Better than the commercial matten filters available. Always an inspiration for us less qualified DIYers. Thanks Fred O

Another slick design, I dig it!!!! I like when the HOB's get growth all over them.

we were gonna say the same thing...........it would be cool if they could grow all kind of plants and still run but it seems to clog em up......maybe Fishman could find a way of anyone can!

I'm assuming that this design is to convert to air power as opposed to electric water pump. If you were to build the full Marten, so it took the full span across the tank and then used dual air/water stacks, how much less efficient would it be? I think in a bigger tank you would need to create flow, but in smaller tanks maybe under 55 gallons you might be okay? I really like Marten filters with the water pump but I would try it with air. Great video!

Hey Kerry! This filter was designed so that you could clean one matten at a time. Because of the surface area I gave it more flow. The extra flow was an attempt to see if I could increase the flow over every part of the sponge and see if it was necessary. Turns out that it didn't make it more efficient. Extra flow is great for river fish though

Very nice! Do you find that much waste is released back into the tank as you lift out the cartridge? I began thinking about a Mattenfilter recently as I am tired of the time intensity and expense of maintaining cannisters and a HOB on my 50 US gallon tank (I'm not a breeder). The Hamburg filter makes sense but I was wondering about the practical mechanics of removing and cleaning the foam when required. Indeed, a small amount of research told me that this is messy. So, I thought about creating a complete temporarily-sealable cartridge which could be lifted out of the tank. It would include the lift tubes as well, unlike the beauty you've created. However, the weight of the included water may make it difficult to lift from the tank. Your design eliminates such a potential problem. If there were front and back "temporarily-sealable" plates on your cartridge, nothing would be released into the tank proper when withdrawing it for cleaning...if that's even an issue. I see a mill...a Bridgeport, perhaps? Looks like you have a lathe to turn those shoulders on the rounds, too!! Anyway, low and behold, your video turned up to tell me I might be on the right track. Thank-you!

There is always some mulm released back into the tank when taking out any dirty filter material, but very little in this case. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for responding!@@FishmanEricRussell . I'm interested in one of your kits, should you produce them. My aquarium is a 50 US, 24" deep, 16.5" wide, 26" long.

Hey Fishman, I've been watching a lot of your videos for a long time now but I have never tried to reach out to you until now. This update video gave me the motivation to do so but I don't know what is the best format to contact you for design and ideas. What I'm thinking of, I'm pretty sure it has been told/suggested to you but if not, great or that you yourself have thought about it or not. I just want to communicate with you about certain designs for testing purposes. I would do it myself if I had the tools, materials, resources, funding and time but I also know that you're doing your best to keep up with all the requests and that you're a busy man. I'm not rushing you at all but I would love to share some ideas with you and to try to put them to test for functionality and results. Please let me know a way to communicate with you and share thoughts and opinions. Always loved your creativity. Hope to hear from you soon.

use membranes , more they clog = more back pressure = membrane stretches = holes get larger and self clean
