I've pursued this swing for nearly thirty years and after watching this video, feel like I've finally "got it"! The trail leg and hip was the final piece to my puzzle. Following the "brake" concept, I was over-rotating by excessive movement in the lead knee. What I saw in this video is how the rotation brakes when letting the pelvis drive instead of the shoulders. Thanks Todd!!

Great Video Todd… I have found with my swing that I have to have a little knee flex..straight legs at set up leads to serious issues…plus a little flex leads to a more comfortable set up and for me much easier to keep resistance to the inside of my right leg and thigh on the backswing…no sway

8:30 this is it, it’s the feel and confidence it gives, it’s the move as u explain (holding the side bend on backswing) very subtle and a lot of feel in the motion, it’s clicked for me and I know before I’ve struck the ball it’s a good shot but maybe 9 times out of 10 I’ll daydream and loose the feeling and hit a poor shot but for an average man (non dedicated player) it’s very nice to emulate the greats for the odd shot and hit a beauty, makes me enjoy hitting balls rather than trying to be robotic like todays pro golfers and hitting crap shots every other ball

It boils down to side bend, and sliding off the ball in the backswing doesn't allow the player to get into side bend before the transition. Hogan didn't set up on the single plane so he creates side bend in the backswing. Moe gets into his side bend at setup and that places the clubhead several inches behind the ball. This is so he can rotate back and then slide towards the target the amount of distance the clubhead was behind the ball - maintaining that side bend and firing his hands through the ball from the inside.

Thanks for the excellent clip. The major difference between Moe and Todd is a mechanism producing main power. Moe's power spring is hip rotation moving his parts in their time orders resulting in soft swing which can not be explained in the word 'timing.' Your power well is waist rotation focusing strong impact moment. This difference ends in after-impact-posture that Moe is slanted forward to reduce the final speed and Todd is relatively vertical to stop the swing. If you intended to explain Moe's swing on easy way from the view of conventional swing, you are wonderful instructor.

Todd, love this subject... it's precisely what I am working on right now. How much "push" - if any - are you feeling from your trail leg as you move from the top of the backswing into position three and ultimately into impact?

@Rrrossa2 жыл бұрын
There's no mention of the lead leg, that's what I consider to be Moe's lower body secret. Keeping that trail leg bent, without flaring out the kneecap is just another way for him to eliminate moving parts, and very important for solid feeling strikes. I like how you mention the bracing feeling. Moe's talks about rolling the feet, and the bracing feeling. I only feel pressure on the very inside strip of my trail foot, but by that time, I've rolled most of my weight to the lead side. I haven't gotten to the point where he says he feels like the outside of the lead foot takes the "hit". Keeping my trail foot down but rolled forward parallel to the target is pretty much to prevent my trail foot from slipping out of place and/or over-rotating my hips (less moving parts). I feel like I could lift my trail foot at impact and step through towards the target sometimes, Moe was all about keeping everything straight. *There's a video where he shows his "hip bump," kind of like a hip sway or shift and he almost falls over when he exaggerates that feeling and loads his weight all the way to the left, then a pulling feeling of the arms and that's what starts the downswing for me now too, that's what allows me to lag the club naturally (always square though), meaning my wrists are loose and the weight of the clubhead releases on its own due to rotational forces.

Todd, I absolutely love your videos and I what them repeatedly. I’ve also purchased your book and have been working on this swing for the last 18 months. A question that I have is, are you trying to keep the right/trail leg from rotating while you turn your pelvis in the backswing? Is that how you are able to brace into the inside of the leg? Thanks for all that you do and bring Moe Norman to a huge audience. Godspeed.

yes, absolutely. the "inside muscles", and all that. and, really the inside muscles should be activated as a player lowers themselves into position, after raising their position to look up at the target, at address. But, for me, there is one thing missing from this method: the right clavicle should turn thru towards the target in the hitting area
@ToddGravesGolf Жыл бұрын
Right Clavicle does turn. Torso is open to 30 degrees at impact, Post impact 65 degrees and 89 degrees at finish.
@DASH1ful Жыл бұрын
@@ToddGravesGolf well, an open torso, at impact, does not necessarily mean that the clavicle has turned thru. it may have been pulled thru; but, it diesn't mean that has turned thru. in the full swing the clavicle can only turn thru when the left side of the forearm has loaded into the clavicle; the forearm can't load into the clavicle if the elbow is in control in the start of the downswing

Moe Norman talks of body tilt as does Graves. I figure the tilt promotes more weight on the trail side. From this position it's impossible to swing the club without shifting the weight to lead side which we all know is essential to distance and tempo. I tried to keep weight on trail side and found it impossible.

I saw it in your website store as part of a training kit bundle. When I clicked on it there was a “dead end”. Do you have it available for purchase individually? Have you found that it helps a lot with this aspect of the swing?
@lamprou2 жыл бұрын
Ive been at it all year, trying to move to a single plane swing. By far the hardest part im having is starting with side bend and getting to the right backswing position. Leaning/tilting away from the target at address and then finding the backswing position that maintains that angle pretty much always leaves me trying to save the shot. Even when the ball is in the middle of my stance, it feels like im so far behind the ball, there is no way to get back to the ball, let alone on a descending path. Right now I would say 3 of 5 shots are fat, 1 in 5 are topped and about 1 in 5 are "okay" hits. However, these days if the ball is 4+ inches above my feet on a slope, I can knock it a mile. But the opposite is true; if its below my feet now, its pretty much an automatic lay up.

The swing is easier. Great for aging golfers and those who aren’t Tour Players. If fairways were narrow and ball striking a premium it would definitely be better for the PGA Tour players But as statistics show, accuracy is not a premium for wining on the PGA Tour. All you need to do is bomb it, gouge it with a wedge and make a few putts. If you look at the long drive guys, many of them start with a higher shaft plane at address so Length with a Single Plane swing it’s not the issue. What i have found is that ballstriking as you get older becomes more of a premium. This is a great swing for aging golfers because it easier on the body. As far as many using the swing. I have seen 1.2M golfers come though my teachings. Not all of them are still doing it there are quite a few.

On a separate, but related topic, standing with your eye right over the ball while putting long putts is wrong. Due to an optical phenomena, known as perspective warping, straight lines apprea curved (or warped) when viewed over a distance. (E.g., the ancient Greek temple, the Parthenon, doesn't have a single straight line, but appears straight from far away due to their builders designing it to allow for the effect.) Instead, stand with your eyes a few inches inside the ball when putting to better see the line.

Common sense is anything but common ... Look to the most efficient, easiest way to hit a ball solidly and you will find a picture of Moe Norman (or even Todd aka "Little Moe"). ;) I switched to this swing for my back and now can play all day without pain and have maintained my 7 handicap at 68 years of age. I took the GGA lessons for a year and that made all the difference. The coaching and instruction were outstanding. Money well spent. Even this week, following through KZbin, I "unlocked" a distance hint that added almost 20 yds to my drives taking me past 250 yds. :) @Todd, can you address Moe's hand speed as it related to his swing and timing? Were his hands and arms faster at transition (club going back, body turning forward) as he generated his club head speed? Thanks for saving my retirement golf! :)
