A scam is when people take money and run off with it but since the project goals weren't even remotely met, it's not surprising that the show hasn't become a reality. Also, 80k is not a "ridiculous" amount of money for an animation project. People have this idea that artists should ideally work for free (because "passion") but in the end it's a proper job that requires insane amounts of training. The bullying that allegedly went on behind closed doors sucks though. However, the way I see it after learning about it in this video, the project simply failed because of the lack of experience of the people involved and wasn't a criminal endeavour that would justify the label "scam".

People are also ignorant to how much work, effort and money animation actually takes to produce proper animated shows at 12-24 FPS. Actual industry level animations are a completely different ballpark to KZbin videos like Jaiden, Emirichu and Domics.

My dude, $80K for a 7 minute pilot episode is a RIDICULOUS amount of money. That episode could be done by a single animator who has well rounded skills. The designs are simple. The backgrounds are simple. The physics and motion are also simple and cartoony. Overall it is an easy project. There was no need to go full on big studio mode and set aside money for merch and hire a full staff and buy ToonBoom (most expensive of all the animation software) licenses for a 7 minute pilot project. 🤦🏾♀️ Bruh. Here on KZbin, there are animators who have made short studio-level animations by themselves or with a small team of animator friends using KickStarters. None of those kickstarters came nowhere close to $80k (most are below $10K) and they *delivered* the promised product.

@@ManicPixie-bb7wc My dude, it is not. Kickstarter takes a massive chunk - and fullfillment can cut your number in half. Even a small number of people working on this, plus sound, plus voice, plus music.... nope, you'd be in the red before completion EASY. Especially for Episode 1 where all backgrounds, rigs, designs, and quality control is built out the first time from scratch. For animation - that still would have been ridiculously UNDER funded. And as an animator - I am speaking from an indie animation, two man shop perspective - not a large big studio.

I mean, I don't blame the person. Running an animation project at 18 is an insane undertaking- it's easy to imagine just whapping something out but it does take a lot of money and people. Background art can cost a few hundred, each staff member would probably take around $3k a month in both benefits and pay. If you have 10 staff members it'd be $30k a month. Plus, toon boom is expensive- if they're doing multiple licenses then it might add an extra $3-$5k a month. They also will probably be looking at office space, electricity etc. Which is all very understandable. The issue is, it's an 18 year old getting pushed forward and ramped up towards making an entire studio from scratch for something that likely doesn't need an entire studio. They also probably felt the need to include the people that pushed the campaign forward- so producers etc were added when they too were probably not needed or qualified. I feel bad for the artist, hopefully they go onto making some cool stuff. I don't think this was a scam though- and can see the logic in their funding goal

"Passion projects" meaning you can't be paid reminds me of people saying things like "if it's a vocation, if you're doing the job you want to do, why do you want a pay rise?" I think that attitude sucks. Granted, I don't think this was handled well - why does merchandise have such a stupidly large section, considering the goal of this was mostly to bring a cartoon to life, not sell merch -- but also, like, wouldn't that pay for itself? (if it's good). I think this was mishandled, yes, but I also think people hate its failure to deliver their expectations in excessive amounts in calling it a scam. I mean, this was essentially started off by an eighteen-year-old - someone who is barely a young adult and for argument's sake is still likely to be impulsive compared to longer-lived adults. It's not surprising they jumped headfirst into a project without actually using that head to think things through sufficiently... Also, I do think they could have covered their fund allocation more explicitly and with more clarity and had more of a plan, but... like, dang. And if that mistreatment allegation is true, that sucks. This is a good learning experience though for any up-and-coming animators and show creators.
@elenatheartistandgamer2001 Жыл бұрын
As a future animator I know animation takes a long time too make and especially if you don't have time and your doing everything by yourself. So I would be surprised if the artist got overwhelmed or got to ambitious to quickly and then all of a sudden you know what to do with the project. People can't except a show to be done quickly like do you want it to look like a mess? Plus it cost a lot of money for production to even start and it would be the equivalent to selling your soul to company you give you creation too and hoping it will sell. So I feel bad for the artist in question. This is actually the shit that stresses me out ;-;

When it comes to creating an animated show, $80,000 is a ridiculously low budget for even a single 10 to 15-minute episode. To put it in perspective a 20 minute episode of most Western animated shows runs between $1,000,000 and $2,000,000. Even little indie studios doing it on a shoestring budget will need around $300,000.

But people still try to make in big in indie animation because of how a lot of studios (especially nowadays) are pretty in favour of making boring or inoffensive content to make it as marketable as possible, which is very creatively crushing for a lot of people and pushes them into trying to make it big on their own.

Just want to remind everyone that the people who made the Velma reboot show didn't have any good intentions. Not for representation and definitely not for fans of the scooby gang. They admitted to hating the original and I think they showed their hatred well. Them changing her skin was most likely to get it the amount of attention it got, before ppl successfully forgot it's existence.

Haven't seen your channel for a while and seeing this video feels surreal because I know Lemonteaflower in person (not friends or anything) and there's a lot of people in Mexico that really hate her or have a bad image of her. Seeing that a bad image of her reached your channel and more people in another countries feels strange, but I think it's okay to give advice on people that makes really bad mistakes.

i'm surprised their account is still around, and they are a Disgaea fan too thats pretty cool, glad they got another chance to work in animation after all that.

But the chunk of money for merch makes sense for me, you make merch, sell it, and earn profit as the merch will be a marked up price, this profit could be put back into the project to generate consistent income for the project?

This is why believing that you can change and create anything with only the internet is purely delussional. All the successful things that happens in the net is just the surface and the real deal always happens in the offline world. Touch some grass people.

I feel so bad for the 18 year old animator (as a 19 year old majoring in animation and hoping to make my own animated show one day in the future). If my art would have gained this much popularity I would have been so excited and it would be so unfortunate and sad for it to flop. The artist's career is just starting, however, and I'm sure they will make great things in the future!

watchin as i draw lol 7:26 9:39 well making merch helps support show- well would have helped basically, havin merch is a way to make more money, like a loop? which is how alot of youtube series run (take helluva for example or even hazbin, maybe lackadaisy) but thats usually for AFTER a pilot lol which is why its alot of money, which shouldve went into other stuff too it sucks this never became a show, there's so many fandom animations i see being made, these days as a starter, but still need a better team

Naw, bears roaming is common in Canada, as well as other wildlife. The more near a forest (which at least in my province is everywhere) you are, the more likely. Literally pokemon hiding in all the wild grass. Also even at the time, I thought the project was kinda cringe. I don't have much faith in what I feel was a cash grab, no matter how well intended to follow through, it is what it is. I say that because banking on a meme really is that. Sad the artist lost money on it.

this is honestly just sad, it mostly seems like it was canceled because people just thought animators work for free. That budget seemed pretty reasonable IMO.

It is pretty normal to see bears in Northern & rural Canada. Small towns, small city suburbs, along highways, on walking trails. Its also very common to put down bears who get too confortable entering human spaces. The consensus is that if they know human homes/towns/garbages = food then they'll just keep coming back because its easier than hunting. If a bear is gonna be relocated they have to *really* be relocated, far enough from wherever they were getting into human stuff that they wint be able to (or wont bother to) make the trek back. And all of that process is more expensive and time cinsuming than putting them down. I personally believe in relocation but I know from experience that its usually not what happens with them. Maybe they'd bother to do it with a cub cause it has a whole life ahead of it, and may struggle more to find its way back to human towns. Buuuuut on the flipside the cub now knows human towns = easy food and it is at higher risk of coming back to that town, or another one, as an adult. 🤷♂️

Hello I'm new to art and because of you i decided to avoid the Art Community and will publish a comic series someday. I can't deal with people who are chronically online and will just demoralize you. No wonder social media platforms ignore these problems cause they think art is.just copy and paste which is insulting.

I find it quite humorous that people had to complain about some kid's account containing a slur when there was much more bad things going on. Was promoting the project on that account professional? No, but I find it ridiculous that, that was being pushed as a complaint when there was worse going on in the background.

Back in the day, I had heard the big controversies were: - She verbally abused her animators (screaming and insulting them) and failed to pay them - The picture that inspired the memes actually had a much sadder ending (the bear cub died) - The real life person didn't give their consent for their image to be used in the animation - She used designs that she didn't come up with without the permission of the creators. - There were legal reasons why you can't just reuse official uniform designs without permission And that's just the stuff I remember.

Lemon always got dealt a really bad hand, honestly. She used to work on the show "Villainous" by Alan Ituriel as a storyboard artist and I remember (back when it was still small), people were threatening to boycott it and rate it badly simply because she was on the team. She would get so much hate that it was always ridiculous. None of it ever made sense either, like seen in this video. She was always kind and chill when she was in on Villainous and I hope she's doing better now. Her art is great, her style is unique and recognizable, and she's never done anything intentionally malicious.
