Black Emperor and 'Dead Flag Blues' is one of the most memorable post rock tracks for me, but 65daysofstatic (from my birth city) and 'I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood', and This Will Destroy You and 'I Believe in Your Victory' are others. There are so many good bands to choose from.

Mogwai have actually done quite a lot of soundtrack work, both as a band and in collaboration with other composers (e.g. with Clint Mansell for the soundtrack to The Fountain). This song is somewhat atypical for them as it has vocals (most of their music doesn't), but it's a great track. Mogwai are often considered the top of the heap of post-rock for very good reason.

Yes yes yes! The Kings of post rock! I've seen Mogwai live about a dozen times and they never fail to deliver. They have a more than considerable body of work to explore, I'd suggest "Mogwai fear Satan" next, to really get to the core of their sound and style.

Mogwai are known for their long, drawn out, guitar driven instrumental tracks. Often with little to no no vocals at all. "Auto rock" or "Glasgow mega snake" would be good choices for slightly shorter tracks.

Mogwai is my favorite band to listen to when I’m having trouble sleeping, although I also enjoy listening to them when I just wanna chill. This is one of my favorite songs by them. It’s so sweet and airy, it takes me away from everything. It was fun watching you react to it. I’m not at all surprised that you enjoyed it. All of Mogwai’s music is good, but I recommend focusing on their early stuff initially, before moving on to their later work.

If you want a sampler of the first half of Mogwai's discography then Special Moves is a live album with a very nice mix. It has a shortened (but incredible) version of Mogwai Fear Satan, which is a song some are suggesting. They have a very clear progression album to album and there's a lot to pick apart if you get into them.

Looking through my Mogwai stuff now, I've got so much, vinyls and cds... I bought their first 7" when it came out in 1996: Tuner/Lower on Rock Action. Twenty five years later they got their first UK Album #1 with As the Love Continues in February this year. Saw them every time they came here (Montréal) and played them hundred of times on my radio show, which lasted 23 years. Funny our host picked one of the rare song with lyrics (and not Aidan Moffat!). And I agree with everyone: MOGWAI FEAR SATAN must be next. And yes live, dear host, Mogwai are quite amazing.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion's "Black Waters Blowed/Engine Broke Blues" is an emotional powerhouse, also their song "God Bless Our Dead Marines" (well, and pretty much every thing they've done). They also have strings (violin and upright bass) along with their guitars and bass guitars. Silver Mt. Zion is one of several offshoot projects of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who really put post-rock on the map, but ended up having an even bigger impact on me over the years.

I saw Mogwai live in Buenos Aires and was completely blown away by their performance and the vibe that was generated among the audience. The wall of sound makes you float. One of the most memorable experiences of my life. Also, the song "Rano Pano" live is something else.

I remember at some point during a show being in a trance and feeling the sound passing through my body and levitating me. PS. Mogwai can produce those incredible layers live, and I would say they are more powerful live than the restraint of many of their recordings.

Yes that's exactly what i think too. The live performance is outstanding, they take the songs up to a new level. I'm from Argentina, i saw them only once, and it was the most beautiful experience i had, at least in terms of sound. I remember just feeling the vibration from the drum bass hitting in my body like lazer shots or something like that. I also remember i made an english friend right before the show started, i shared with him my blunt and later saw his face enjoying the music as much as i did. We all were so happy that night, thanks to Mogwai.

Just want to take this opportunity to suggest some Neurosis again. One of the original "post metal" bands - post rock with metal guitars and growling. Imho the album "the eye of every Storm" is their best, particularly the title track, or "A Season In the sky". However there is a lively debate among fans on which era is their best, so be prepared to have people question whatever track you choose.

I know that I am characteristically late to the show, but slightly earlier Mogwai had some powerful compositions that were on par with the combination of The Who + Philip Glass with the tonal discipline of Black Sabbath. See: Like Herod, Summer, Mogwai Fear Satan, and Helicon 2. It's astounding in the genre of Post Rock. I can tell you that live, these tracks are not only represented honorably, but far exceeded. I'd adore seeing reactions to this period. And, as always, thanks for all you do!! Despite being a life-long music head, I've been introduced to some crazy-good artists through you.

The only reason I know Mogwai. Over 15 years ago I worked in a store that bought and sold things. People would bring in CDs, and I mean stacks of CDs, some people would bring in brand new albums, cause they just wanted a pure rip of the album, or people clearing old collections. I mean, were talking people selling Smashing pumpkins box sets, rare concert LPs for NIN, and almost any other album you could think of. And I ripped CDs to no end. we had a stereo where i could give some of the CDs a listen, and if I liked the first 20 seconds even a bit, straight into the laptop. Someone brought in Mogwai, happy songs for happy people, and I was hooked. The entire Atomic took me on an adventure, before I started smoking pot, and now that I do.... I will get back to you about that.
