Mold Making Tutorial: How to Make Your Own Custom Candle Mold

From the largest international candle making conglomerates to home hobbyists that enjoy making candles for family and friends, Smooth-On urethane and silicone mold rubbers are used to make molds for casting wax. You can reference this 'step-by-step' video on how to make a simple candle.
Step 1. Construct a base for the mold. This can be wood, plastic, or foil as shown here
Step 2. Attach model to base. In this case, the model is a wooden dowel.
Step 3. Seal the model if necessary. Porous models like wood need to be sealed.
Step 4. Set up a container for the mold rubber. Plastic containers work well for this. Seal all seams to keep liquid rubber from escaping.
Step 5. Dispense silicone rubber as per the manufacturer's instructions. OOMOO™ silicone is dispensed 1:1 by volume.
Step 6. Mix silicone using the 'Double Mix and Pour Technique'. No color streaks indicates material is well mixed.
Step 7. Pour mixed rubber over model. Pour in the lowest part of the mold container, allowing rubber to flow 1/2 inch over the model.
Step 8. After rubber cures for 6 hours, demold the rubber mold by removing the plastic mold box.
Step 9. Demold the model, leaving a negative mold cavity. Trim any excess rubber from the base of the mold.
Step 10. Prepare the wax by melting in a double boiler. Wear an oven mitt to pretoect from high heat.
Step 11. Perpare the wick by placing in the mold.
Step 12. Pour wax into mold and allow to cool around the wick.
Step 13. Trim the wick.
Step 14. Pour more wax onto the top of the candle if necessary to create a level surface.
Step 15. Allo wax to cool for 2 hours
Step 16. Demold the candle and enjoy!

It is a smashing one off product for learning how to make candles for fund or profit minus the hard work. Yes Charlotte, our Mold Star silicone would be a good silicone for this application as long as the material you used to sculpt the pieces does not have sulfur in it.

@Skitz15kOfficial Using was originals can be tricky, as some waxes have fragrances or ingredients whih may cause the rubber to not cure properly. Sonite Wax is only necessary when you have a porous original.

Sure it's possible. Mold Max 30 differs from OOMOO 30 in a few important ways. For one, it's mixed 10:1 by weight so an accurate gram scale is required. For another, its high viscosity means that vacuum degassing is highly recommended. However, Mold Max 30 has a higher tear strength and longer library life than OOMOO 30. If you are having trouble finding OOMOO 30, I can recommend looking for your nearest full-line distributor on our website.

The mold for the pyramid has a small hole in the bottom which the wick is placed in before pouring, the wax is poured into the large end.

You can use a carton, I would recommend sealing the carton with our Superseal sealing agent.

I would rather poke a hole through the bottom of the mold and put the wick through for a cleaner looking top for the candle. What would best to seal the hole? And how would you suggest making a clean hold? Thank you Candle Cocoon

Okay smooth on, hopefully my silicone mixture(not mixed yet) is still good, I've sear he'd high and low on information to make a mold with your silicone mixture, and didn't really have much luck.... I am wanting to create a mold for a candle, but I need to create the shape first, what material can I use to carve and shape that won't mess up the mold process, as I can't really afford trial and error at the moment.

How is the wick set in the pyramid-shaped one at the end... would you have to cut the mold? I'm confused about how to do this for objects that are narrower at the top, does the rubber stretch that far?

The same technique would be applicable. You want to be careful making a mold of an existing candle, as sometimes fragrances or other additives can affect the mold rubber. A small-scale test would be prudent.

Hello, I am a dollmaker - I repair and restore antique dolls. Right now I am working on my Mother's Wax Doll that is missing a leg and an arm. Yes, as long as the candle does not inhibit the silicone mold rubber.

You use what's called "mold seal". You can buy it from candle supply stores.

Absolutely! Use a non sulfur clay like Sculptex or Chavant NSP for your original sculpture.

If I were sculpting a custom shape that would be difficult to remove in one go, should I make a two part mould like in the 'How to make a 2 piece silicone rubber mould'? Also what would the difference between casting a mould for wax and casting one for resin? I want to make candles but I was looking at the Mold Star 15. Thank you!

Mold Star 15 works great for wax or resin. Complex shapes can benefit from a multi-piece mold, though the moldmaking process is more complicated, ease of releasing delicate wax without breaking can be improved.
