These came out great! Pro tip for CMON minis (and honestly, most PVC board game minis): stick the minis in the freezer overnight. In the morning you can pop them out of the base, no blades needed. The glue they use become very brittle when that cold but the plastic couldn't care less, so you get nice clean breaks between the post/under foot and the base. Also a great way to fix any badly factory assembled ones.

Hi Scot. I have recently discovered this hobby and I have always thought that the basing of the miniatures really sets them off! I have tried similar things, but yours have given me a new perspective. Fantastic work. Thank you, keep up the fantastic work. I love your enthusiasm and presenting technique. You always have an excellent enthusiasm for the hobby. A joy to watch. Can't wait to see the next one. Kind regards Ian

hey Scott, long time watcher. Great tutorial, as someone who is no stranger to molding/casting, it was very informative. The only thing I would say is that you were using polyurethane resin, which while it has no apparent odour, can be very toxic in enclosed spaces. Just an FYI. Keep up the good work, love your vids.

When I made totallynotgamesworkshop molds, I made the box from Lego bricks, they didn't stick to the silicone and could be pulled apart very easily. I didn't even need to add any further sealing because the bricks lock together so well.

This video is all about that base. Love that you admitted to not having any hot glue, that's both surprising and brave!

I've been doing something similar but just by 3d printing instead of molding. Generally I like use the 3d printed bases that already have some texture and maybe unever ground and bits on them as just a base and then work them up from there myself but sometimes STL files are accompanied by awesome bases with a lot of verticality and in those cases I'll just print the base and use it as it is. Either way it's almost always better to start with a ''canvas'' that's not completely blank and work it up from there. If there's one thing that I find unappealing it's flat bases with just some crackle paint and a tuft on them.
@trollbite.miniatures2 жыл бұрын
they came out very good! You could have saved some silicone by putting them a lot closer together and making the box smaller. Lego makes for easy boxes. Baby powder works as mold release.
@dougsundseth69042 жыл бұрын
Nice result. A couple of thoughts: Lego blocks work great for making mold boxes. You can get a size that works quite well, and you can build a second mold half easily if you need one. Also, for small pieces like these, I'd consider using UV-set resin rather than epoxy resin and then just curing with a UV flashlight.
@Excaliber1582 жыл бұрын
Is that basically 3d printer resin?
@dougsundseth69042 жыл бұрын
@@Excaliber158 That was my thought, mostly because the price per volume is much better than the UV-set resin that is sold as an adhesive.
@Karlmakesstuff2 жыл бұрын
Excellent casts! Great tip about the pegs, will check the rum and bones to see if they work the same :) would save a basing headache. One suggestion about pouring - using the largest paper cup you can find lets you mix more easily, and you can pinch the lip to get a more controlled pour. The last bit doesn't make much difference for an open cast mold, but it helps a lot when you start to make more complex ones 😁

Very fine work! If you want to add a mould release and colour your casting in one step, you can spray the inside of the mould with rattlecan spray paint before you pour the resin. The resin will bond with the paint. May be handy in some situations. Cheers!

Use mold release. ESPECIALLY if you're doing a two part mold. I was half way down this process myself, and I forgot mold release on a simple two part mold, and it ruined the mold and with it killed any interest I had in that part of the hobby. Also just casting the part that you're going to attach to the bases is super clever. I may steal that at some point.

I've seen so many hobbyists cast things, but I think this is that one extra use that will finally get me to make some molds. I recently this year caved and started to get into Warhammer, so of course I bought a bunch of the vampire stuff, because look at it. I have no idea how to play yet, I just thought they would be the most fun to put together, paint, and see assembled. With so many models to do, this honestly is probably the best option for basing them all if I want the bases to have any details. Thanks for the push.

I watched a video a while back and cannot remember who made it, but the painter had used a product I believe it was from AK for weathering on a blue ultramarine. After sloshing on this product it was left to sit a while and then removed with white mineral spirits and a makeup sponge stick. Can you point me in the right direction of the video if you know of it as I would like to use this technique and product.
