I'm just a few years younger than Moffat and RTD. I'd like to point out that the word "liberal" means very different things to different people these days, depending upon political views and age group. The far right, regardless of age group, seems to hear "liberal" and think "communists who eat babies" or some such. For more normal people Gen-X and older, it means roughly "progressive", unless they've spent a lot of time listening to younger people (as I have and apparently Moffat has). For Millennials and younger people, it means, as you said, someone who supports the status quo. For that reason, I tend to avoid using the word at all and feel like I spend a lot of time trying to translate between the different generational languages in a vain effort to avoid misunderstandings.

Moffatt also said he’d never return before so anything he says is as unbelievable as RTD saying a number of years ago he wouldn’t return when he said something like it’s like going back to an old job and would never do it. I think RTD whilst an ambassador for the programme which I used to loved, I have found that what he says in interviews has little bearing on what he brings to the screen. He says the same big statements talking up the show whilst series one did very little to deliver on anything he said in interviews. Two words - space babies 😳 (of rather two words repeated as nauseoum in that episode). Me and my partner we tried to watch from the DT specials through to end of series one this week in readiness for the Xmas special which we’ve done ever since it came back. But this time we watched two of the three specials (hated the middle special with the two hander as was bored to death by it so skipped it and went to the giggle. Ruby Road was passable and then skipped space babies and went to the next episode then as I type can’t even remember what that’s called and gave up. In the 45 years since I first started watching the programme I have never been so unable to continue rewatching a season as this last one. So if it’s more of the same for season 2 I really don’t think Disney will continue their deal as if a hardened and liberal gay viewer was bored to death and turned off by the previous season (and sick of seeing Nwcuti becoming Doctor Boo-Hoo every bloody episode) then the casual viewer I feel sure would even more so switch off. So show runners can say what they like and big up the show that they love and still have a vested interest in since they still work on it but those that don’t make a living from it will give a different perspective. Whether it’s woke or not isn’t the point. It needs to be exciting with good stories and characters and sadly a short season with wokery at the forefront of RTDs mind and lame season finales and a character called Susan twist and a song of the same name was just - give me strength, Tharries - being by back Chris chibnall. And no one thought anyone would ever say that ever 😂

The Doctor has always been woke. At least since the 3rd Doctor. And bring woke is a good thing. I know some people use it as a bad word but it's not. And to say that the doctor isn't woke is to be blinded to most of the show even classic Doctor who. Doctor who is definitely woke and has been for a very long time. And more people and more shows need to be woke. Look it up. Woke is a good thing. And it's one of the reasons I love Doctor who so much. To say Doctor who is not woke is erasing at least 50+ years of the show. I know someone is going to point out that the show was not been made between 1989+2005 but in a way it never stopped. There were the graphic novels and comic books and VHS tapes with new stories and even the audio dramas. It never stopped. Doctor who is great and I love it. Just the way it is and always has been.
@professorakiba4346 күн бұрын
Thing is Doctor Who the series is classic liberal since it came out of a very liberal period, the 1960s. Also your point that the Doctor is anti-status quo also fits time he came out of because in the 1960s the establishment was Conservative and the anti-status quo was the liberal ideas that came with counter-culture of the day.

Doctor who has been the establishment for a while, now it truly is the anti status quo because trump won and people are rejecting the forced message of the intolerant left

The Doctor, in the 1960's, was simply a clever man with a moral compass who put others first. He wasn't anti-status quo, and he certainly wasn't some counter cultural icon. I would never have put John Pertwee in the same category as Peter Fonda from Easy Rider! Although I know Pertwee did love his motorbikes.

Many of the great Doctor Who stories discuss and explore these very ideas. There's ambiguity in here to be investigated. This is when Doctor Who is at its best (for me). I love when it explores big ideas. The over-simplification of the morality of Chris Chibnall's era left me cold and unengaged. Guns are bad (full stop). No discussion of the possibility of killing Hitler. Simultaneously, killing Spiders by slow suffocation, was contrasted as somehow Kind... (because it doesn't involve a gun?) I must confess there were few episodes from that tenure I felt the least interest in rewatching. Keep your damned certainty. I want ambiguity and discussion. 'Woke' is a meanless term, deprived utterly of context it signals how divided our society has become, to meaninglessly bandy about terms that hold opposing meanings to different people. Any significance ripped away in the destruction of language, the core function of language.... But, even that comes with caveats! The meaning of words do shift over time, morals shift... Perhaps advancing in some (hopefully) most/many fashions. I think that's the ideal that drives the writing of Doctor Who.
@MrRjhyt6 күн бұрын
Not trying to be contrarian, but I suspect there is a place for Steven Moffat in a post RTD2 era. It is the plurality of voices that give good writing it's strength. I happily accept he shouldn't come back as show runner. But, I'd still like to hear his voice in some manner going forward. I suspect his position and take on the character differs from Russell's in certain aspects. I want to hear/see that reflected in the writing.

The left would say that being woke simply means being kind and progressive. The right would say being woke means doing something that makes you personally feel good and righteous. Something no one asked for, that doesn't actually practically benefit the people it is being aimed at, and alienates other people who think they are being lectured. Regarding Doctor Who. I think the issue is that the social messaging has become so important to the writers that the central sci-fi adventure element has been sidelined. It has become simply a vehicle to push the beliefs of the people who make the show. Maybe people in the bars and cafe's up and down the country are not talking about it, but they will vote with their remotes. I tended to shrug off what we used to call PC stuff during the Moffat era, but when the canon was trashed and it become a fantasy show, with musical numbers and blatant, not even traditionally subtle lecturing, I just concluded it wasn't Doctor Who anymore and now tend to watch the old episodes instead. It is what it is now, and if people don't like it, don't watch it. There is plenty of brilliant sci-fi around, and of course there is the classic series and the peak of the reboot around the 50th to watch.
@Theoneandonlydramaqueen.6 күн бұрын

I agree with Moffat, he was the show runner for 7 series which is a lot so he shouldn’t ever return full time because there’s lots of new blood who could and should write episodes, or compose the music for the show etc I love RTD but “bringing the band back together” with hardly anyone new on the team was what caused season one to not be as strong as it could have been.
@SimonPayne-je3hi6 күн бұрын
I think Moffat is the better writer and RTD the better show runner. If Moffat agrees to work alongside in to there respective talents an interim, gradually reducing role is a good idea whilst others come up over two or three years. I think there has been a prepondrence of political messaging recently rather than occasionally in episodes with a strong message of peace. Also sometimes more dark episodes where some are left to die. Mostly though I enjoy just a good storyline.

What it used to mean. Language is always evolving so the meaning of certain words change with time and the way the population uses them. Those clinging onto the old meaning of woke, when it's already evolved and changed meaning in the worldwide English speaking population, are fighting a battle that is really lost, they just haven't realised it yet. I understand their frustration, but the meaning of words change all the time in living languages (as opposed to dead languages like Latin).

Depending on the definition. Sometimes people use woke for example as “this white man is innocent of the crime he’s being charged for, but there are black people who don’t get the same treatment if they were in his shoes, therefore this innocent white man should be put in jail for a crime he didn’t commit.” In this case the white person is in the majority. And by being “woke” we are unfairly trying to play God and take innocent people down or prop up guilty people simply to even out the system. I don’t like the term anymore because it can mean so many different things to different people.
@battlep0t6 күн бұрын
In that sense the Doctor is "woke" But of course Conservatives did their tired old tradition of taking liberal words and distorting them to have negative connotation and they just apply it to diversity casting now. Which is not what the word means.

Personally, I'm an old fart of a fan. Being there for the original run Tom Baker forward as a kid. I don't want to see too many deep dives into the one-off characters. Certainly not as an over-arcing series villain, when the whole season was on new. I don't want to imagine the series villian will be a rehashed version of the Black/White Guardian. Doctor Who needs to keep gonig forward to stay relevant, and not over-indulge in its past. A light touching reference, fine! But, if Mrs. Flood is an Ascended Macra, I'll despair. We've had their regression in Gridlock, are we due its opposite?

Absolutely true. I’ve been accused of being all sorts of things just for expressing a carefully thought out criticism. I’m a white, middle aged man. In the KZbin comments section I was accused of being a white, male supremacist who’s afraid of strong black women - just because I said that the exposition in the Rosa Parks episode was clumsily and clunkily written. On the other hand, I got sick of people having ago at two mixed-race child actors because someone had the nerve to cast them as John and Susan in the most recent remake of Worzel Gummidge. Some very nasty stuff was being said, so I commented that we need to remember that we’re talking about children here. I was accused of being a race traitor! So am I a white male supremacist with racist tendencies, or am I a white race traitor? Personally I don’t think I’m either. I sure as hell can’t be both! But, as you say, you can’t say anything without being accused of being some sort of ‘it’s’ or ‘phobe’ by some jackass who doesn’t have the wit to actually read and understand what you’re saying, and is just intent on shoving people into convenient pigeon holes (whether those pigeon holes are justified or not). It’s an absolute lack of common sense and critical thinking, plus the current trend for spreading hate where none was digitally expressed.

I lost interest when Bill Potts joined. Didnt care for her as a character. Felt like she was trying to be Black Clara, making jokes about the TARDIS looking like a kitchen and so on. I WAS going to watch it when Jodie took over but when she came out saying it wasnt for men, i didnt bother. Cant stand politics. Returned when Tennant came back and lasted maybe 10 minutes until the whole pronoun stuff with Rose and Meep so popped a DVD of Chris and watched his first 2 episodes instead. Never bothered with Nchuti Gatwa. Again, him and RTD doing the whole politics on the papers was a put off. Didnt care that the Doctor was now gay, we've had gay characters. Jack was omnisexual, as he said on The Weakest Link "Jack's a modern day sorta guy, anything with a zip code Anne." We had the lesbian dinosaur and her wife in Victorian England. and sadly, the fanbase has become so toxic that its either "this is woke" or "you must like it or you're far right buzz word, buzz word, buzz word" I hate having to bring my own sexuality into it, but i have to because of people like that. I am bisexual and i am sick to death of being pandered to. I dont need every main stream media project and character gay'd up to make me feel included. We have plenty of gay characters already across al media. As far back as the 80's. Shall we go music? Freddie mercury, Will Young, that livin' la vida guy. Shall we go comics? Iceman, heck the whole XMEN comics are about the LGBT stuff. Magneto being the extreme left side (everything must be like us and destroy what isnt us) and Charles being the moderate left like me (lets just co exist and be at peace). EVen tv shows and films have plenty of gay and trans representation. Ellen Page in Umbrella Academy S1, when she became Elliot, instead of recasting, they gender bent the character. We have Jack Harkness, we had plenty of gay and trans stuff on Torchwood, gay kisses with Jack on Chris's Doctor, a gay kiss with a WW2 soldier, and many many many more. Shall we talk about gay rights? I got more rights than any straight guy at work. All i gotta do is say someone made a homophobic comment and they're gone. Hell, i only got hired because i ticked the right boxes. And they told me that at the pride month i worked. They handed me pride breaches, a pride tie, pride gloves, a pride tie, a pride top hat. Flat out told me "why do you think we hired you for? Your our token gay." People literally avoid coming near me or triple checking what they say in the staff room in case they say the wrong thing around me. I even get asked if they're allowed to refer to me by my gender, or by name. Just this week i had one ask if its offensive to shorten my name because "i donna wanna mis gender or misname you and get fired." Its getting to the stage where, if this shit keeps up, its going to revert back to the 80's mindset of gay bashing again. Can both sides stop with this "its woke" and "you're far right if you dont like this show" with everything please?
