1990 to 1998 Azharuddins peak time . He entered international cricket in 1985 with 3 centuries in a row in first 3 tests , hit 2 backto back test centuries against Pajistan in 1987, got his highest test score of 199 against srilanka in 1986, scored fastest odi century aganst newzealand in 1988 ....and was ready for greatness from 1990 to 1998 . In 1999 he suffered loss of form and 2000 he got banned leaving many records behind him.

He's class batsman there's no doubt about it..if not match fixing allegations he would have retired or should have retired.. he was 37 when he was banned...he was not at his best during his last days...he scored hundred in his last test but then he was struggling in odis...what records he will be breaking had if he continued to play? Sachin Tendulkar surpassed him as highest run scorer in odis in 2000 at Nairobi against Newzealand.. could he surpass Brian Lara highest individual score in tests or atleast could he surpass Sunil Gavaskar highest score of 236 not out which was broken by laxman in 2001.. could he break Saeed Anwar record scoring 195 in odis which is highly impossible for him batting at number 4 or 5 in ODIs..He would have accumulated few more runs nothing more than that.. I'm not insulting Azhar.. he's an artist but there's nothing much he can do even if he wasn't banned because of match fixing allegations..He was 37 and his form wasn't that great to break or set any records.

@@venuturupallimurthy Azhars run of form,once he hit a purple patch lasted for a year and a half with a string of fifties and hundereds. That was always his pattern. in his whole career.When he scored a century in his last test against southafrica he had just returned to form. In fact his earlier test had got him 87against srilanka . He was fittest in the team at 37 and would have played for 2more years . About 15tests ,4to 5more hundereds, and 1000more odi runs .and 1000more test runs. That would have been a great feat by itself at that time. He was a world record holder of most catches in odis 156 . It is still an indian unbeaten record,perhaps would have still remained a world record if he continued for two more years.

@@riyazahmed208 I appreciate your observation however I would he wasn't in great form when he made his come back in the year 2000. He scored a hundred against South African team but his form dipped in subsequent ODIs. I don't think he can do anything great in odis. However test cricket is different cup of tea..But by then it's time for young cricketers to prove their mettle..He was absolutely fit at the age of 37 but he wasn't in great form..His odi form was poor at that time but maybe in tests he might have scored runs..156 catches in ODIs was a record but he played 312 ODIs for that.. during 90's I have observed Azhar dropping many catches let it be tests or odis.. By any measure his career was over by 2000. But I am disappointed by the way it was ended..

When india went tour to srilanka at 1999 one day series, he played very well in that series and got 88 and man of the match, he came back to form, but unfortunately he was dropped after the series and banned...

Azhar talent was next to Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara..but he didn't have the focus of Sachin Tendulkar or Lara... Azhar played some magnificent knocks in 90's but he failed many times when it mattered most..For his calibre he would have scored 10000 test and odi runs..when Azhar was in full flow even Sachin Tendulkar enjoyed watching his batting at other end..all these are one side of coin but to win match Sachin Tendulkar was only hope in 90's especially early 90's.. Azhar as captain won many trophies because of Sachin Tendulkar brilliance with bat..in 1998 either Sachin Tendulkar or Sourav Ganguly scored hundreds while opening which made job easier for Azhar.. Srinath and kumble were at their best during Azhar captaincy... Azhar better than Sachin Tendulkar this statement doesn't make any sense

Azhar had good record against them but Sourav Ganguly scored runs in ODIs especially ICC organized tournaments... Sachin Tendulkar too scored runs against them in ODIs and tests.. Sachin Tendulkar scored hundred in 1992 test series and 1996 test at Capetown..in 1992 he scored hundred when no other batsman scored 20..In 1997 at Capetown he and Azhar involved in 222 run partnership for 6th wicket.. Sachin Tendulkar scored magnificent 155 at blufonteim which was Sehwag debut test.. Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag both scored hundreds in that match..So Azhar is not only player who scored runs against 90's South African team

Azhar's innings in Hero cup semis remind me of Aravinda de Silva 66 in WC semis at same ground. Eden Gardens had that similar pattern of matches. WC semis 1996 Ind v SL is a mirror image of both the Hero cup semis and finals 1993 that India played. Except in 96 semis we got the taste of our own medicine. Similarities are: 1. India won toss and choose to bowl in 96 semis. West indies won toss and choose to bowl in 93 hero cup finals. Both captains made wrong calls on pitches that deteriorated as the match wore on 2. Sri Lanka lost early wickets in 96 semis and were rescued by Aravinda's special knock and posted a decent total. Similarly India lost early wickets in 93 Hero semis against SA and were rescued by a special innings from Azhar and posted a decent total 3. India were chasing against SL in 96 WC semis and were looking good at 98/1, then Sachin got out. Sri Lankan spinners then took over and Indian batting crumbled. Similarly West Indies were cruising at 57/1 in 1993 Hero Cup Finals. Then Lara got out to Sachin and then Indian spinner Kumble took over and West Indies crumbled So India got the taste of their own medicine at Eden Gardens in WC semis from the Hero cup matches wins
