a hedge wizard or somesuch. On a grander scale, maybe the party gets involved with trying to protect a Rogue from a hit squad sent from Mechanicus to eliminate the aberrant, involving them in Outer Planar affairs for the first time. And in the highest tiers, perhaps the Modrons are succumbing to a plague of chaos and the party has to either aid them, or ensure that the plague does its job and sweeps them away to be replaced by a new race to champion Utmost Order.

I'm actually dming a campaign where the modrons are the big bad, a new primus came into power and decided the rest of the planes are too chaotic, and basically go out to take control and thinks, there's no one to break the laws if I turn them all to brass.

Watching this, I seem to recall a computer video game called "Planescape: Torment." It's an old game, but for those who have never played it but still want to, there's some minor spoilers of one of the sub-plots here so if you proceed it's at your own discretion. Everything I say here is already on various websites (like I said, the game is old), so the impact of spoilage here is pretty much a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. In the Clerk's Ward of Sigil, there is the Curiosity Shoppe being run by Vrischika. In there, one of the items that can be purchased is a small articulated toy figure resembling a Modron...There's a secret to this, which involves manipulating the limbs in a certain order...Which will transport the PC Party to the Rubikon Construct on the plane of Limbo. Also known as the Modron Maze, you can find some info at torment.wikia.com/wiki/Modron_Maze. I figure that this Modron Maze sub-plot is an example of what these guys are talking about: Once you've gotten more info of the dialogue strings with the Modrons that operate the Maze, it becomes clear that the Rubikon Construct is to gather info to study "the dynamics of the dungeon-delving sub-culture, including their use of teamwork tactics & social interactions among themselves." It can been seen that this is one of the ways that Mechanus is not only trying to instill *some* level of Law within the chaotic plane of Limbo, but their mission with the cube, but they are also conducting a controlled-environment research survey on adventuring groups! This "research they conduct in the Modron Maze is a part of the Modron March these guys are talking about.

Think you guys could do an episode on Daemons/Yugoloths? They always get neglected and left out of D&D (hell, 4th edition axed them entirely), but I feel they have a lot of potential to be extremely interesting if people just knew more about the sorts of themes that can be explored with them (namely the sort of deep, eternal, transcendental Evil-with-a-capital-E that dwarfs both Devils and Demons in its power but hides in plain sight by pretending to be merely petty opportunists playing both sides).

I love Modrons but never had a chance to use them much. Wen I DM I sometimes use Devas and Solars and 'angelic' beings as my in-universe avatar for when the characters break the rules or go off rails. So if the characters broke alignment, or went off adventure a Deva would show up and warn them. If they kept it up have the Deva use its magic to mess with them. If they keep it up, have the Deva show up and announce it is leaving and they are no longer under its protection. They think 'Ha we won', until the demons start showing up. You could use Modrons in the same way. So let's say a magic use tries uses a sword; next round some Modrons gate in and try to take the magic users sword away. Let's say the adventure is to the east so the players ho off the rails and head west...smack into a squadron of 3 Modrons. And just as with Devas and Solars, if you kill a Modron the next thing up in the hierarchy shows up next time.

You can even justify the edition changes with this, as mechanus gets pi more accurate, circles can get closer to perfection, which adjusts the magic field, the swing of a fighter's sword, how long a monk's kick is and how much force it imparts when it hits, the range of an area effect spell, the amount of energy that a magic missile can contain, etc... "Wait, so you can only shoot out one magic missile a day now? Just two centuries ago you could do that every single encounter. What happened?"

I like to use lawful good outer planes creatures like Devas, and Modrons (never personally used Inevitables) for an in game DM tool for when characters deviate, metagame, use player knowledge, break class prohibitions, etc. That's not me the DM railroading or punishing, that is how the game universe works. As a DM I figure in the game that is exactly why the gods created these servants, to enforce the rules of the cosmos on mortals who choose to break them.
