Just remember, when you do, that in real life she was only fined $1000 (not $200K) and for sure she was working for the Russian mob from the outset. They were/are deeply embedded all over LA, including in the entertainment industry. This "fascinating woman" was just a plain old gangster who was gathering all sorts of dirt ("kompromat") on some very important wealthy Americans -- including, by her own admission here, Politicians. All of them now in hock to the Russian mob. Jessica Chastain is a fine actress and does justice to a pretty average script that completely sanitizes the narrative. She "never slept with anyone"? Not credible. Very little truth to her version of her story. The parts with the psycho-shrink Dad are particularly nauseating and not to be believed.
@dianarosalindland15667 жыл бұрын
+Maria Ashot But if she was gathering kompromat then why not use it when she needed it? I'm not being argumentative, btw, that just doesn't add up to me. Explain?
@mariaashot56487 жыл бұрын
That's a very good and reasonable question, Diana Trimble. Answer: You don't know that she did not actually use it. Only the federal investigators know. There could have been a secret deal, to give her deniability, because of course she would be a dead woman walking to the Russian mob (and everyone else she had crossed) if she gave evidence against them. I would like to remind you that the script is "based" on events: it is not a documentary and it cannot be treated as "the whole story." Neither is her book, necessarily, the whole story. Given the subject matter & the people who figured most prominently in it, of course it is a sanitized version of events! Reduced to a feature film-length thriller. The real story played out over years, and entangled some of Hollywood's brightest lights. Were they all just poker addicts? Or were some of them actually being used as bait? It is a fact -- officially published by Kremlin-sponsored media -- that since Putin came to power More Than One Trillion US Dollars' Worth of currency denominations (in all varieties of currency, e.g. Swiss francs as well as Canadian dollars, etc.) have been smuggled out of Russian bank accounts and deposited in foreign banks, in accounts controlled by people who are either actual -- current -- Russian passport-holders, or their family members, or persons born in the USSR who were formerly its citizens and now hold every other kind of passport (including Brazilian, Israeli, Australian, etc.). That is the definition of "international organized crime." It is the reality we are dealing with today, and now they are (as we can see) actively seeking to control entire countries by controlling a head of state -- for example, Maduro of Venezuela. Not to mention DJT etc. Now, in most banks on earth, you can't simply walk in and say: "Here, I have 10 million Canadian dollars in cash, and a Russian (or French, let's say) passport: I want to open an account." Laws require explaining where the money was obtained. "Stolen from the accounts of the Russian Navy" is not an acceptable answer... That's where money laundering services come into play. There have been wonderful, detailed articles about this recently, such as www.theguardian.com/world/2017/mar/20/british-banks-handled-vast-sums-of-laundered-russian-money for example, or the big exposés that featured in US publications, such as the New Republic newrepublic.com/article/143586/trumps-russian-laundromat-trump-tower-luxury-high-rises-dirty-money-international-crime-syndicate. Paul Manafort's pizza bill could hardly process A Trillion Dollars! So Trump got some action, via property sales -- and so did Molly Bloom (Bloom or Blum is actually a fairly common name in Russian society, goes back a long way). Why did she get such a light sentence? In actual fact, she was fined $1000.00, not $200K. Look it up. The feds gave her deniability -- but of course they had her hard drives in exchange. Or perhaps they did not even need them, given that the NSA is twice as efficient as any Kremlin-run secret police operation, at keeping track of the shenanigans, words, actions, sex lives, texts, etc. of anybody they choose to pay attention to. Look at what we found out in just this past week: FBI agents don't have private communications, even. Trump and his porn stars are not shielded from the public glare. And so why would anyone for a minute believe, on the basis of Aaron Sorkin's screenplay or Jessica Chastain's excellent acting, that Molly Bloom did not hand over everything she had or knew to the feds? What would you have done in her place? Exactly that -- ideally, with a negotiated cover story providing a small smidgeon of deniability, that won't hold up in the mind of anyone with half a brain. That's what happens when you dance with mobsters...
@dianarosalindland15667 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that detailed reply. Yes, I know about some of which you speak, having done a bunch of research into the Russian economy and society after the USSR for a guy in the UK who wanted to write a book about the aviation industry (actually I think he was really just in bed with some oligarchs to do bogus hotel development in Turkey - speaking of money laundering - I saw one of them on the news a few months after I quit working for the guy, who was a total jerk - the book thing was some kind of a front). I will follow those links and do the research as you suggested. I don't like to have opinions that aren't well-informed. Bottom line, I liked the movie, as entertainment - but also having worked in Hollywood, in the late 1990s, I have zero illusions about truthful reportage in movies billed as "based on real events". For example, I thought it was an ingratiating move to cast a black actor in the role of Bloom's lawyer, since he wasn't in real life. This is clearly to fob off the critics of too much whiteness in Hollywood, while also bagging a bit more black audience percentage share, not alienate the Oscars, while simultaneously making Molly even groovier somehow. So yeah, I'm sure there is a whole lotta bullshit in both flick and book. I do think though that it should be a matter of public record whether or not she actually turned over the hard drives - unless you're saying that we also can't believe what the Feds say happened in a deal. What about the Freedom of Information Act? I certainly do agree that it is somewhat hard to fathom how a smart chick that essentially snatched the high-stakes game out under from her boss would simultaneously be naive enough to not consider ANY high stakes player with a Russian name as connected to the mob. I mean, come the fuck on. The country is literally run by the Mafia/ex-KGB so pretty much anybody with money is dirty, unless they're a frikkin classical musician or something.
@mariaashot56487 жыл бұрын
Undeniably, the film is well-made, superbly acted, incisively written (I know one of the people who writes for Sorkin; no, he is not always the person who actually comes up with all the script content attributed to him -- and of course, you know Hollywood...). It is interesting and timely given what we are currently sorting out. I read the info on the amount of the fine right on the Wikipedia page. I am not claiming to know what kind of a deal she may have been given -- I am merely making an educated guess based on what I know about her social set, the type of person she is and the type of family she comes from: bright, competitive, concerned about winning -- coming out on top -- and also motivated to survive and keep on generating income. She herself admits she is "greedy" -- the greed got the better of her, she started taking drugs to stay awake so she could keep raking it in... And of course she had to know the kind of people she was doing favors to. LA is crawling with Russian mafia as well as every other kind. There's some clean money (or was, in the past): Jobs & Wozniak made their billions the healthy way. But as soon as things took off, as we now know from following the news, some shady Russian kleptocrats glommed on wherever they could (Yuri Milner comes to mind). Putin has even compromised cello players (Panama Papers, his pal the 'billionaire cellist' Roldugin, who is certainly no Yo-Yo Ma in the talent department...). I think MollyB got seduced early on by the money, did not think too hard about who was "paying the tips," and then got in way in over head until the day the whole racket came crashing down, as of course it inevitably would. She could have stuck with the law school plan, or even become a sports medic for some team. But she wanted the high life, and, well, she's lucky she didn't have to do hard time. But I just don't buy for a minute the argument that they allowed her to walk off with a 1 grand fine without handing over all the hard drives. That's just fantasy.

Maybe it’s just me but I was a lil disappointed in this interview. You could tell Ellen was trying to get her to go into detail about what she’s doing now for a career and it seems like all of Molly’s responses were either well scripted and or vague. My instincts tell me she’s still “networking” with her previous employers.

She's writing a scripted series that she hopes gets pitched and she's a public speaker

I liked her story because I had spinal fusion when I was 11 and it was a 80 degree curved. It definitely takes a lot out of you I was never an Olympic but not being able to play much sports anymore is sad especially if your her. Spinal fusion is a BIG deal. 10 hr surgery and screws in ur back.
