Spent the day at The Queen Street Mill and Textile Museum on 31st July 2014. There is a number of demonstrations throughout the day of the machinery used by the mill workers in the Weaving Shed and Warehouse and when you are told of the conditions they worked in, you soon realise that the life of a mill worker was not an easy one.
The Engine House is the home of the horizontal tandem engine built by William Roberts Co. in 1894, and is really impressive when you watch it being operated.
Its incredible to watch one loom being operated, and even more incredible when you think these ladies operated up to six looms at a time.
Friendly Staff are always ready to answer any questions you might have. If you have an interest in the history of the Mills or how we used to live and work, a visit to The Queen Street Mill Textile Museum is highly recommended, and very enjoyable.
If you pay a visit you will see that the demonstrations and commentary are far more informative and detailed than shown in this edited video.
On the day of my visit the Queen Street Mill was short staffed. Many thanks to Graeme for all the extra effort you put in on the demonstrations and for all the information.

I have the memory of the smell of the place from a school trip. Wonderful place that even then filled me with imagination

Never thought my passion for sewing would take me to a place like this, a place once taken for granted in the history books now something I really appreciate seeing! Thank you soo much for sharing!

Glad you enjoyed your visit there Tommy, it's an interesting place for sure. I always remember Fred Dibnah visiting there, and interviewing and elderly Spinster, who said she thought she would never learn how to run the machines because she was 'Gormless' ! :-)

Excellent video. I remember watching Adam Hart Davis in his 'What the Victorians Did For Us?' series exploring this mill in an episode from when I was quite young. I was always fascinated and have wanted to visit ever since. Lovely to see a video exploring the site - certainly the next best thing. The sound must have deafening with all the looms operating. Certainly a contrast to tranquil nature of the outside scenes in your last shots. Thanks for sharing - Hayden.

Excellent video, good steady shots and very sharp. I would be interested to know which programme you use for editing and preparing for KZbin upload. I'm a bit worried about the time of your visit as it is at this moment the 17th August 2014, your visit was on the 31st August 2014. How did you manage that? However, a great video, I really enjoyed watching it. I am planning to make a visit on Saturday the 23rd August, I hope that everything is working. Well done.

It would now be impossible to imagine the noise of all the looms working together. No ear protection then.
