Fluval 406 (Ebay UK / EU): ebay.to/2IkuIjA Fluval 407 (Ebay UK / EU): ebay.to/2WiwpmK Fluval 406 (Amazon): geni.us/gxlybuw Fluval 407 (Amazon): geni.us/A7aDO Foams and Biohome Ultimate: www.filterpro.co.uk (FilterPro site has links to suppliers in other countries) Biohome Ultimate on Amazon UK: geni.us/GDV8oLd Biogravel on Amazon UK: geni.us/o98PP Another great filter from Fluval which is suitable for a normally stocked tank of around 300 litres (for a FULL cycle). It is relatively cheap for a quality canister filter and will be on offer (while stocks last) from many different suppliers now that the 407 is available - check links above. Fluval make very good filters and this one has the bonus of having lots of mechanical filtration (foams) so cleaning schedule can be extended beyond what would normally be necessary for similar sized canister filters of a standard design. The set up of this filter will also apply to the new Fluval 407 and the same method applies to all the filters in the range (with varying amounts of media required). WHAT IS A FULL CYCLE? *If someone tells you the aquarium nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrate that is incorrect - please read on* A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere. Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios: (1 US gallon = 3.8 litres) (1kg = 2.2 lbs) Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat. Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'. This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on: sales@filterpro.co.uk 07772848730 (Richard) Anyone who sends a filter (UK only at present) will have it upgraded and returned to them for free and the only cost you will pay is how much it costs to ship it to me - I'm helping to boost your filter and the resulting videos will hopefully be useful to viewers all over the world so it's a win/win. I have been running a 406 for a couple of years now, theres one big mod I have done to massively improve it! The best thing since sliced bread is that all pond solutions booster pre filter, thats what ive got hooked up to my 406 which has allowed me to remove the sponge tray completely from the 406, and fill it with media so not only are all 4 trays filled with bio home, the void where the sponge tray goes is also full of media too, because the pre filter does all the mechanical!

Good one - yes, to a thinking mind the feel of the media speaks volumes. As long as you're using enough media for the volume of tank and stock you can expect great results. Obviously, as long as you avoid using a conditioner which won't mess with the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate (e.g. seachem prime) you will allow the bacteria to reach a natural population maximum so it's all good. Best of luck with the tank.

I have watched many of your videos and noticed that the bacteria gel balls are not being included in the canister filters when you are pimping them. Is this not recommend any longer? Rock on Pondguru. Thank you very much. Will proceed to modify my canister filters. I bought a used Fluval 406 to set up while I clean the main canister in my 400l tank. Anyone think it is a good idea to bury a bunch of plastic bioballs or ceramic noodles under my sand in the aquarium? Your colleagues debate the yes and no. I think I am going to try it so that I can give my 400l aquarium to cycle as the guru describes. Wow, the 406 flow rate is powerful. Another proof that my main canister must be cleaned after 2 years, for the flow rate is low. Anyway, there is a leak around the the main seal near the clip. Gonna trouble shoot now. Be back in a few.
@ThousandYardStare
@ThousandYardStare 5 ай бұрын
(my other channel) With regard to burying anything under the sand it is best to go with something which will form cavities which will enable the buried media to 'breathe'. If the buried media doesn't get a decent amount of water flow then everything will quickly turn anaerobic and if there isn't enough pores / cavities to breathe the pollutants (sulfurous compounds) back out you could end up acidifying the tank. It is best to use gravel of some type and lots of people have used the Biogravel for that purpose as it allows for cavities between the pieces and has the added bonus of being perfectly porous to support a nation of beneficial bacteria. Plastic is no good as a filter media since the bacteria needs to build up a 'slime' coating on the plastic to enable it to stick to the surfaces - if all that organic matter is buried it will definitely cause problems, hence the recommendation for something which is a natural surface for bacteria to colonize. Hope that makes sense.

It will take a very very very long time for the Biohome media to get to point it needs to be replaced!! But to clean it, have some tank water ready (5 gal bucket) unplug the filter, close the intake/outake, remove the lid, take the baskets out and rinse the media in that tank water in the 5 gal bucket. Then do a quick rinse of your sponges (can use that 5 gal bucket for sponges as well), rinse out your canister, put everything back together and you're all set. It's pretty simple once you've done it a couple of times.

I have a question: Is it normal that my 407's top cover (the uppermost part that contains the engine) when clamped, doesnt attach strongly to the bucket part, but instead leaves a little bit of wobble room (maybe a 2mm or so) between the bucket and the top. The gasket is new and I use silicone grease on it. I know you mention this issue, but maybe there is some fix anyways.

On all of these pimp my filter videos you say that the flow rate as claimed by the manufacturer is reduced by the inclusion of filter media, pipework etc. It would be interesting to see just how accurate their figures are. The fact that a filter will pump X number of litres per hour without any media is utterly pointless, we need to know what the figures are when it is in a proper working environment. If I need a filter that will shift 400 litres an hour there is no point in buying one that makes that claim but in real life only pumps 200.

Can you do a video on how to transition an established tank to bio home media?
@ThousandYardStare
@ThousandYardStare Жыл бұрын
When doing any major work on filters the key is to do it gradually. For example if a filter has 4 trays do one tray of new media every 1-2 weeks until the whole filter is upgraded. For most canister filters the time to upgrade it fully when operating on a fully stocked mature tank would be 6-8 weeks if it was the only filter on the tank. However, some people upgrade the whole thing and although I've never heard of problems when doing that with the Biohome it's not something I would ever recommend - they probably get away with it due to how quickly the media matures and the gel balls which come with the media release a nation of bacteria to flatten out any resulting ammonia spikes.

I turned off my canister filter thinking maybe its cycling too fast, and my ammonia levels basically completely went away but nitrate still high. What could be wrong with the canister?

The foam isn't specific to me and you should be able to get it online. Ordering from Amazon is probably as close as you will get - search for pond foams and they should come up.

(10.45min) On Fluval website model 406 has 245 US Gal/h (930 L/h) model 407 has (383 US Gal/h) 1450 L/h . But when you look on other websites you will find exactly what you say that 406 gives 1450L/h? So where is the true. I'm setting new 200l tank and think that 407 might be to power full ???
@pondguru
@pondguru Жыл бұрын
I am assuming that they won't have increased / decreased the pump output from the 406 to the 407, chances are that it's exactly the same pump. Either way the 406 / 407 won't be too much or a 200 litre tank, especially if you use a spray bar to diffuse the flow.

I've got an old fluval 204 that still works (sort of) the 'cartridge' is broken and I seem to get a lot of bypass. I've just taken it off a tank because it seemed like more muck was getting trapped by the biological media than the mechanical sponges! any ideas for making it work without the cartridge?

Will it fit a 16/22 mm hose?
@pondguru
@pondguru 2 ай бұрын
According to the Fluval website the supplied hose is 14.5mm internal diameter so if you have standard 16mm flexible aquarium hose it will nip down onto the Fluval fitting with a jubilee clip. www.cmcaquatics.co.uk/fluval-407-external-aquarium-canister-filter

oskarelmee yeah .. I have the 206. I find the sponge twice as big as needed. They need to change the design to cut sponge in half and have 50% more biological. And that black fluval sponge isn’t any biological. Really annoying that taking up an whole basket

Hi mate just a quick question I have a fx6 but I don’t like the nozzles on the outlet witch doesn’t seem to me it doesn’t have a direct flow back in the tank it’s like spitting it back out everywhere wondering if I get the fx4 nozzle for the direct positioning of flow of water for my fx6 would it put strain on the repeller it’s self?

The design of the 406 isnt ideal, the sponge (longitudely place) will get gunk on one side and wont be efficient throughout the length of the sponge. I prefer the eheim classic where the flow is distributed evenly thoughout the sponge.
