I'm 71 and the thought of listening to 55-year-old when I was a kid was so foreign to my friends and me, and here we are listening to 55-year-old music in 2023/24.

I heard this when it came out in 1967, 57 years ago as I write. All of the music of the 1910 charts that I would ever have recognized (“Let Me Call You Sweetheart”, for example) I had already heard in grade school. The music from 1910-1967 changed a lot more than from 1967 until today. The great thing about modern musicians mining old music is 1) it really showcases how musicianship has reached a higher level and 2) for old guys like me, it helps tune my ear into new musicians as a gateway into their contemporary material.

Well, the older we get, the more the music of our own era starts to sound like "home" for us... However I also think that those of us who never really lose the drive and passion for music in general and discovery in specific, start to realize that despite trends, great songwriting is about as timeless as it gets. Although the general culture is very different, and the mainstream is very different, I could see "White Rabbit" being written today, and there are plenty of young people who appreciate this song! ... but that's also one of the curses of humanity... that when we're teenagers, and at our physical peak, we're usually too self centered and arrogant to see the bigger picture. But humans have been producing absolute bangers for centuries now! lol Although tbh, IMO we perfected both song writing and recording somewhere between the 1960s and the 1970s lol... just saying. (Saying that as a child of the 80s-90s, for the record lol)

Slick sang it with and ever-increasing urgency that climaxed into desperation....matching the snare drum cadence with what appeared to be unlimited horsepower for her vocal delivery...Obviously never getting the recognition for the quality in her voice...but able to lay claim to establishing a timeless classic that's as good now as it was way back then.

This is a kind of rustic jazz from The Great American Songbook (ca 2023) and these are the kind of people who can play it. First there was folk rock, then acid rock. Now they run with it and make it jazz. This is roughly what happened in the 20th Century with blues, croon, torch, and swing when jazz versions proliferated throughout the fifties, sixties, seventies, and eighties. It is high time we jazzed the rock.

Thinking back to the week in 1967 when White Rabbit hit the air waves. I recall when my family was driving back from the lake on a Sunday and my Mom and Dad were quite happy to let the radio blare out 'modern' music. White Rabbit came on. Right away I told my parents then that White Rabbit would become a number one hit for Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane. Even though I love Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway, there will never be anyone who can top Grace Slick's rendition of this great song. On another note. Molly has great legs.

This 'collection' is a classic bluegrass ensemble. Bluegrass players are all virtuosos and when they get a little tired of the classic bluegrass sound, they do stuff like this. Search out David Grissman - Dawg music or Billy Strings and a host of others that take bluegrass in different directions. It's basically just playing 'music' on bluegrass instruments. It's great. There is jazz grass, jam grass, rock grass. It's easy to find a 'branch' of bluegrass that you would like even if you don't like the original songs of Bill Monroe or Ralph Stanley. Check out the songs of Scott Holstein who takes bluegrass into a direction that I personally don't have a name for. Go to the Station Inn in Nashville on a Monday night to hear the 'Carl Jackson Show'. $15 cover. Audience is silent ie they are there to listen. Check out Val Story singing with Carl at the Station Inn singing 'A ghost of a chance' written by Carl... link below, These are all bluegrass musicians but, let's just call them musicians. Have fun. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipmcmnuAabOreKM
