The war and the doctors background is a slow reveal. It’s worth not spoilering yourself because over the course of the first few seasons it will be revealed, a bit at a time. Rose is there to be “us” and learn about things as she experiences them. The doctor looks human but there are flashes when you realize how alien and how powerful he is. It’s worth experiencing the slow reveal. I love Cassandra as a villain. She just kept having plastic surgery to “improve” herself until she looked less human than the aliens.
@matthewteague62310 ай бұрын
I can only imagine finding yourself cast in such an iconic role, for the revival of such a beloved show, after it had been off the air for so long. That is a LOT of pressure Christopher Eccleston must have felt. Even if he was simultaneously up for and enjoyed the challenge, the pressure has to still be there.

So remember last episode when you said there were multiple Doctors and this was the first? Actually the First Doctor was played by William Hartnell in the 1960s, and Christopher Eccleston is the Ninth. That's why he was looking at himself in the mirror in episode 1, because he changed. It's a mechanic that's used to keep the show going through different actors playing the role - as a newcomer you'll find out more later in Series 1, but that there in episode 1 is a little hint for those who were already familiar with the show.
@katie888110 ай бұрын
The Time Lords actually appeared sporadically through classic who and the doctor even went to his home planet a number of times. Talk about a shock for returning fans when the reveal hits that everything and everyone has been destroyed. I too wondered about not saying “goodbye” after phone calls, so I searched for reasons why, and found that the episodes have to be a specific length of time (they won’t be accepted if they go over that time) to get reviewed before they start trimming out “unnecessary” parts, so even though it would be more “realistic” to say that before hanging up, they’d rather leave that part out so they don’t have to cut a joke they like or an emotional scene.
@HuntingViolets10 ай бұрын
Most people in TV shows don't say goodbye before they hang up (for reasons mentioned, more or less, and wanting not to end with something anticlimactic sometimes), which is kind of annoying, really. If they cut to another scene, it's okay, obviously. A lot of shows on streaming just go as long as they need to per episode, though, so it's a different world now (sometimes).

The dialogue in this one episode in particular compared to literally every other episode is wild. Asking if rose is a prostitute, the Micheal Jackson joke, calling Cassandra a bitch. Not that I have a problem with it, it actually somehow all works alongside the normal tone of the show. Rose should of called out and swore at more villains apparently.
@HuntingViolets10 ай бұрын
The Michael Jackson joke was about his multiple plastic surgeries (maybe you realize that but I wasn't sure) to the point where he became unrecognizable, as does Cassandra. Rose's telling the Doctor and Jabe to go and pollinate was funny too.

For those of us who remembered Classic Who, this storyline brought all the favorites, the Time Lord exploring space and time in his TARDIS with a companion, his sonic screw driver and his psychic paper, but then, also the intriguing story about him being the last Time Lord and his planet not existing any more. This is the first season of the restarted Dr Who, but it is actually season 27, since this isn't a reboot, so much as a continuation after a 16 year break. This is actually the 9th doctor. The War was what "happened" between the end of season 26 and the start of this season. It was a way to bring the show back without rebooting it - they sort of filled in the missing time with a war we didn't see and that way the timeline for the Doctor can be continuous from the first episode in 1963. They do have a lot of call backs to the original series to help stitch it all together. As someone who started watching when it first aired in Canada, 14 months after it aired in England, it is kind of interesting spotting the call backs, but for those who started with the New-Who, you don't need to know about that to enjoy the show.

This was my introduction to Doctor Who when it aired on CBC, because I missed the first one. (Canadian stations didn't sell it very well.) When it comes to villains, Cassandra was a bit too silly for my taste, so I didn't know if my interest would sustain if the series' villains were mostly like that. Thankfully they weren't. The plotting of the episode is much better in hindsight. While it sets pieces in motion for Rose's arc over the rest of the season, it also contrasts her personality traits and how they work both for and against her in a very different situation compared to the previous episode. Michael Jackson was still alive, but he was in no condition to be worrying about any people throwing shade at him. Marc Almond & David Ball (a.k.a. Soft Cell, the duo who covered "Tainted Love" in the 80s) went through their 2nd breakup the year this episode aired.

Without spoilering anything: The show will reveal most of the relevant answers from the classic series. What are Time Lords? Why are there different actors, etc. I hope those aren't spoiled for you. In the original series, these answers were revealed/made-up over the show's 26 series run! The Doctor was assumed to be human for quite a while, and Time Lords weren't discussed until the end of the sixth series! Fun fact, the Nestene Consciousness (from Rose) showed up in the seventh series. The Time War was mostly new even to longtime fans. There were literally dozens and dozens of (mostly excellent) novels released between the two series, and some of them hinted at a coming Time War, or a long-ago Time War, or a Time War that was stopped from even happening by using time travel, etc. But fans didn't really know anything more about the Time War than you do, and the reboot used it as a way to keep things fresh. Even if they got things "wrong," history had already been changed by the Time War!

Something I meant to touch on last time was you feeling like episode 1 was too early for the end of the world. Doctor Who exists on a completely different scale of threat to just about any other show in existence. Saving the world in a random episode is pretty normal for The Doctor. He matches wits with gods and outfoxes entities from beyond the universe. He's a force so ancient and so compassionate that everything evil in the universe simply does not know how to deal with him. What's waiting out there is so much bigger and so much scarier and so much better than could possibly be imagined from here. I'm being vague to avoid spoilers, but yeah what's going on in this setting is BIG. No matter how big you're imagining, double it and add an extra suitcase full of big.

It is so nice to see this show through fresh eyes. [Edit] I wrote a long, rambling post, but deleted it, as it contained far too many spoilers, and I did not want to ruin things for you. Suffice to say, I am living vicariously watching you watching the show for, effectively, the first time, and I am loving it. I hope it maintains your interest, and you end up watching the whole thing, whether you choose to make videos about the episodes, or not. I consider Doctor Who to be one of the last, true “family” shows - a show where the entire family, from bubs to adults, can watch the show, and enjoy it, without bits of it needed to be censored, or explained, to anyone watching (provided you pay attention, of course… :) ). Further, it is a great concept for a show. Although (and I will drop one minor spoiler here), for someone who can go anywhere in time and space, he does seem to spend an awful lot of time in England - London, specifically (which is even funnier, considering the show is filmed in Wales… ). Cheers,

If I could make one suggestion since you're not watching the classic series, it might be helpful to familiarize yourself with a couple of things from the original show that may come up ... just for context/callbacks and just what/who they are without anything spoilery. In particular, some of the classic villains/alien races; the Brigadier and UNIT; some of the more popular previous companions prior to Rose (particularly Susan, Jamie, Sarah Jane, Jo Grant, Nyssa & Tegan, Mel and Ace); and the bare minimum of what the doctor's first 8 faces looked like and each one's idiosyncrasy/affectation (flute, car, scarf, celery, etc.). There's definitely a way to look into that without getting spoiled.

But it's very likely over that Billion years that Humans would survive and spread into the surrounding galaxy and interact with other alien beings and in fact evolve into different species etc and that some of them MIGHT want to come see the "END" of the world and that at least ONE of them might be a very strange looking human that had funny ideas about history and the past that would not seem entirely accurate to us if we were able to see and understand what they were referencing (We wouldn't) But interesting concept to show on screen from WAY into the future.

you are way too young to be confused by a trans trampoline 👀

Cassandra was obviously misinformed about some things, calling herself a boy and thinking a jukebox was an iPod.
@AhsimNreiziev10 ай бұрын
Nope. The only reason that Cassandra was confused about the jukebox/iPod thing was because the word "jukebox" had been lost to time. The words "man", "woman", "boy" and "girl" were still around and fully in use as they originally were. So there would be no reason for Cassandra to be confused about the words there. No. Rather, Cassandra truly was a little boy (or thought she was, anyway), but grew up to be a woman. These things, and these people, exist. We call this process *_transitioning_* and the people who go through said transitioning process we call *_transgender_* . You might have heard of these terms.

@AhsimNreiziev I realize your point about Cassandra's boy/girl reference, but as for the jukebox/iPad thing, I wonder if the term iPod would be just as obsolete that far into the future. Looking at it that way, on a cosmic scale, the two (jukeboxes and iPods) were not far apart.

thinking a jukebox was an iPod, comic effect perhaps, just like the Beatles were said to be a classical music group in 60s D W.

@@icoborg Have you ever heard of the term "WAFO"? Also....... WHY would transgender people just *_disappear_* in a few billion years?

The Ninth Doctor is such an intriguing version of the character. He's fun, he's sweet, but he also has an edge to him that's incredibly visible. Christopher Eccleston is a treasure in the role. You're so in for a 'fantastic' ride.

Chris Eccleston is such a charmster. Why was he treated so poorly?

@@ninjabluefyre3815 honestly I don't think the reasons for the friction between him and the higher up folks at the network will ever be made public. He outright hates all the producers guts.
