Well, you could also use a shutter on the effusion cell. Though, now I am curious what's the difference between a sputter gun and an effusion cell?

So effusion cells are simple heating cells. They have a crucible which holds the material to be deposited and a coil which heats it up to temperatures at which the said material starts evaporating and depositing on the substrate. Sputter guns are slightly more complex as they basically create a plasma and bombard the material that you want to deposit with ions. This leads to the material "sputtering" out of the material and on to the substrate and you end up with a thin film

Absolutely! You can have multiple effusion cells with different metals and depending on the stoichiometry of the alloy you want, you can alter the temperature/shutter open-close time to obtain a range of different intermetallic alloys.

Turbo pumps only start functioning at high vacuum conditions (1x10^-3 Torr), so you need another pump to pump it down from atmospheric pressure to some relatively decent vacuum. After this, the turbo kicks in and brings the whole system to ultra high vacuum
