@Red-gy9gx5 жыл бұрын
Here is the translation from Russian into English 1) concrete must be vibrated after pouring. So bubbles come out of it and the mixture is compacted. Heavier dyes are also more suitable for the front side of the countertop. 2) instead of insulation, put any wooden sheet. So the tabletop can be screwed to the base. 3) after removing the form, you need to grind the countertop on the front side. This will reveal the beauty of the filler and the table will have a finished look. 4) after firing the base, it must be ground. Because burnt pieces of wood stick very poorly to it. But the table was not bad and the work was done incredible !!! Thank you for the video!

I've made forms, same materials. I made windowsills, curved front, and for the form exterior the fronts were made from plastic moldings, from the trim dept at Lowe's. Used Dap putty to seal seams. Used the fiberglass strands. Used various dies, and did the swirls. Another idea is to add multi color fish tank gravel. To get a gloss finish, used graduated steps, using a grinder with wheel that uses velcro to attach the various pads. An idea for polishing would mount the grinder in an apparatus based on the principle of a surface grinder in a machine shop, to maintain a perfectly flat surface. I might just make one, once I've finished building my house.

Great presentation and result - I like it! Have you ever worked with AirCrete? After seeing the difficulty you had with the foam board, I'm thinking that a thin base of concrete poured for the top (as in the video), followed by a thicker slab of AirCrete would do the trick nicely and give you the weight savings you're looking for.
@modustrial7 жыл бұрын
I hadn't heard of Aircrete, but it looks interesting. It seems like the tools needed to make it are fairly specialized though, but it is intriguing none-the-less. Another solution (which is probably what I should have done is to build a 2x4 bridge over the form that you attach midway through the pour....sorta what I did in panic, except that with the bridge you would have support pieces outside the form instead of drilling into the sides of the form itself (this risks blowing out the melamine, but I got lucky and that didn't happen). My video for the GFRC coat rack shows the bridge technique applied to embed a french cleat in a GFRC tile, if interested.
@tswrench7 жыл бұрын
There are ways of doing AirCrete on the cheap. After all, it's only cement mixed in the correct proportion with frothed soap bubbles or a foaming agent. It's super strong, lightweight (it floats) and seems like a perfect solution for cement/concrete furniture projects if weight reduction without sacrificing strength is an imperative. I like that GFRC coat rack project; very creative. With so many angles and geometric shapes in play on the racks, I'm wondering if gluing larger diameter marbles to the pipe ends would enhance it by lending some round/spherical accenting. Also, it would seemingly prevent any damage caused by the pipe ends to coats or fabrics. Sorry, I don't mean to armchair quarterback your designs. Your creativity is contagious. SUBSCRIBED!
@modustrial7 жыл бұрын
The marbles idea is cool! I don't think its armchair quarterbacking....it is just being creative. I am the same way. The minute I see something I like, I'm immediately asking myself how I could make it even better. It is actually a compliment...the more something inspires me, the more ideas I have to build from it. I'll have to look into the Aircrete. I think you'd have to do some tests to figure out how it bonds with GFRC, but there is definitely some room for exploration with it.

We built a CMU house in 2003 with a masonry (brick) veneer, so there was a masonry crew onsite for over two months. My wife made four concrete countertops for the baths and kitchen, which worked out fine, but were simply the same process as above but with concrete and some latex paint. If you have a decent grinder and can grind things flat, just grinding/polishing concrete up to at least 1200 grit is a nice, durable, slick finish. You can go to 2000 or more.

I saw a video where a small batch of the concrete had fabric dye added to it and swirled with the main plain concrete. Dark blue was used and it looked good although it was a much smaller object.
