In 1603 the shogunate initiated an isolationist policy that sought to root out all foreign religious influence that was gaining ground with the commonfolk. Such a religion was Moistism, and in order to prove their allgience to the shogunate, Moistists were forced to walk on the image of the Moist prophet himself, or destroy his Moist idols. The Moist one himself was forced to flee the country for fear of his execution by the shogunate. And that's why Charlie can't go to Japan.

Charlie’s probably not going to see this but I’d highly recommend the book SOAR by Capt. Tom Bunn. I have panic attacks occasionally and I absolutely DREADED the thought of getting on a plane. However, the lessons from this book allowed me to get very comfortable on a 15 hour overseas flight just last month. It didn’t eliminate the anxiety entirely, but it helped me use rationale to approach this fear directly. I now look forward to getting on planes because of the lessons I’ve learned 🙂

I looked it up, the most direct route I could find is apparently some cargo ships have rooms that people can rent for like $170 a day, and the most direct route from the USA to Japan is starting in Norfolk, VA, then going down to the Panama Canal (stopping at a couple ports along the way to take on and offload cargo), then to Japan, for a total of 30 or so days to get to Japan. And that's just one way. And cargo ships don't have anywhere near the kinds of amenities that the typical cruise liners have. Though it could be funny if he does take it, and he gets there and decides he'd rather face his fear or flying on his way back for 12 hours than take another month-long cruise back to the USA. Or it could be a really wholesome "Friends we made along the way" kinda thing.

I think Charlie really should do a small flight somewhere. I went on my first flight at the age of 29, basically the same fear and relative location to him too. I took a flight up to Georgia and drove back down in order to help my SO clear out her storage unit. I was terrified of the flight, but during it, it wasn't bad at all. And I found myself on the drive back wishing we could've just flown back. I've flown 4 more times since, back and forth from Pennsylvania for work, and didn't have a bad experience at all. Really want to try a longer flight now as all of those happened literally right before Covid (March of 2020 for the PA flights). Edit: Wrote this out before he mentioned he has flown somewhere recently. Not sure then x.x

@@ellesper Thanks. When I hit 180 and start the strength portion of my... body-unfucking project? I plan to make a video going over exactly how easy it is to lose weight. It really isn't hard. Hell, I did it and I can't drive... or breathe... or work. Eat less, eat better, exercise more. Ramen is better than nuggies. Saltines are better than ramen. Half a sleeve is better than a full sleeve (I NEED SALT TO LIIIVE!) I started walking a block (2 miles) a day. I rested often but I never stopped until I finished the lap. When winter hit, I was walking 6 laps a day. Now, I walk 2-4 laps a day but I walk them as fast as I can. I have to rest again but it's not so bad and it saves a lot of time. It's really that easy. You just need the motivation to do it every single god damned day. My motivation is hate. I HATE this body and I HATE that doctors lied to me about how weak it is. I HATE that I could have been thin in my 20s instead of near my 40s. My rage is an unending magma vein of energy. Other people probably have healthier motivations than mine but hey, whatever works right?

Charlie could take a cruise to Japan. Though, it would be time consuming. But it would be a cool adventure on the way to Japan. He would just have to be on the look out for a return cruise that matches his schedule as trans-oceanic cruises are not very frequent. Cruise lines do these cruises when they want to move their ships to a different market. He would also have to drive to the west coast. Though, if he couldn't get a cruise ship both ways, then at least he'd only have to fly one direction. I'd fly to Japan just so the thought of flying home isn't on my mind the entire trip. On the other hand if he wanted to go to Europe, the Queen Mary II is the last ocean liner that does regular trips across the Atlantic Ocean.

If I learn Japanese I think Kanji I would pick up the most quick out the 3 different ones. That primarily because I took chinese for 3-4 years. However it’s been a few years so I forgot. It looks easier to write though. I can speak Chinese at home but I wouldn’t I know how to read

It actually made me feel good to hear someone like Charlie also suffers from hypochondria. It is debilitating when your mind convinces itself that there is something seriously wrong with your body. Your mind can make you feel like you are having a heart attack, or feel like your appendix is bursting, just from the overwhelming fear and worry that you actually are having a heart attack or ruptured spleen. You feel real, legitimate pains. The worst part is many doctors will figuratively roll their eyes at you when you come in to get those symptoms checked out. And once you are labeled a hypochondriac, you may find yourself fighting with doctors in the event you do have an actual physical disease. If you suffer from hypochondria, the best thing I've seen was a doctor say "Our bodies are noisy. When you "hear" the noises, it's just a sign that your body is alive and functioning." Some more good advice is that rather than being upset or more anxious when all the test results come back negative, try and look at it from the perspective that they are ruling out the worst of the worst, so if there is actually something wrong with you, it's still most likely not going to be a serious illness like cancer.

I am an aviation geek with fear of heights - very stupid I know. I also have fear of flying, which I completely overcame after I got serious into Flight Simming (around 2007-2008). I am very alright with watching Top Gun or Air Crash Investigation in-flight. Previously, a slight change in engine noise would cause me to sweat profusely and grab the armrest tightly. Knowing what happened, and how the giant flying thing is being operated really helps. It is just like driving the racing car or being a passenger - different level of terrifying experience.

I can't fly because I understand physics and there's no way any airplanes should be able to fly. They just do but I know they can't so any plane I was on would crash from my disbelief. I'm protecting others I'm a friggin hero.

As a person who has a fear of flying, my response to all those people citing statistics about how driving is more dangerous than flying is - "what are my odds of survival if I get in a plane crash compared to a car crash?" I know of many people who survived a car accident, but pretty sure if my plane falls out of the sky at 30,000+ feet, I have a 0% chance of survival.
