As someone who has worked a lot with concrete and plaster, I kept thinking "Wow, he is really overworking that concrete if he wants to get a marbleized look"! Well I gotta tell you... your finished product is GORGEOUS! It came out really beautiful with a very organic look! The base is beautiful as well... Love it!

Here is the translation from Russian into English 1) concrete must be vibrated after pouring. So bubbles come out of it and the mixture is compacted. Heavier dyes are also more suitable for the front side of the countertop. 2) instead of insulation, put any wooden sheet. So the tabletop can be screwed to the base. 3) after removing the form, you need to grind the countertop on the front side. This will reveal the beauty of the filler and the table will have a finished look. 4) after firing the base, it must be ground. Because burnt pieces of wood stick very poorly to it. But the table was not bad and the work was done incredible !!! Thank you for the video!

I've made forms, same materials. I made windowsills, curved front, and for the form exterior the fronts were made from plastic moldings, from the trim dept at Lowe's. Used Dap putty to seal seams. Used the fiberglass strands. Used various dies, and did the swirls. Another idea is to add multi color fish tank gravel. To get a gloss finish, used graduated steps, using a grinder with wheel that uses velcro to attach the various pads. An idea for polishing would mount the grinder in an apparatus based on the principle of a surface grinder in a machine shop, to maintain a perfectly flat surface. I might just make one, once I've finished building my house.

Hey my man, this is an awesome vid! I've been toying with the idea of doing concrete counter tops for my house remodel, and this is by far the coolest style I've seen out there. I've watched a fair amount of different videos for concrete counter tops to get an idea for the different kind of looks I can go for and this is the only one I've seen with the "marble cloud" look. I dig it. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work!

I think it looks great. Instead of marble-look you got a cloud-ink-look, which is just as lovely. I would love to see the cloud-ink style as an outdoor garden coffee table in terracotta and cream or terracotta and beige. The alligator skin base was so sophisticated! Like seriously that’s some vogue magazine style!

Great presentation and result - I like it! Have you ever worked with AirCrete? After seeing the difficulty you had with the foam board, I'm thinking that a thin base of concrete poured for the top (as in the video), followed by a thicker slab of AirCrete would do the trick nicely and give you the weight savings you're looking for.
@modustrial
@modustrial 7 жыл бұрын
I hadn't heard of Aircrete, but it looks interesting. It seems like the tools needed to make it are fairly specialized though, but it is intriguing none-the-less. Another solution (which is probably what I should have done is to build a 2x4 bridge over the form that you attach midway through the pour....sorta what I did in panic, except that with the bridge you would have support pieces outside the form instead of drilling into the sides of the form itself (this risks blowing out the melamine, but I got lucky and that didn't happen). My video for the GFRC coat rack shows the bridge technique applied to embed a french cleat in a GFRC tile, if interested.
@tswrench
@tswrench 7 жыл бұрын
There are ways of doing AirCrete on the cheap. After all, it's only cement mixed in the correct proportion with frothed soap bubbles or a foaming agent. It's super strong, lightweight (it floats) and seems like a perfect solution for cement/concrete furniture projects if weight reduction without sacrificing strength is an imperative. I like that GFRC coat rack project; very creative. With so many angles and geometric shapes in play on the racks, I'm wondering if gluing larger diameter marbles to the pipe ends would enhance it by lending some round/spherical accenting. Also, it would seemingly prevent any damage caused by the pipe ends to coats or fabrics. Sorry, I don't mean to armchair quarterback your designs. Your creativity is contagious. SUBSCRIBED!
@modustrial
@modustrial 7 жыл бұрын
The marbles idea is cool! I don't think its armchair quarterbacking....it is just being creative. I am the same way. The minute I see something I like, I'm immediately asking myself how I could make it even better. It is actually a compliment...the more something inspires me, the more ideas I have to build from it. I'll have to look into the Aircrete. I think you'd have to do some tests to figure out how it bonds with GFRC, but there is definitely some room for exploration with it.

We built a CMU house in 2003 with a masonry (brick) veneer, so there was a masonry crew onsite for over two months. My wife made four concrete countertops for the baths and kitchen, which worked out fine, but were simply the same process as above but with concrete and some latex paint. If you have a decent grinder and can grind things flat, just grinding/polishing concrete up to at least 1200 grit is a nice, durable, slick finish. You can go to 2000 or more.

@wickedgrafix...do you by chance have a photo of your marbled looking top? I'm in the process of making a kitchen island/cart and patio/deck table. Thanks in advance

@@fernandobatas3482 I can get a picture but its not going to be that great. Unfortunately my top is under 2 feet of snow and ice but I'll cleared off what I can. This one is around my fire pit.

Good day sir, pretty sweet looking project. Would you not have achieved the same recess effect of the foam, by screwing down the same thickness melamine to the main form?
@modustrial
@modustrial 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can do that, but it is actually better to do the thickness of form plus thickness of a spacer. You can see me use this approach in my coat rack and waterfall live edge table videos.

Ya turned out very nice. I just made my 4x8 concrete island top. Poured it upside down onto puck board. To shiny, but little worried about sanding it down a little to make the sheen go away. Like it’s almost like a mirror. Wonder if it will show swirling marks if i sand it ??

Beautiful, I really want to get into making concrete tops myself and love learning new things. Just had my 24x50 shop built and maybe one day can start making content myself since I have been making custom furniture now for over three years. I incorporate metal and wood but I want to add some concrete creations myself.

Beautiful result pal, nice job. You can get a nice marble effect using wall plaster instead of concrete and varnishing it before it fully sets.

Loved your explanation, you can use coconut coir as a filler. it gives strength and is indeed very light weight too. Don't waste that styrofoam 😊 The marble effect is good specially when you can't see it and still manage to get it clean. The coconut coir is also suitable for formwork with gypsum if you wish to build any. coir is also used for waste dyes. your work is really nice and inspired me to work on furniture with GFRC too. cheers!

@@modustrial i'm using it and it works very fine. the only reason of not using it is that you don't have to look for cheaper options. Living in India makes you innovative in so many ways. 😂 it costs $30 or less for 100 kg and it's a lot.
@modustrial
@modustrial 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting...I'm looking and it is a bit more expensive than foam per square foot over here in the US. Do you use the expanding type of coir or something else?
@digsadsr
@digsadsr 6 жыл бұрын
@@modustrial it's the expanding type but why would somebody sell it for square foot? The one which you are looking at seems to be the one which is used for seats. you need coir fiber as you can use it the way you want. www.diton.com maybe this helps 😊

I saw a video where a small batch of the concrete had fabric dye added to it and swirled with the main plain concrete. Dark blue was used and it looked good although it was a much smaller object.
