Ian, thank you for this outstanding and thoughtful review and shoot-out. Last week I got a Studiodeck for my office system to use while I restore the Linn LP12/Ekos/Troika that I bought for myself as a college graduation present in 1979 and have been using in some system somewhere ever since. It's funny, I figured I'd sell the MoFi when I was done fixing the Linn. After using it for a week, there's no chance of that! If what to do with an extra turntable is the biggest problem we ever have, we are indeed fortunate. Thanks again and best regards from Pennsylvania, US.

How does that combination sound? MP-110h and the Mofi Studiodeck? I was using the MP-110h on the Audio-Technica LP120XUSB...and decided to upgrade the Cartridge to even better one but someone told me that I would better upgrade the whole turntable....so I so one Mofi studiodeck foundation ( display/return item) at a significant discount ... and considering getting it. So how does it sound?

One of the best video comparison I've ever seen in my life on KZbin! You're simply clear, transparent, honest while expressing your thoughts and making these audio comparisons between two great turntables. I'm an happy possessor of the RP3 model 2016 twicked with GrooveTracer subplatter, a Delrin plate and clamp... My RP3 is located on a Rega wallstand and my cartridge is a Hana-ML ... I'm totally satisfied with my Rega and may confirm all your opinions about this great turntable. Congrats for your fantastic videos! Stay safe! Marco

Thanks for all your hard work on this Ian. At first I thought it was a slam dunk for the Rega, sonically speaking, but the excellent points you made towards the end of your presentation on build quality made me think again. With the ability to so easily swap both mains and phono cables on the Mofi, there would seem to be ample opportunities to make changes to its voicing to bring it closer into line with the Rega which, other than the clearly superior bass, also had a marginally more lively edge to the sound, in my opinion. I really like that Mofi has introduced quality feet into the design - an often overlooked but vital aspect of turntable design. Considering this is their first venture at this important price point, I think it’s an extremely commendable effort.

So glad that you were thorough in making sure the playing field was level. At my low resolution in the samples, I couldn't detect much difference, but I'm listening on a terrible earphone as well, so that doesn't mean anything. Thank you for the in depth and very clear review Ian! As always it was a real pleasure listening to your thoughts. I'm on the market for a turntable around 1000€ but here in Europe where I live the rega is 700€ and the mofi is 1200€... I rather prefer the mofi looks but that's quite a difference in price so I will probably buy the P3. Warm regards from Portugal!

For my style of music I love that true bottom end presentation, that real dig deep bass sound! Awesome review and comparison as always :) I wish the "professional reviewers" were as honest and unmerciful as you are! I'm also constantly amazed at how well your side-by-side sonic comparisons translate into a KZbin video. The review made me wonder: since turntables ,like these reviewed ,might be integrated in home theatre systems where main speakers will be set to crossover at 60 HZ and a subwoofer will be used to output 60 to 20Hz, it would seem the MoFi would not have a bass issue if the sub was placed in the room to not send its sound wave in the direction of the turntable. At any rate, your review was fun, enthusiastic, and factual. You're the best.

Ian! YES! I’ve been waiting for this one, as I’m sure many people have. My friend, that was a crazy shoot-out! I honestly thought the MoFi was going to beat out the Rega, but a tie?! I watched the vid numerous times over the weekend before responding, because it just goes to show that you never know what to expect from the sometimes unexpected and insane world of Hi-Fi! Btw, I love the AVID up on it’s new pedastool like it’s standing center stage! But I digress. Even though it ended up a tie between the 2 decks, I still think I’d choose the MoFi just because of it’s wonderful build quality, and not having to worry about upgrades or fixes along the way. Another amazing vid, Ian! Thank you again for taking the time to do this one, because I’m sure it wasn’t an easy one at all! One more thing. I love your vintage skateboard collection! I skated for many years throughout the late 80’s & 90’s. Luckily, Hi-Fi and analog playback doesn’t destroy your knees after a while! Haha! Great job as always Ian. Glad to see this shootout because I am deciding between the two tables. This review makes me want the Mofi Studiodeck if its a tie. If I want a different cartridge for the Rega it is alot of messing around with shims (and then the cover wont close!) whereas the Mofi is more plug and play. Rega seems like it appeals most to someone who wants to do alot of tweaking.
@HiViNywschannel6 жыл бұрын
Dear Steve💪😊 thank you for catching up! True...if by sound, it is a tie, I would definitely go for the MoFi due to its ease of performing adjustments. And lots of good, warm friends.

Great review as usual Ian, I’m so glad that you have the patience that I lack. Personally I was disappointed with the P3, I had one back in the mid 80’s and the current model isn’t a whole lot different. Basically an mdf slab with both the motor and the Tonearm fixed to it. As for how it looks - so boring, that goes for the MoFi also! Any how, don’t think of a fall back career as an athlete, sorry my friend the dog is a clear winner in that shootout. Kind regards- Ron

I waited for this one. If I were in need for a deck in that price range or had a friend that was, I would for myself get the MoFi and recommend it. I have been down the Rega road with my old P3-24, which I enjoyed a great deal with the upgraded Groove tracer platter and Sub platter, but they aren't cheap options, but well worth it. I remember the spacer issues I had when using the Dynavector 10X5 on it. The MoFi just seems more put together and thought out. Great Job Ian and I just bought a Hana EH, I know you tested the EL, but I needed the extra headroom the EH provides and I also heard it when I went to visit Music Direct on the weekend. The Hana EH is a great cartridge and bass is pretty good and it's a pretty good tracker with very low noise. I have to get my Dynavector re-tipped, so now was a good time to try it and I got a reduced price of $379 at Needle Doctor, some one returned it. Music Direct has a Vinyl sale every weekend in their warehouse and they will have in house specials during that time as well. Music Direct also has two show rooms, one is a McIntosh room and the other one they rotate components in and out, but the last time Luxman was the featured components. One time the had the highly acclaimed Vandersteen model 7 that took them a month to set up and a call to Richard Vandersteen himself and a visit, according to them. I haven't seen the Model 7's since. Ian I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate what you are doing for the Vinyl community and the personal sacrifice that you are making and the extra storage that these extra components require. Are you at least trading some of the things that you have bought to help with the defray the cost of other components or are you putting things on Ebay or putting them up on Audiogon to curve your cost. Any way you look at it you are a stand up guy who is being known through out the world my friend and your channel has come up in quite a few forums that I belong to and I have recommended people to your channel. Keep up the good work and just know your efforts are not in vain and you are well appreciated and admired.

I have the Ultradeck with a Hana SL. Love it. Rega P6 was another option, but the Mofi dealer gave me a trade-in allowance on a ProJect Debut Carbon Esprit. I'm happy with the purchase. I couple comments - the Mofi has VTA adjustment w/o shims. Also, the suspect the Mofi will be a little better on a lesser rack, but I'm guessing. The isolation feet included with the Mofi tables are a real benefit. Great review. Love your channel.

Dear Buddy Chris! I agree, the isolation feet supplied by the MoFi are super duper good....and will afford a great benefit on a lesser rack. Well said my friend!!!! Thank you for catching up with me my friend!!and wishing you a happy Lunar New Year😄🎶🎵🎶🎶🎶

Hi Ian. Great video again! Loved watching it! Oh, tt update: it’s a td-124 now, Jelco 750DB arm And Nagaoka MP-110. Guess where that choice originated from ;) From what I heared, I’d probably prefer the MoFi, which really surprised me. To me, it sounded a bit warmer (my preference). But since the MoFi is 1600 euros And the Rega 900 here in the Netherlands, the choice would still be easy ;)

HiViNyws channel Ian, can I ask what cartridge you paired with your RP6? Kindest regards, Adam
@MrVinylObsessive6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, this was a bit of a surprise to me, because i thought the Mofi would have the edge in sound quality judging by its build quality. Rega TTs always had that minimalistic appearance, given me the impression that someone made the turntables inside a wooden shack fitted only with a hacksaw and a hot glue gun. 😁😁 Because of this i was always skeptical about Rega for a long time, but it's one of those examples in which you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. They obviously did their reaserch and homework, and they make a product with a good price/performance ratio.
@HiViNywschannel6 жыл бұрын
Dear Buddy :-D enjoy your P3 and Eroica LX!!! Sentimental Eroica L with the silver body you are still keeping!!! :-D Yay!!! It was my British friends who mentioned that Rega still looks a bit shed-like when compared to the MoFi, but then again, I still love the Rega P3 for its simplistic design, and you are right: their research and homework on lightweight plinth, as little as possible parts fitted onto the plinth to reduce points of resonance (sacrificing looks on the underside :-D ) DID PAY HUGE DIVIDENDS on the sound eventually. The P3 is a masterful act at its price of US$1000. Still unbeatable in terms of sound outrightly. And yes, superb price/performance ratio Brother!!! Love your beautiful needledrops.... and thank you for your adorable comments (hacksaw and hot glue gun)!! I hope my British friends see you comments and have a good hearty laugh! Warmest Regards, ~ ian

@HiViNywschannel6 жыл бұрын
Better I suppose Yeah Dear Buddy, thank you for your kind friendship too...great to have you catch up! Yes the P3...really never regretted. I bought it last year September after seeing for myself how the P1 trounced the Debut and HX500 with a simple Carbon cartridge. From there i know that the tonearm must be fantastic and living up to the claims from Rega that tireless and rigorous efforts at engineering the uniform bearings in the tonearm to ensure smoothness and zero free play, will result in faithful translation of our vinyl grooves' information (instead of sliding and missing out on information due to any free play, or just not corresponding due to stiffness and roughness in movement).
@vinylexplorer98176 жыл бұрын
Thanks for making this video! It's by far one of the best I've seen in our community! I was under the impression that MoFi will beat the P3 due its better manufacturing, but not. Even though Rega has this minimalist approach still sounding really good. Best part of this video starts at 19:34 though. You rock Ian!!! Kudos!

Hello from Switzerland Ian. I see your channel for the first time today (sorry), but I can honestly tell you that you really are a fantastic Man. I have a lot of RESPECT for the video you made, because I can see that behind the images there is a lot of excellent WORK that has been made by you for us. You are trustful, reliable, honest, and so totally in a positive mood. I will follow you definitely because like keeferdog say just below, we can really trust you. And I will from now on carefully listen and look at your perfect and enjoyable work. More than everything, I loved the end of the video, because you showed us that there is not only money - music - materialism... But also happiness in the real world with animals, friends, nature (in a big town) etc... It is a very intelligent video, that tells many more things that what you show and says. You are a very clever and intelligent man, and you are an example for us. So we all can look at you (that means : you / your work / your messages) with admiration and respect. I saw a lot of good things on the net, but your video goes a step further. In the french part of Switzerland I would say, Bravo cher Monsieur! (Congratulations Dear Man) and Merci beaucoup! Thank you for going through all this trouble, dear Ian. This tough comparison has boosted another one of my audiophile theories: Once you get into the field of quality TT's, whichever you choose, as long as they are still roughly punching in the same "weight class", will only contribute small differences to your overall sound, if any. Your cartridge & phone pre-amp choices (I'm leaving out speakers for the moment) will make a much bigger difference. All the best, ~ Josh

Hi Ian, great review as always. As a P3 owner I was hoping it would “wipe the floor” with the MoFI (a mate has one!). I have to agree, build quality is a lot better on the MoFI but it is more expensive. I never liked the hinges on the P3, they seem cheap and the lid seems to detach if you are not careful when opening. As a side note, I went ahead and purchased the Rega Aria and I am blown away, it’s like I’m hearing my vinyl for the first time again. Keep up the good work. Peace man. D

As others have already said, living in the UK the P3 is a no brainer based on price/performance ratio. Interestingly, I've seen some interesting things regarding the QC on the Studiodeck. There is someone else on YT that has done several needle drops on the Studiodeck, and the platter has noticeable wobble - it looks like the wobble on my AT-LP5, which is a vastly cheaper deck. Also I've head of bearings being insufficiently lubricated from the factory as well as decks playing slow (possibly because of the dry bearings). With that said, where prices are comparable, most of the user reviews seem to favour the Studiodeck over the Rega and I've certainly read some less than stellar reviews of Rega QC.
@christopherward50654 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, I was wondering if the perceived bass difference was down to the ways the two decks were isolated from structure borne feedback. The Rega I had sounded better on a wall shelf. I also find that bass is leaner, tighter and more detailed when there is no feedback. The review was excellent as ever. Thankyou for your hard work. The two decks arrived at problem solving from different directions in lots of ways. Both couple the motor to the bearing and the arm mount and this gives precision and resolution. The long belt would have a lower resonance frequency than the short belt and slightly more even drive. Rega P3 has evolved for a very long time its been on the market nearly 40 years and by the time you get to p8 and p10 you see where that seminal design gets to in its most evolved incarnations. I made some Klotz interconnects once long ago and took them to audition an amplifier at London retailer The Cornflake Shop in Windmill Street just off Tottenham Court Road. Rega’s Roy Gandy was in. He stopped in for a listen and asked me about the cables. I think I introduced the possibilities of Klotz cables to Roy Gandy. Their cables seem to be by Klotz.

Dear Sir :-D!!!! Hope you are doing well... hope our backs continue strong and healthy :-) . For friends in North America, the MoFi is very delicious! For the U.K. friends, the MoFi costs a fair bit more. For us in Singapore and many parts of the world, they cost the same, and Rega does enjoy better dealer service usually (being established for longer). It is quite a toss-up!!! Even I can't decide if i were a newbie or upgrader and decides to spend on only one of the two :-D ! Tough but fun to choose between the two :-D Hope your summer is good brother Martin. ~ ian

This is a very detailed review comparison of these two turntables. That bass dynamics, detail and low low roll off is a key factor in determining that the Rega P3 likely has a better main bearing and or tonearm bearing. The upper mid tonal quality of each table being similar, did not surprise me. I like that you use some terms I have not heard about before since they are as descriptive as viewer wants to know about both tables. I wonder how a Revolver (the original model, not the Rebel) with a Jelco 250 ST tonearm and Nagoaka MP 11B sound compared to either of those tables. The Mofi has a wider table bass and seems to be more robust than the Rega.

Agreed, something annoying about the bass on the P3 and sounds a bit less open to me than MoFi
@bigdoghat38273 жыл бұрын
Thanks for such an excellent comparison, I have been wondering about these two and how they compare and could never have compared them so well without this shoot-out. For me it's the Rega. The detail and top end airiness around the higher frequency sounds is a touch more apparent to me on the Rega and it has more space around the higher frequency sounds in general. Eg at 3:21 to 3:30 the hi hat on the Mofi sounds more muted and on the Rega you are better able to hear that the hi hat is rapidly panning from left to right, it sounds more open and has more space around it. At 4:28 the tip of the drum stick striking the ride cymbal is more open sounding on the Rega and the attack of the stick on the cymbal is more apparent. It's a little more rounded sounding on the Mofi. Ditto for the rapidly played chimes (glockenspiel?) at 12:10 to 12:12, the Rega has more clarity on these couple of seconds, the Mofi sounds more muted. And brushes in general on the jazz and orchestral sounds are more tucked in on the Mofi and more spacious on the Rega. I can easier hear the edge of the brush touching the drum on the Rega. I'm thinking the differences are so slight in the higher frequencies that it's a matter of preference in terms of what one likes. Both decks sound fantastic but for me, I prefer the slight edge of clarity and space on the Rega with higher frequency content coupled with your comment on the punchiness of the Rega in the low end. However, the build quality differences seems to be significant and maybe with a different cartridge or preamp the Mofi could shine a bit more in the top and bottom end?

Nice review Ian, as always. The ability to upgrade P3, is the greatest asset in my opinion.

I have this same setup in my room. The Mofi studiodeck, with Nagoaka mp-200, and Schiit mani. I also have a Fisher 400 receiver for power, and Epos Epic 2s for speakers. A very nice combo in my bedroom.

I really like how the mofi looks much better where you can see the belt externally with the platter on but the P3 sounds much more clearer and crisp and deeper of course it's a turntable so I would choose the sound quality first but really like the look of the mofi.
