Moldy Firewood on the bottom of the pile! -

MOLD ALERT! We are stacking the piles of cherry in the wood yard and find some mold and wet wood at the bottom of the piles in some spots. Kens son Bo is here to help today!

what we do here is bunches of prunings. under the loose blocks then the moisture does not penetrate and when you start stacking you throw the bunches of prunings through the shredder to make the paths less wet and thus to raise and level them

Most wood will mold but box elder molds and rots pretty fast if it is wet all the time.

Hi Chris, Wood Piles are growing nicely. Glad that moldy stuff will be ok to burn later, would have been sad if it was not able to be burned for some odd reason. I Love the location near the airport, I get distracted easily by planes, been around them all my life. I actually went to college for mechanics on planes and worked on them for a number of years until daughter was born. Went and got a 'better paying' job that didn't turn out so well, but alas I still go to EAA every year. Keep videos coming, and we will keep watching them, Later!!!

Have two cords or so left of the log pile you saw in my woodyard left to buck, and that includes the stringers. Getting into better shape every weekend. Am really getting to like the method of bucking it all, splitting it all, then split it all like you do. Am thinking am going to do it all that way for efficiency like you said. All summer I've been having to split right away to restock. But had a week of nearly no sales so that heloed me get ahead on the cutting. Now to get going for the day and get cutting!

What is the moisture content of this cherry? Have you ever charted the moisture from first split to when you sell it

No I have not but if I was to guess the stuff not on the ground is in the mid 20% range. Cherry dries pretty fast so this wood will be ready to burn and sell by October - November.

Ash, soft maple, aspen, cherry all dry very fast if split small and if it is in the sun and wind all the time.

Yes, if it is wet, in the shade and especially if it is on the ground. That is why I like to stack the wood in the open and on pallets.

I keep most of it down to about 2" but a lot of the wood I have I buy from loggers so the smallest I get is about 4".
