Own a Smart Garage door for a FRACTION of what Chamberlain is charging (or trying to charge) ;)
Nearly everything in my home is connected and controlled through verbal commands. I love the feeling of living what was once only possible in Star Trek Next Generation episodes. My external garage door was one of the final services in my house that needed some love. I needed a smart garage door, and I needed it now!
So I did what most consumers do. I went out and bought the same brand of 'smart' controller as the manufacturer of my garage door opener, thinking it would be a simple plug-and-play solution. Off I went to install it!
After spending a fair amount of time reading the instructions and installing the various hardware components, I was ready for the final step. It was time to connect the system to my Google Mini for some voice command action. Much to my surprise (and disappointment), my Google Mini barked back at me that I “did not have a premium subscription with Chamberlain." It looks like they were trying to swindle people for one dollar per month. I get it, $1 a month is not a lot of money, but It’s the principle, dammit!
Check out all of the people complaining about the subscription on the Chamberlain forums. It seems like they may not have thought this subscription model out so well!

Thank you so much for this video! I had an issue when i plugged in the inch relay device to the actual opener, it wouldnt recognize the push button anymore. After watching your video i realized the best way is solder to the pin as shown in the video. Once i figured out how to solder... first time.. it worked like a charm. I then programmed to work inside the Alexa app for a custom command. Now “Alexa open the garage door” and “Alexa, close the garage door” works like a charm. This whole set up cost less than an chamberlain remote switch for the car. Now i just click the app while I’m on my way home! Thanks again!

I have an old Chaimberlain opener I called a repair guy to install a new door weatherstrip and adjust the torsion springs and do an inspection. Also wanted to install the safety sensors as mine doesn’t have them. He told me the old models don’t have them and no place to wire them into. He asked how old it was and told him 89’-90’. He said that about 93’ is when the sensors were required but my old one was grandfathered in until it gets replaced. I bought the same circuit board as you have to work with Alexa. I have an external keypad to enter a code and the connections are inside the garage so will try and see if it’s an easy hookup there or do it up where the motor is. Don’t have have the fancy stuff yours does so should be ezpz

I have the Garage Opener, with the My Q WIFI and I use Alexa to open and close... I dont pay any fees... You'll have to use Simple Comand App... Then you'll have to go to Alexa and create routine and it works perfectly. By the way, you could hook it directly to the two terminal with soldering...

This video was exactly what I needed. My wall console was almost like this one. Luckily my PCB had 2 holes I could stick a jumper wire in and...like magic it worked! Thanks for giving me the idea!

I bought the smart garage door opener off amazon for $49.00. It talks to my smart phone, I operate it will my google Home, I say, "Ok google open the garage" it asks me for a pin and the door opens. I do not pay any fees. I am not as easily irritated by a blinking light so it does not bother me. Mine beeps and has a small LED that points to the ceiling when the door opens. My Smart opener works from anywhere since it is on my wifi network. I always alerts me if the the door is open. I get a notification on my phone every time my door opens and closes. It is good to let my relatives in when I am not home.

Its interesting to know what you can do in the routines. I knew there was a routines option but never tried it. I used IFTTT to do the same command. Between, i had the same type of garage door which wouldn’t short so, i solder two wired to my garage door remote control button.

Yeah you can definitely do some very cool things with the routines and verbal commands right int he app... no need to go crazy with external services.

Great workaround! Very clear and I may consider it for our home which also has a detached garage. The one sticking point I have is security. If someone can simply say "open the garage door" through the window, they can get access to that nice BMW. At the very least, I'd create an unexpected phrase to issue the switch toggle. Aladdin's "who dares disturb my slumber?" comes to mind. "Open sesame" is a bit too on-the-nose. I'm pissed about the $1/month fee in perpetuity and happy to see these inventive solutions, but for us the myq app itself is secure and we have a dedicated iPad for the house mounted in our kitchen. With the keypad on the garage itself, we've found enough convenience to do without voice control.

Thanks for the feedback! Funny, I was actually thinking the same thing... Here are some thoughts: 1. The Google Mini cant really hear you clearly from outside the garage door when it is closed... I tried yelling at the front door and it was unable to clearly decipher and execute the command. 2. as a simple workaround I suppose one could change the verbal command to: "Ok Google, Open the garage door, pin number" 1,2,3" this way the command would only be executed if the verbal command included the entire phrase and pin number. What do you think?

@@ModsAndProjects that would work. More for Google assistant to possibly misunderstand, but better than a generic command some stranger can guess. Whether you speak a PIN or a custom phrase will have the same effect.

After doing some research myself on this device, supposedly the alert they put into these things to warn you that the garage door is closing is required by some federal law that says any internet controlled garage door has to include a warning signal since you can't physically see the door you are closing. I agree though that it's redundant, and the noise it makes is so loud that it's disruptive to a neighborhood that has to hear it every time you close your garage door. I will never buy a device from this company again. The whole thing is just horribly designed.

It would be simple enough to add/hack an audible alert into the same monetary switch action of the "open" command if one felt the need for such a thing, but i think we both feel its redundant. Honestly I probably would have kept the overpriced Chamberlain unit if it was not for the subscription-based dollar grab! Anyhow, Thanks for chiming in! @ModsAndProjects you can just add a cheap WiFi camera inside the garage and that will act like you being there while the door is opening/closing as you can actually monitor it from your phone and that camera can even notify when any motion is detected at its sight ;) just saying... thanks for the video btw

I did mine but it was kinda hard, only because my garage is about 20feet tall. Getting the spring loaded 24 awg wire into holes 20 feet up on an not so stable ladder.

Is there way to add open/close switch or sensor to see on app whether garage door is open or close? and can you use this via 4g/3g (cell phone) when away from home?

Open close status would need to be coded in to the app. Yes you can use this via cell phone from anywhere.
