This drama gives a very clear example of the disaster that plural marriage was. Women living together, vying for one man’s time and attention, being jealous, and plotting and scheming. Poor children caught in the middle, brought into the world as pawns for power and position, experiencing no love, and growing up to fight to the death with their siblings for power. In this drama, the marquise makes the statement that he never loved or wanted all these concubines and it cures tragedy after tragedy. God’s original plan for marriage given in the Bible was one man and one woman. It only took one generation for humans to corrupt that plan. We see multiple wives for one man all the way through the Old Testament. When Jesus came He set the record straight, thank goodness.
