Love your channel, Bonnie, but your comparison seems incomplete. I have both lab grown diamond and moissanite rings. In terms of durability, I wear my moissanite ring almost every day since 2017, and only wear the lab grown on special occasions. I haven't had to get either cleaned or dipped yet, so the setting does matter a lot - I totally agree with you there. My engagement ring is a lab grown diamond, but I had a custom H&A moissanite ring made because I was too nervous to wear the OG. Nobody has ever noticed the difference; only a jeweler or a really trained eye could tell. In fact, when I wear the moissanite, I often get asked if I just had my ring cleaned or if I just got it. It looks that good, even years later, and I'm fairly clumsy and reckless with the ring. Moissanite does sparkle way more than diamonds. As you mentioned, the sparkle can look like a rainbow, but there are different cuts of moissanite that will reduce this. For example, a Hearts & Arrow cut reduces the sparkle that a round brilliant cut has, and has some "romantic" symbolism behind it. There are also Harro Gems that will match oval diamonds better, and crushed ice moissanite as well. The only gem that can scratch moissanite is another moissanite or a diamond. It is one of the hardest materials out there. Honestly, I love my lab grown but I've worn it a total of maybe 20 times in 5 years. We got it appraised recently, and it is worth 1/4 of what he paid because lab grown prices have been dropping, due to more diamond alternatives hitting the market. In 2018, I bought another moissanite ring for $400 and I recently sold it for $650, but it really depends on the setting. Moissanite is not worth much by itself. Sorry for the essay, but I figure this might help someone who is looking for a longer-term comparison. Looking back, I'd tell my fiance to just get a moissanite, but we didn't talk about any of this back then.

@@chempanda6388 I'm sad to say that I didn't know about moissanite until after I got engaged, and was looking to replicate the engagement ring with a stone that I didn't mind losing or damaging. At the time, my partner and I were both starting our own separate businesses, so spending 5 figures on a ring was a lot. But he ended up doing that and almost crashed his business. I barely even wear the lab diamond ring these days, and I pay around $300 every year on the insurance, which is why we considered selling it recently. I used to package orders, so I didn't want to damage a diamond ring and eventually got used to wearing the moissanite one. Since then, we've sold our businesses and are doing very well financially, but I keep buying moissanite because I like how unique they are and their quality. Natural diamonds are not unique or rare. Their supply is controlled and limited by De Beers, and there are ethical concerns as well. It's a whole scheme, and that's why I always preferred lab diamond and now moissanite. There are always new cuts, like the astro cut moissanite (by DovEggs). Recently, I've gotten into blue moissanite, which comes in many tints, but I just love the teal ones. There is no other stone like it!

People point out that a Moissanite stone has a Mohs hardness of 9.25 (I've seen some sources that rate them as high as a 9.5) making it the second hardest gemstone after a Diamond. What people might not know is Moissanite not only has a higher refractive index (more sparkle) than a Diamond, but it is also the most heat resistant of all the precious gemstones. Diamond, being made of pure (or almost pure) carbon is combustible (at about 1472 degrees Fahrenheit) in an oxygen atmosphere. Moissanite can resist combustion up to 2000 degrees! Meaning, your Diamond could be damaged or destroyed in a house fire, while the Moissanite will very likely come through unscathed.

I have had several large Certified Moissanite stones for over 20 years, high end gorgeous stones. Not one of them has discolored or turned cloudy in all these years. From my experience with them I do not agree with Bonnie on their durability. They are harder than natural diamonds and Jewelers can only tell the difference by doing hardness test plus Moissanite stamps the inside of stones. High quality Moissanite is not as expensive as lab grown diamonds and they are comparable to clear colorless diamonds. The performance sparkle is spectacular. I own both natural diamonds and Moissanite.....only difference is greater sparkle in Moissanite but who doesn't want sparkle right? If you want to wear an investment buy natural diamonds but if you are on a tight budget and want size and beauty, can't go wrong with Certified Moissanite or lab grown diamond. Moissanite high end stone mixes beautifully with other smaller diamonds in a setting if stones are G color. You will not be disappointed! Purchase them through Jeweler to insure they are of high quality and Certified.

The best advice here is that you should get a ring you and your partner both love and within your budget. I have a moissanite and we’ve been married 10+ years. It’s still shiny and beautiful and have not had any issues. I’m so happy with it. My band is also moissanite and I’m very happy. I have considered upgrading now that we are more financially secure but I decided not to bc I don’t need to. Like other say, your ring and whether it’s a diamond or not doesn’t determine the worth of your relationship. Moissanite is also beautiful. Choose whatever makes you happiest. In today’s economy, gotta go with what works best for you all. Marriage is a long term thing so don’t go in debt before you’ve even said your vows

Not to sound condescending, but this video is obviously biased due to the fact you are a diamond dealer. I have had THREE moissy's ... One that I never take off for over ten years...and they are in amazing condition. And I am tough on my jewelry. Did you know that a moissanite tests positive on standard diamond testers? They are damn near impossible to tell the difference and with the naked eye you cannot do it unless you are trained too. Moissy is coming up in the world and at this point it is driving down the cost of diamonds. There are so many good places to buy moissanite online...my suggestion is that if you buy moissanite, make sure the ring is real gold. Even if it is only 10k gold. When a moissanite is in sterling silver THAT is sometimes the dead giveaway. That is only IF you honestly care. I am proud of my moissanite and don't mind telling people at all how great it is. I bought my husband two identical looking rings, one with diamonds, one with moissy. He prefers the moissanite because it gives off more fire than the diamond. Also, I seen where someone said if the moissanite was not round it did not look as real. Again, not true. I have seen ALL kinds of beautiful cuts of moissanite. My biggest suggestion is that if you are going to buy moissanite, DO IT SOON. Because it is gaining popularity and the prices are being driven WAY up, which defeats the purpose of saving the money. Have a great day!

Absolutely! I just sold my 1.5 carat triple x natural diamond. I actually profited a few hundred dollars, but only because we bought the diamond at a great price from a local family jeweler 5 years ago. We are using the money to remodel! I also purchased a forever one hearts and arrows cut moissanite and have compared both in different lighting. There is no way anyone can tell the difference just by looking at them. The moissanite does not shoot off rainbow sparkles...I believe the new colorless forever one moissanite looks very similar to a high quality diamond. The advantage of wearing a moissanite over a diamond is that I don’t worry about knocking it or losing it. I have more peace of mind on a daily basis than I did wearing something that cost half the price of my car! People always need to consider the opportunity cost of spending so much money on one piece of jewelry regardless of whether they can easily afford a high quality natural diamond!

Hardness ≠ brittleness as a geologist I can tell you diamond is more brittle than moissanite. This means if you smash both with a hammer a diamond breaks easier. Hardness scale is JUST about scratching. 9.5 is incredibly hard and won't scratch unless you rub a diamond against it.

Diamond is also a polymorph that is unstable at earth's surface temperature and pressure. Diamonds natural and lab grown over generations will start to show wear and tear regardless of their harness because no one wants to talk about the fact that they have 4 cleavage planes where the molecules are likely to cleave and break apart. Moissanite has one plane of cleavage. Hardness will not matter if you hit that diamond in the right spot with enough force. I'd take the stability of the moissanite any day *shrugs*

A lot of comments are saying they prefer moissanite, but really having seen it in person, diamonds just look a lot better to me. Since I can't afford diamonds, I have a few white sapphires and a moissanite. But I ordered a 2 carat moissanite to get a larger size and ended up returning it. Now maybe since it was online I didn't get the best quality one, but it was very clear, white and sparkly. Still to me it looked cheap like I was trying to wear a flashy disco ball or rainbow on my finger. It didn't "wow" and look classy the same way I have seen large diamonds. Like it has no depth or something in comparison and it was also more see-through colored rather than white like a high quality diamond. So I do wear a one-carat moissanite which looks more like a diamond but I can't go bigger than that without looking fake imo.

I understand why you say you prefer diamond. It's a question of business. Why would you recommend something you don't sell? I just lost my wedding set to a garbage disposal, and my husband offered to replace it as my Christmas gift. I was looking at a London blue topaz stone (I've never cared for diamonds, tbh; the ring I replaced was an aquamarine) when a moissanite caught my eye. It looked way prettier to me than a diamond of any quality that my husband and I can afford. It was a custom job, took several weeks to be finished. I just got it yesterday, and I am so in love with it. It's way more sparkly than any diamond I've ever seen. And I prefer that, so it's better choice for me. The jeweler I bought from is amazing and also custom made a twisted wedding band with moissanite accents. As you pointed out, a good jeweler can make any choice of engagement stone look good. I would encourage you to consider selling moissanite stones. I know there's the idea that there's not as much of a markup for moissanite, but when you consider that people are paying thousands of dollars for a moissanite that was probably obtained through Alibaba for maybe $15, I'd say that's quite the markup. (I gladly paid $650 for my wedding set, having had the chance to do my own research and knowing this, because I was aware that I was paying for the jeweler's time more than anything. And I knew he was that good.)

Moissanite is amazing. I have a Moissanite bridal set and its beautiful and unique and sturdy and best of all, it cost a fraction of the same ring made with real diamonds. Also, funny enough, diamonds are essentially worthless. Seriously. If you were to buy a $1,200 diamond engagement ring and then turn around and try to sell it to another respectable jeweler or pawn shop, then you wouldnt get much for it at all. What's actually worth the money is the metal that the ring is made of and how many Karats it is. You could have a huge diamond on a plain sterling silver band and you would not get very much for that. The same goes for the other way around; if you had a beautiful Moissanite ring and the band was made of real gold then you could get a decent price for it. That's why ill never understand why some people get so hung up on whether they have a real diamond on their ring or how big the diamond it. At the end of the day, it's ultimately worthless and you end up seeming superfluous. *And yes, I do have experience and knowledge on this subject* 😅

Yes, Charles & Colvard is the original producer of moissanite. Their Forever One is colorless, (DEF) and they have the (GHI) that's near-colorless. Moissanite comes in different grades and colors too. I own a 1.5 ct. moissanite. When wearing it I never take it off except to clean it with a colorless liquid mild soap, warm water, using a soft baby toothbrush. It still looks the same as the day I received it over 12 years ago. And it is not the Forever One. It is mounted in 14k yellow gold. This ring can last forever if not damaged. Diamonds are brittle and can chip and crack if damaged. I feel that good quality moissanite, a stone in (its own category, not a diamond, not a ruby), would be a good diamond alternative for whatever the reason is. I own natural diamonds as well.

Whenever diamonds are resold, the jeweler re-cuts them to get rid of any small chips or scratches, making them slightly smaller than the original size. I had a 1 carat diamond that I sold. The two jewelers I talked to both said it would not be resold as 1 carat because of the fact that it would be re-cut, which brought down the resale value.

I have 4 pairs of lab grown diamonds and they are gorgeous and you really cant tell the diff. I honestly cant take my eyes off of them seriously. I would never buy mined diamonds if the lab diamonds are made of what the real ones are made of that did it for me right there. Regarding the resale value: the diamonds, even the mined ones, will loose at least 50% of the purchase price, because nobody will buy them from you at the retail price. You can buy a moissanite for less than 50% of the cost of the diamond, and invest the price difference in stock, and you will be farther ahead even if you simply throw away the moissanite later on.

But I’ve seen my friends 1.5 carat round moissanite ring and I am no jeweler but it looks ridiculously rainbow shiny. Not my personal taste. So I got lab grown diamond. I’ll probably try a fancy shape moissanite one day for an alternative ring to switch off. In terms of resell value I think moissanite does better especially if you know where to buy wholesale prices.

Moissanite is more durable. Too much hardness causes brittleness. I learned this as a knife designer. Diamond breaks and chips easier. Moissanite also has higher refractive index. Diamond is single refractive and moissanite is double refractive. Moissanite will always outshine diamond. It also has more fire than diamond

I have diamonds and I have had my moissy ring for almost 6 years. It is perfect. The key is in the fancy cuts and if you care to pass as a diamond, then buying a size that is realistic for the income you earn. Mine is an OEC and I’ve fooled the most loyal diamond wearers. I’ve compared mine to a family heirloom OEC diamond and the fire and scintillation was almost exact. No one is walking around comparing stones when you’re out and about and everyone has always assumed my ring is diamond. I tell ppl bc I don’t care to hide it but I love my rings I have two different rings I wear depending on my mood. It would have cost me 10x the cost of my two rings in a diamond that holds any value. I agree that the round brilliant cut moissy definitely looks different in the faceting and that is why I never liked them in that cut. Every stone can chip depending on how you treat your ring. But moissy is strong. I had a colleague chip her $50k diamond. I think the best advice to people is shop around find jewellers that carry all stones so you have options and find the styles that you love in whatever stone makes you happy!

About the size, personally I am not a fan of big stones because it is impractical, awkward and uncomfortable to wear everyday. Imo big moissanite stones look cheap and people buy big stones just because they can and think that bigger better. I think moissanite can make a great travel ring or when you want to try a fancy shaped Diamond. I wear my Tiffany and Co. RB Solitaire as my daily driver but I just ordered an emerald cut moissanite for when I’m in the mood to change it up. Since it’s just for funsies I don’t mind the rainbow or lower hardness. I also have a moissanite travel ring that looks similar my authentic Tiffany and co set. So if I lose it in the ocean of get robbed, it’s not a big deal. No it means she sells diamonds. Most Jewelers don't have Moissanite sitting in their inventory. My Jeweler has ordered Moissanite for customers who request them. They do not try to talk them out of it or upsell to lesser quality diamonds just to move their diamonds. They speak well of Moissanite and compliment on the beauty of them. The Hearts Forever Moissanite is beautiful and does not look plastic or fake, never cloudy. My family member recently upgraded her wedding set and put in a 2ct high end Moissanite in center stone. Jeweler friend who saw it for first time thought it was real diamond. It is gorgeous next to all the other diamonds in her setting. Set with 2ct DEF diamond would have run about $50,000+ vs $13,000 she paid for the total setting with high quality 2ct Moissanite. It's personal preference and budget. No need to go into hock for a ring when there are gorgeous stones as alternative. No need to have to buy CZ when there are other affordable stone options available that are durable.

I've even taken it to get it professionally cleaned and they can't get it off either. From everything I've read, apparently no one really know why this happens. Some blame it on cleaners or hand soaps and lotions. Whatever the case is, my ring doesnt sparkle like it used to and it's just ruined. I'm heart broken because it does have sentimental value. We're now shopping for lab diamond. I will be replacing it. Lesson learned, sadly.

I dare you to retype a mois with a laser, they explode.i know that I am posting 3 years since this vid came out, so the prices of lab have dropped hard. Now labs are getting par with mois pice wise , there is no resale value with mois. I work with several pawn brokers, they only give gold value nothing for the stone. I do my best to never work with moissanite. I met with Covard when they first introduced the stones we were promised they would never be sold on the secondary market ,B.S. in the first year I had vintage TJC 'sales' pieces with mois replacement center stones . they were used to defraud jewelers and pawnbrokers not to mention the public. I admit I have a very bitter taste towards stones that hurt our industry.
