In this video I explain how to turn a Sonoff Basic into a garage door opener and use it in eWelink. No custom firmware, but some hardware modification to the Sonoff Basic is required.
My video on checking if the same with Sonoff R2 can be done: • Small Bit: Sonoff Basi...
If you need a purpose built Sonoff garage door opener check this Eachen GD-DC5: • Eachen GD-DC5 Garage D...
Also, Sonoff 4CH Pro is a perfect option, no hardware changes needed: • Sonoff 4CH Pro - Non-m...
Do you want to turn your Sonoff Basic onto a garage door opener? Use eWeLink to accomplish just that! Just enter the eWeLink code found on the back of your Sonoff Basic, and you'll be ready to go!
With eWeLink, you can control your Sonoff Basic from anywhere in the world. You can even open your garage door from your phone! This is a great way to have more convenience and control in your life, and it's easy to do with eWeLink!

Both my openers operate just on voltage high only, they won't care how long the contacts are closed. The update is handy, but not essential if you don't mind clicking the app switch off & on again. Shelly have an alternative that'll work out of the box, but their range isn't as comprehensive as Sonoff's if you have more smart home stuff.

This video is very good for smart device DIYers. Very brilliant idea. The drawback is you are not able to tell the status of the garage door. Not able to check the status of door is just half of the whole purpose of having smart garage door. There are some very similar devices cost less than $50 that came with similar setup plus a door sensor that can provide the status of the door. Spending couple hours cutting and soldering, installation might be a good weekend project. If time is essential and status is important for you, you might just buy directly. I am not trying to deter the experiement of this amazing product. In stead ,I am trying to help you decide before trying. You are trying to install a device that give you function to open or close only. If you want to try or already installed this design, You can buy separate wifi window sensor to amend the missing function. The cost is less than $30. Thank Mr. Varga for this excellent idea, work and video. BARVO !!

Good video. Newer garage door openers use Security + 2.0 which means a simple switch contact will not activate the door. You can get around this by buying a Security + 2.0 smart button on eBay and then hack into the button contacts to hook up to the Sonoff. The Security + 2.0 Smart buttons communicate serially over a 2 wire interface to the door opener.

If you don't want to connect directly to garage opener, you can soldering the relay wires to the remote control toggle switch. The relay switch works with computer and any low voltage toggle devices. The New Sonoff boards are different. I decided it was best to remove the relay because there's a Fuse (F1) almost touching the relay (with tracing on the top that has to be cut). I used a dremil to cut all the way through the board tracing, then replaced the wire from the terminal through my cut on the board to the relay pin on the back. Thanks to Csongor for making the Video. *If you can't Hack/Mod the board just use a Relay with a 110 Volt coil and NO Contacts and you and it will work the same.

I created an Arduino controller and remote to control my garage door a few years ago. Security was accomplished by a "challenge-response" type protocol that I designed... Basically, it would send you a number and you had to respond with another number based on a mental calculation of a response number given the challenge digits... Eventually, I needed to replace my garage door opener and I discovered that the new ones had "increased security" that made it so that a relay connecting the wires for a short time would no longer work... Whereas the old garage door wall switch was just a momentary contact button similar to a standard doorbell button, the new switch had a circuit board in it and there was some sort of messaging protocol that they used... This allows them to still have a 2-wire connection, but be able to control multiple garage door openers and lights... Your system would have a similar problem with this type of garage door opener...
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga Жыл бұрын
Wow interesting, I never thought these things exists. Although if you are installing the switch inside the hour, I don't see the point of the added security. I mean you are side, you could unclip the door and roll it up. It this all about selling more stuff to you?
@seanseoltoir
@seanseoltoir Жыл бұрын
@@csongorvarga -- Assuming you mean "house" instead of "hour" and "inside" instead of "side"... The remote was for inside the car... Being an older garage door opener, it did not have the latest rolling codes security mechanism and as long as it was working, I really didn't have any incentive to replace it... Replacement remotes were probably more expensive than creating this... But I already had most of the parts from other micro-controller projects that I've done, so I really didn't need to buy much... I'm retired, so I have plenty of time on my hands to do this sort of thing IF I can just get motivated... :) The challenge and response messages were obfuscated by placing the few actual bytes of data inside a 1K buffer that was populated with random numbers for each message... This was also encrypted, albeit not with a very robust encryption method since the micro-controllers were rather limited in memory and speed... The algorithm for the response needed to be something that the user can mentally answer easily enough... It could be something as simple as repeating the challenge digits back in reverse order or doing some sort of mathematical operation on the digits... Because it is using a different frequency and communication protocol than any of the normal garage door remotes, anyone using any sort of sniffer to capture codes would likely see it or know what it was even if they did see it... If they really wanted in the garage, they could just grab a sledge hammer and go in through one of the walls, so the security only needs to be as robust as it would take to either encourage them to go to an easier target or to use a brute force means to breach the door or walls... Basically, the idea is that there is no reason to have a vault door on a room that has sheetrock walls... :) After getting the new garage door opener, I could not tie directly into the wires to the remote wired switch, so I modified the micro-controller code a bit to have it control the power for the entire garage door opener via a relay... Basically, the garage door opener is powered down when it is not in use, so even if someone was able to capture and utilize the rolling codes, it would do them no good since the unit is not powered up... This same thing could be accomplished by using the SONOFF controller and I might consider doing that at some point... I just received yesterday a SONOFF BASICR2 that I had ordered off of AliExpress and started fooling around with it... Typical slow boat from China type delivery -- a bit over 2 months... I haven't decided if it is secure enough for my needs, but for $5.30, I thought it was worth a look to see if I might could find a use for it...

I have all 4 of my shop doors equipped with these modified Sonoffs. Thanks. They work perfectly. My son sent me an $80 opener that looked suspiciously like a Sonoff Basic in a black case. I thanked him and sent it back to him (with his approval) with one of the modified Sonoffs for his garage door. He was amazed! I have Sonoff Basics and 4 channel pros all over my shops to control everything including my two 220V upright compressors. I use Google Minis and can control everything with my voice.

Wow, thanks for your response. I have a 4CH Pro now, and I will definitely want to make a new video how to use that for a door opener. It looks like many people are willing to make the hardware mod but I am sure there are more who are less comfortable making these changes. And at least they could do with 4CH Pro.

The garage door openers usually expect a short pulse. I am not sure how your unit will respond. If I leave mine on for a long time, it will stop the door after a few seconds.

Yes, otherwise you put live voltage to your garage motor which will likely destroy it.

If you have installed Sonoff to your garage and you open the door with the original garage' s RF remote control, does it seem open in the eWeLink app?

No, there is no feedback in the app, it will not show the actual state of the door.

The only issue I see with this setup is that you really don't know whether the garage door is actually opening or closing. There are no sensors to tell you the status unless you are physically viewing it. Maybe a wifi tilt sensor could be added to provide feedback.

Hello thanks for the tips … but something is missing … with sonoff is there a way to have the status of the door ? Opened or closed or semi opened… actually except to add a sensor I don’t see any other solution … what’s you’ve done on your side ? I’ve almost the same garage door :)

These devices are not designed to have any input, so the answer is no. I have reviewed ans Eachen device, which is designed to be a garage door opener which have a door sensor. That does what you need, but also cost a bit more.

Yes, 95-240V AC. But there is a product called Sonoff SV which works off 24V DC. And the best you don't need to modify it, it has the relay outputs you need.

Great video! It was very helpful to see how easy it is to update the firmware with the eWeLink app. I had two old Sonoff Basic switches that I was no longer using due to the super invasive permissions the eWeLink app requires. Rather than installing the app on my new phone, I got around this by installing eWeLink on an old phone I no longer use. I installed the app and updated the firmware and settings. I turned the phone off and put it back in the drawer. Now I control the Sonoffs with Alexa and the Alexa mobile app. It works great! Thank for a great idea! Rather than cutting the traces and solder, I decided to leave the Sonoff as it is and add a simple 110v relay ($1.55 US, free S&H).

@csongorvarga

Sonoff is the name of the products, this is what you see printed on the products. iTead is the Chinese company who manufactures the products and develops the software. eWeLink is the name of the Android and iOS app that you use to control them. But essentially Sonoff and eWeLink is the same, as eWeLink only works with Sonoff products (with a few exceptions). I hope this makes it clear.

If you use the Sonoff RF, you could exchange the very expensive remote control with really cheap Sonoff remotes. Thanks for the idea. Sadly, there is no usable wifi in my garage.
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 4 жыл бұрын
Ah that is a good tip. I have a few Sonoff models, but never owned and RF. Just remember that these cheap Sonoff remotes do not use and coding in the RF signal. They are like the very old garage door openers, where the RF code can be listened and replayed by a 3rd party. This is why the genuine garage door remotes are expensive.
@CyberlightFG
@CyberlightFG 4 жыл бұрын
Mine is 868mhz unencrypted anyways. There is nothing in the garage but the car. The remotes are still expensive. 45€ each and I would need 4. I bought no genuine ones for 8€ each. The battery won't last that long, but I'll just try it.

Hey, thanks for this video guide. Very clever and really well described. I wondered if you would be kind enough to offer me some advice. I’m trying to set up a cellar door to open/close via a voice command (with Alexa). The cellar door currently has a manual rocker switch, which is zero voltage. Positions are raise/close and the middle position which is clicks back to is stop. In order to open or close the cellar door, the switch must be held in open continuously, until the door reaches the fully open position. Same with closing, it must be held constantly until closed. I am trying to figure out which smart switch will work best to control this cellar door. I know the app has a timer, which is perfect, so once a connection is established by a smart switch, it can be kept switched for a set duration. However, the open wire is different to the close wire. Three wires in switch in total. Blue, pink and yellow. When blues touches pink, cellar door opens. When blue touches yellow, cellar door closes. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
@csongorvarga
@csongorvarga 4 жыл бұрын
I assume the motor which operates the door uses mains power. In that case I suggest a 2 gang TX wall switch. These have an interlock function, meaning one gang switches off the other gang. The only thing I have not tested, if the inching function (auto off) also works in interlock mode.
@CharlieSouthall
@CharlieSouthall 4 жыл бұрын
Csongor Varga - The motor is in fact 24volt, however it is fed from a control unit, which decelerates the motor, as it approaches fully open or closed, to avoid a hard finish. The control unit is mains power (240v) However, the switch wire, which I intend to tap into, is a zero voltage switch. So we can not push any power through the wires. They are just simple switching wires. The problem I am having is to find a smart switch device which will enable a ‘open’ option, which makes a timed (inching) contention - but also has separate terminals for ‘close’.

@Oranges743
@Oranges743 5 жыл бұрын
Since sonoff now has inching mode, you are now able to do a momentary pulse. It’s the same as doing a momentary press on your garage door button. If you do the EXACT SAME THING that he did, you need to power your sonoff with 120volts to the INPUT side. Hot wire to “L” and neutral wire to “N”. You need to make sure that you pick up the power to the sonoff from a receptacle not a switch from a light, that way you don’t cut the power to the sonoff. Doing this will power the internal components which then closes the relay on your command. The OUTPUT side of the sonoff gets connected to where your garage door push button is connected. Follow the wires from the bush button to the garage door motor, and you’ll see two terminals. That’s where they get hooked on to. Just remember to do the EXACT same thing that he did by isolating the relay input from the output and soldering the little jumper in between. If you don’t isolate it, you will have 120VOLTS to your garage door low voltage side and it will fry it. If you don’t feel confident modifying the sonoff basic, they do make another controller that already has the input side isolated from the output. Hope this helps
