a good example of not doing the female animal overly curvy is Tigress from Kung Fu Panda. She just looks like a tiger, they didn't need to give her exaggerated feminine features for us to know she is female. Also at least some of these pet peeves are just due to things animators do to make their job easier, and I think we should give those animators a break cause they tend to be overworked.
@Tenshii_Artii Жыл бұрын
Yes! Tigress is a beast! She’s not far from being built like Tai Lung, but you can still tell she is female. Just one with absolute discipline. I loved the characters in KFP for the reason that they just looked like their animal counterparts in real life. But from their personalities and nature alone, you can tell how Unique each of them are. I personally loved Viper. The way the animators execute a snake to be so feminine, elegant and graceful without needing it to be exaggerated. They could have gone with a ‘sexy snake’ trope, but I love how calm and sweet she is.

Funnily enough, I really enjoy the “out of place textures” thing in some contexts. It reminds me of the Cartoon Network show “Chowder”, and can add some pop if it’s intended as a stylistic choice (ie. Not someone just messing up on a clothing pattern because they don’t understand folds, but rather something to intentionally make a character stand out, like the scrolling textures in Chowder.) It takes some time off of the animation process, and can add a level of visual flare because it is so obvious that it wouldn’t normally be that way.
@niccilefevre Жыл бұрын

Imo even the visual clarity of a flat pattern is preferable to noisy or artificially warped pattern textures trying to make something *very* 2D look barely 3D. Like the hair is not super opaque, it's just a thin veil of hair. The only time I get rid of the eye is when the character has super thick hair that would obstruct their vision- like emo side bangs, or a character intentionally covering their eye because of tattoo/demonic seal/blind eye/etc.

Simplicity or complexity don't make an oc fun to draw. What matters is that you enjoy drawing them. Some artists have detailed ocs because they think it's fun to draw that much. Some don't like to spend as much time on the drawings and that's okay too. If you're simply anxious because you don't want to forget details, make reference sheets of your character. Or, as I've seen other artists do, make a character and *keep remaking that character* until you have a design you're fully happy with. By then, you'd have drawn the character so much that it would be engrained in your muscle memory, but you'd also have found a design that you enjoy enough to draw repeatedly.

The only time I've seen a "corporate artstyle" pulled off well is in Kurzgesagt's animations, but I'm not sure if their artstyle even counts as corporate. Their art has a few differences and actually reminds me of a German news channel that was designed specifically for kids. It simplified complicated current events for children to understand and used a similar artstyle, if I remember correctly. Given that Kurzgesagt is a German studio as well, the origins of their specific style might not be the corporate style, but those German animations meant to educate children. Edit: the children news show is called "Logo!" and I just remembered that Kurzgesagt used to be a German PBS. I don't know if Logo! is one too, but if that's the case maybe that's why their art feels similar to me. They would likely have similar people working on both.

Their only other expression is “angry” Robot designs do this well. While some of portal’s robots have some eyebrow equivalents, some of them don’t. So the eyelids are also used in the expressions. I'm fine with people drawing sexualized characters (unless they are minors), just be a little consistent.

For comic book design to movies, I saw it like this. The movies are the actual look of them. The comic book design is how an artist would draw them for comics if they only got a glimpse of them. Like, say, you saw Superman flying around and drew a cape on him, but he’s actually wearing a red long coat with blue sleeves.

I get slightly annoyed when someone re designs some random character (ex: Luz Noceda or Amity Blight are some I've seen the most) and they just add tons of detail. I don't really have a big problem with it but my eyes get slightly confused trying to find where to look. Remember kids, just because a character design is simple doesn't mean it's bad.
@error-try-again-later Жыл бұрын
It's because nobody knows how to use detail 😭 Basically our eyes will naturally travel from the most detailed areas to the most simplistic ones. You're supposed to leave the most important parts of the design as blank as possible (so they're easy to read at a glance) while the detailed parts either frame them or flow towards them. What you're _not_ supposed to do is cram a million ribbons, buttons or jewels onto every part of an outfit.

Bruh, the "dark skinned characters with white hair" trope isn't really a "trope" lmao. It's just a character design choice. Like, I have a lot of different characters, and quite a few are on the darker side of the skin tone spectrum. But because I have a lot of characters, some of them just happen to have different colored hair lol. This is true for my lighter-toned characters as well. Also I just really fucking love white hair. Naturally, I'll have characters with white hair with a vast range of skin tones because that's.. just what I like to draw. As that one person pointed out, there are a lot of other black or brown anime characters who have dark hair and varying skin tones, but there are also plenty of anime characters with white hair who are pale.

I actually really liked the "hair over the eye" style, I remember retro animes doing that and it looked so pretty! I wouldn't recommend it all the time but in certain styles it made it look like their hair was silky/sheen-like. I had no idea it was critiqued as a "lazy/inaccurate way of drawing"

And I agreed if I’m going for a realistic look I would cover the eye. Sometimes I even forget the character eyes are cover when I’m drawing 🥲
@nomoretwitterhandles Жыл бұрын
To be fair, anime hair are just chunks of where hair would theoretically go, so technically speaking, it's not a terrible idea to keep the second eye visible under the hair because it may be more sparse or soft in real life. If you want to know a life hack for how to get away with this while also making it look nice, just take your eraser and make some "invisible hair strands" by erasing parts of the eye/eyebrow that follows the hair. For example, if you have a clump of hair that goes over the eye only partially, use the eraser tool and erase the parts of the eye that touches the inside of the hair chunk. Do this for every chunk that overlaps with it. If you are feeling fancy, erase a few more bits of the eye to make it seem like there are more strands. Now you have an eye that doesn't look super out of place!

As a character designer, This video was a bit frustrating. It should be said that all of the above trends are valid. Even if many are not my preference, I will defend them. Moreover, many of these 'tropes' were critiques of art styles, and not character design. Regardless, we shouldn't be judging creative visions because they're not to our tastes. A lot of work goes into character design, because it's incredibly complicated. That said, I sometimes have 'too much detail'. I find these designs funner to draw and look at. They give more, the more you look. Never had a problem redrawing them either.
@kimaly7718 Жыл бұрын
Also about the characters design gets extra details after they turn into live action movies.. I think it's actually a good thing! Like the comic version is so simplified because they had to draw them over and over again for so many times that it's just impossible to give them details.. But movies can just make 1 costume to use for the entire movie and even the next one! And besides.. If you really sticked to what they really look like from the comics.. I can only imagine it will look terrible.. Like some of them only use tights with stripes on them and boom done.. It will not translate well in the movie.. So yeah.. I think the costume looks great with all the " unnecessary" details 😅 it's just my opinion tho haha
@goj1_lag00n Жыл бұрын
You really need to do it sparingly. Some things may look great even if they're comic-accurate and some are Aquaman. The problem with most live-action superhero suit designs is that they all look the same. They just take OG design and add a bunch of lines without putting any thought into it. And desaturated colors, of course.

What pisses me off is that a lot of newer artists don't seem to understand that sexualizing characters is not a bad trope, it's an entire stylistic choice. They've just been taught that 'sexy = bad' but if the entire point of the character's aesthetic is to be sexy for a production that's mean to be schlocky, then sexualising them is the entire point of the artwork. Just because you're one of those artists who likes to pretend you're a sfw cinnamon roll who'd never draw anything risque yet still draws buff muscular pokemon morphs with ken doll crotches and tries to claim it's wholesome, doesn't mean more confidently sexualized characters aren't legit. a lot of these examples are likely coming from unconfident artists who are trying really hard to be 'proper' without understanding why a lot of these older cliches and aesthetic tropes are timeless. There is an art form to doing good schlock, and once you can understand how to purposefully straddle that line between tacky and tasteful (or just outright embrace tastelessness in a way that turns it into flavor) to play with the viewer's expectations, you won't truly be at peace with the universe. Using your 'warrior princess' example: why does it have to be practical? Nobody watches anime and power fantasy because they want to see 'practical'. You want that thrill of seeing the warrior princess/prince dressed in harem silks about to fight a dragon and think to yourself "wow, she/he is so confident and powerful that they're wearing attire for THEIR pleasure in a life or death situation, that's absurd and not something that would happen in real life, and that's what makes it cool."

That’s not who we are. 2 Things 1) Just cause it doesn’t affect you doesn’t mean others aren’t affected like yourself. The memes are hilarious tho- As someone who is tan, it would be nice to see more black characters with a variety of skin tones because not every black person has either just dark tan. Like, have you seen a group of black people? They come in different tones because every bloodline went through different directions. Where are the character with REALLY dark skin? Similar case with Asians, where are the dark skinned Asian characters?? It’s annoying that if someone is racially ambiguous, they’re automatically headcanonned as Black, even when the character is in an Asian country. It makes me sad because there are so many Asians out there that are tan and a lot of people just think of Asian as light skinned.

Funnily enough, the trope where they make female non-human characters so exaggeratedly feminine is more homophobic than transphobic. The trope originated mostly in the 1920s, where artists and animators wanted to add features to female non-human characters to tell the audience that this character was female so that people wouldn’t think the couple are gay (ex: Mickey and Minnie). It got more extreme overtime however, where they would exaggerate the features of non-human female characters so much to the point that it just looks so incredibly awkward and sometimes uncanny.

Let's just all agree that majority of these ''issues'' aren't, in actuality, real issues. If it looks good, go on with it, use it as much as you like. It all depends from person to person, not everybody will like a certain style or design, and that's alright. I hope these ''pet peeves'' don't disappear, if it happened it would only mean that ''original'' choices of design would also be overused. I like to embrace variety in all forms, rare or cliché.

So, because you can see more of his face, he looks more trustworthy. But whenever he acts more deranged and psychopathic, his eye is not visible under the bang anymore.

as a person with glasses, i think the trope where a character with glasses which fall off to reveal just little dots is actually really funny. like, it sort of holds true to real life because you just look like a completely different person without glasses, and your eyes look a decent bit smaller, especially if you are farsighted. also i am slightly guilty of the whole eyes showing from behind hair thing, except i only do it when the hair covers up like, the edge of the eye. if the majority of the eye isnt covered, i'll still draw it. my particular pet peeve with design is when characters dont look distinct from each other. sure, characters should be similar in a way that makes them fit in the setting, but i want to actually be able to differentiate them from each other. i can excuse same face syndrome for really stylized and simple designs, but i often see it in anime where so many characters just look the same. like, i see a lot of anime just give their characters super complex outfits and extremely multicoloured hair but like, they look indistinguishable from each other. the absolute worst case of this i've seen was in Hetalia (which i only know because my friends wanted me to see how bad it was), and by god, almost all of them are the same blonde man with the same face and hairstyle. hell, even the guy meant to represent china looks like a white dude and has the exact same face as the others. another thing i hate is when characters never make any extreme facial expressions in order to stay looking pretty. characters just making the most visceral expressions is so much more entertaining and just fun to draw. it just irks me a little when an artist never strays too far from the same plain expression in order to preserve the character's look. i wish less people were afraid to ugly up their characters a little because it makes it so much more enjoyable to see.

Detailed designs are only a problem when they're not balanced right. Many artists seem to think that the important parts of the design (like the face) should be the most detailed, when really, the exact opposite is true. The important parts should be distinguishable at a glance. But adding more details _elsewhere_ can be great at directing attention to where you want it, because our eyes will naturally travel from there to the clearest areas! One of my favourite examples is Sailor Moon's hair. She technically has 2 hairstyles at once (plus accessories) but her iconic twintails flow down alongside her clothes, so it's like they frame whatever outfit she's wearing. Plus, it's not all crammed into the same area. The long parts add some balance to the chunky headpieces.

For adding elements to superhero costumes, they have said that simple spandex doesn't look good on film, when it relates to normal humans. So, they do their best to try to make the costumes look plausible. When I saw that you included patterns that don't match the contours of the character, like the guy's shorts, it reminded me that I have been seeing this more lately, and it feels so lazy to me. When it's aimed at animation, I get it, but these were for final digital art pieces. I have seen tutorials on how to properly warp textures to match your subject, so I'm not sure how these other artists are getting away with this. lol On a final note, people should be able to express themselves through art in any way that makes sense for them. While we might not like these things, it doesn't make sense to attack them into doing it differently. It falls into the same category of advice that was never asked for.

I'm going to be obtuse for a bit and justify the whole sexualized armor trope. What it comes down to is metaphors in aesthetics and the idealized form. All of our creations are fantastical in some way. By the nature of them being detached from reality, ultimately their dress is metaphor. We have real life examples of people fighting in impractical outfits: Bull Fighters. They wear lavish clothing while fighting an animal that can weigh over 400kg, and this is done for a couple of reasons. First, it is all ceremonial performance, so aesthetics are important. Second, against large beasts things such as chainmail and plate armor offer almost no protection. A bull would completely crush somebody wearing full plate mail. Armor was designed to fight against other humans, and as such it offers very little protection against other things. Character design is ultimately idealized, driven from conceptions in our head and put to pen. Naturally, we default to the idealized forms of men and women when conceiving of them. This can create an internal mental conflict between what we want to see and what is practical. This is partly why we see the hourglass shape put into animals: it is visual coding. The idealized form for women, that is the hourglass shape, and all of their distinctive features that differ from men. Thus, we get the whole bikini armor dilemma: We have the idealized womanly form, coded with other features to indicate that they're a ninja/warrior/fighter of some kind. Idealized forms are attractive, but not necessarily sexualized. The qualities that drive human sexuality (health, cohesiveness, status) also drive our concepts of beauty. Beauty is aesthetic morality, after all, so our preferred shapes are naturally going to be attractive. All people naturally are naked, and adorn clothes to hide ourselves. There's power in attractiveness and sexuality. To boldly display the human form often times is to assert the inherent strength possessed by an ideal body. It isn't just women depicted fighting in bikinis and form fitting clothing. Look at Conan the Barbarian, for example, to see men fighting in loincloths. Hell, the ancient Greeks used to oil-wrestle completely naked. Humans are naturally oriented to want to have sex, so our aesthetics will incorporate these desires. This is what I mean when I say that the dress is metaphor. The bikini armor warrior lady says several things about the character. It depicts femininity, strength, boldness, and either the luck or the determination to achieve such a shape. It is also very pleasant to look at. There is nothing necessarily wrong with it. Now, I don't want to delve too deep into ad hominem, but I find all the people who hate this kind of stuff are usually self-conscious girls, or enthralled by an ideology that purposely wants to destroy the concept of beauty. Beauty creates inequality, after all. I can understand the practicality argument in a certain sense, since it can be given that certain degrees of realism will require a certain degree of practical design. However, given that all art is fantasy, the level of realism given is the one that is clearly drawn on the page. Thus, most arguments for practicality are self-evidently wrong. Practicality gets hijacked by other ideals that use that argument disingenuously, instead of being direct and objecting to the ideals and level of fantasy depicted. This is all a lot of fluffy words to say that there's nothing wrong with something like bikini armor.
@starstorm1267 Жыл бұрын
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do bikini armor, it just becomes a problem when that’s ALL the armor design for female characters. What people mostly have a problem with sexy female armor is that most of the time, it’s so blatantly done for fan service and nothing else. There are no other designs for armor for the female characters that isn’t made to be sexy in some way. It’s important to have variety in the armor design for both female and male characters, for some battles require a full amount of armor for protection and others require little for more movement. That’s how I see it anyway.
