I had absolutely no idea what I was getting into when you all recommended that I check out and react to Babymetal! The first song of theirs I decided to watch was Megitsune. Here's my reaction to the official M/V. These girls seem to represent the perfect combination of a Japanese girl group and Metal band! I've never seen anything like this - and I think I'm in love! Please let me know what other songs of theirs I should react to in the future!

Why they're so adorable? Because this is "kawaii metal" which roughly translate to cute/adorable metal. A new subgenre of metal that Babymetal create in 2010 😁.

Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. You asked how old they are - in this video, from 2013, Su-metal (lead vocalist) was 15, Yuimetal and Moametal (backing vocals, harmonies, dance and in charge of hyping and involving the audiences in live shows) were 13 (I think the video was released on one of them's 14th birthday). 'Megitsune' (your pronunciation was very good) reflects a lot of the Japanese culture starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen I think) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains why the fox masks were so prominent in this video) which in Japanese mythology are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong. The part you liked best with the breakdown with the pig squeals uses the exact melody of an old and very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). When Su pulled the short blade (tanto) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). This is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss. Much of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. BABYMETAL formed in 2010 as a sub-unit of a school themed Idol group called Sakura Gakuin around the talents of Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal). She was only 12, Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) were 11. In 2013 Su was 15 and it was time for her to graduate from Sakura Gakuin (the school theme meant that group was for school age girls - 10 to 15) and it was decided that BABYMETAL should separate with her as her vehicle to further her career as a singer and dancer, so they became a band in their own right. They are the originators and pioneers of 'Kawaii-Metal' (ie cute metal) which is a blend of metal with Jpop aesthetics. The name BABYMETAL was chosen for two reasons (their age may have had some bearing as well): - to symbolize that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal) - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun): BABYMETAL = ベビメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru) heavy metal = ヘビメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru) In live shows they are supported by the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians - they can play anything ... which is just as well as BABYMETAL have songs in virtually every metal genre and they will also mix in many other musical styles and genres with the metal, usually when you least expect it. They have about 50 songs now, every one of them is different. Some are straight metal some lean more towards their pop roots and they do everything in between. They are also one of the very best live performance acts on the planet, so pick any song, find a live performance video (try to avoid fan made compilation videos - some are good, but there are too many that chop the songs and performances up and get really confusing with the constant changes of costume, lighting and stages and one or two that even cut out whole verses or re-order the songs). Try the Legend 1997 (actually December 2013, Su-metal's 16th birthday celebration) live performance of 'Headbanger' to get an idea of their live shows. I'm sure you will get a lot more suggestions and requests and they are all going to be good songs.

Babymetal has a lot of support from the metal community as a whole. Of course there are some haters out there, but if Metallica had Babymetal open for them, and Rob Halford performed with them, I'd say they have earned the respect of the metal community. There is a great video of the song Ijime Dame Zettai (No More Bullying Forever) being performed in 2014 at the Sonisphere Festival in the UK. This was the first festival outside of Asia they had ever performed at, and were not well known at all. In fact, many people were not at all happy with the fact that some j-pop metal dance band was going to be performing at their beloved metal festival, and on the same stage Metallica and Iron Maiden would be performing on. There were even rumors that people were going to boo and throw bottles at them. None of that happened, in fact, by the time Babymetal finished their 30 minute set the crowd was chanting for more. The Sonisphere performance was the turning point for Babymetal, they were being talked about all over the world now, and their video for the meme song Gimme Chocolate blew up around that same time and launched them into the mainstream metal scene. It's sometimes referred to as the Miracle at Sonisphere. I urge you to check out the video for that song - Babymetal - Ijime Dame Zettai - Sonisphere 2014.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🦊 ⛩ There are some gatekeeping metal elitists that have an issue with BABYMETAL, but they are widely accepted by the actual musicians. At least the successful ones. : ) Lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, or Su) was 15 when the 'Megitsune' video and single were released in June 2013. Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) were about to turn 14. The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group. Chidori Yakumo is their director. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown. Yui and Moa have said that this was the most difficult choreography from the first album. And although it's a big favorite of hers, Su has said that this one is difficult for her to sing live.

1. "Megitsune" is my favorite Babymetal song. The name translates to "vixen" (female fox). The word "kitsune" is used for both regular foxes as well as mythological fox spirits. This song is about the latter. Babymetal has a sort of fox spirit worship schtick, and you may see their fans making a sort of fox sign rather than the usual devil horns. 2. One interesting thing about Babymetal is that their lyrics are age-appropriate. For example, "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" is about bullying; "Gimme Chocolate" is about, well, begging for chocolate. 3. Babymetal was a subunit of the now-disbanded J-pop idol group, Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom School). The group performed as a whole, but they also had "clubs." Babymetal was the heavy music club. Other clubs had their own subunits, but I think only Babymetal blew up such that it overshadowed the main group. If you like J-pop, and if you have two hours to kill, you can see a recording of one of their concerts here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/epObqa2Oar2BoM0 Unfortunately, there are no English subtitles for the skits between songs. 4. If you want more pop idol-fronted Japanese metal, check out Necronomidol. As you might have guessed from their name, they sing about Lovecraftian themes. Their videos are pretty cool too. Fun Fact: Whereas "Dungeons and Dragons" is the most popular tabletop RPG in the West, in Japan, it is "Call of Cthulhu," and the player base consists mostly of women in their 30's. 5. If you want J-rock with a (semi-)cute theme, check out Band Maid. It is a legit rock band which has gained some popularity in the West, and they dress like maids for their performances and generally do a maid theme (they refer to their fans as "masters," for example). I don't know if they have their own maid café in Shibuya. 6. If you want more conventional J-pop, you might want to look into the group Perfume. They like to incorporate electronic music sounds into their songs, and they are one of the (very) few J-pop groups to utilize KZbin they way K-pop does.

Regarding 5: Band Maid are an "incredibly hard rocking maid band" that use the Maid concept of the Maid cafe ("Maido") culture in Akihabara, Tokyo. The Manga capitol and the Maido capitol of the World. Their founder Miku Kobato was working as a Maid in these cafes (not cleaning, more like as a companion, idol and care giver, like a geisha), before she created the band. They don't own a cafe, although they frequent and perform in Shibuya, Tokyo, often. They are incredible musicians and their sound is amazing. Fan Fact 1: One of their latest MVs, After Life is all shot inside a Maid Cafe locker room, where the Maids (and later the cleaning lady and the manager) are rebelling because of the lack of work, due to COVID. But they go crazy, Agretsuko style. And they have been to a tour of the Maid Cafes in Akihabara, dressed as maids, as part of a TV show... Fun Fact 2: Band Maid's distribution company is Pony Canyon, which is the same as the K-Pop-Rock group Dreamcatcher used to have in Japan, until August 2021. Now Dreamcatcher have moved to Sony Music, the company behind Baby Metal. Band Maid continue with Pony Canyon.

Excellent first reaction and great job on your pronunciation of Megitsune. You're right, Babymetal does take quite a bit of criticism from some in the metal community but it gets less and less over time. Babymetal refuses to be defined or put in a box. The girls knew almost nothing about metal going in to this Babymetal project so they were basically like clean slates who then absorbed the metal culture and learned from the very best, such as Metallica, Rob Halford, Slipknot, etc. Meanwhile their critics who stood in judgement claimed their own metal cred because they owned a Slayer T-shirt. 😂 Like I said though, these people are more and more rare now. I hope you check out more Babymetal. It sounds like you get the spirit of what they are all about so I am sure you will have a great time with them.

Great reaction, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL! "Megitsune" is a total fan favorite and their most played live song. And it's also a perfect way to get introduced to BABYMETAL in my opinion, specially with this music video (which is a masterpiece!). And about its locations: - The stage where they are performing is called Nohgakudo at Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine in Tokyo. This is a stage where music and dances are performed during festivals. - The shrine right before the breakdown is the Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto So glad you enjoyed the breakdown... it's my favorite of all time :) As many have said (and will say), their strongest point is live performances (for many reasons: production, stage presence, choreo, live vocals, live band, etc.). So I'd like to suggest you this one: "Headbanger" (Live at Legend 1997): kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3bWgJSDl7N5rdk Until next time!

When you started with K-pop I was wondering if this genre and Babymetal would be suggested. I'm glad to see you enjoyed them. Babymetal is a unique experience in the Metal genre and to listen to. There are multiple difference music styles and influences thrown into their music. There were many years after their international introduction where the metal community were very hostile to them, but they are still here going strong, many of those former hostile people a part of the fanbase, The One. As well as with the backing and support of many big artists.

It was Su's vocals that drew me in and i started to appreciate how good the dancing was and really enjoy it . Which not being a dance fan supprised me . I would say Headbangèr at the Legend 1997 show or Ijime Dame Zettai at Sonisphere in the UK 2014 would be good performances to react to and as many will have already said Live is Best they have won awards for Best live Band several times amongst many other international awards . They're young AND short. Su, the lead singer, and Moa, the remaining of the two other girls, are now in their early 20s and are 5' 2" and 5' 1" respectively (some say Moa is 5' even). Here, Su is 15 while Moa and Yui (Yui left the group in 2018) are 13 but would turn 14 shortly after the video's release. While Yui has never officially been replaced, Babymetal's newer videos ("Pa Pa Ya!" "Elevator Girl" "Shanti Shanti" and "Da Da Dance") feature someone dancing in her place. The most prominent of those dancers are three alternating women called the Avengers: Riho, Kano, and the longest-tenured Avenger, Momoko.
@garykeeling2275
@garykeeling2275 2 жыл бұрын
It is my sincere hope that when they come back from their hiatus, if it doesn't bring the return of Yui, that they will officially name Momoko as the third member! That is, assuming she hasn't gone on to other things like Kano and Riho. I'm not sure if her participation in that recent Girls Planet 99 competition show in Korea indicated she is moving on or not.
@PaleHorseShabuShabu
@PaleHorseShabuShabu 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think we should use Girls Planet 99 as an indication of anything. Momoko was on the show, her team was eliminated, and that's where it ends. I don't take that as an indication of anything other than that she knew Babymetal wouldn't be needing her during that time. As for a third member, I don't have any strong feelings one way or another. Yui was a great dancer who appeared to always get along with Su and especially Moa, so if there's a way for her to return, I'm fine with it. If not, that's fine to. I think the bigger question what is Babymetal going to return as during the Living Legend phase?

Yeah Japan has been a Secret in Pushing the Envelope of Modern Music. In the West we never hear or see acts like this on our airwaves sadly. Japan is Loaded with Progressive and World Class Musical Performers. BabyMetal is a Trio/Duo of Front Women with Su as the Golden Voice surrounded by Moa/Yui/etc.. flanking her with backing vocals and Olympic Rated Routines. The band is seperate and called Kami band. This band stay's in coustume and is a Rotation of many Established and Gifted Musicians from both Japan and the US. This Japanes rabbitt hole runs far and is well rewarding. The Female Metal and Music scene is off the hook in Japan btw. You are abolutely right, there have been and still are a lot of Metal elitists that give them sh*t for being not real and breaking their "rules", which is pretty hilarious, given that the roots of Metal were just that. I have been a metalhead basically all my life, and I have never been so much in love like I am with BABYMETAL now. And I think their fresh and unique way is a boon to Metal. Without such influences Metal would have been dead long ago. They fuse all sorts of genres with Metal, and it all sounds great. What you have seen is just half of what makes them so awesome. They also bring that choreography to the stage, and it makes the whole shows so much more entertaining. They take the word "performance" to a new level, I'm sure you'll agree once you see it. Wow, what a great reaction! You're right that the lead singer has a great voice, and you can really hear it when they're live. They are one of those rare bands that sounds _better_ live than on the albums. I recommend 'Headbanger' live at Legend 1997 or 'Rondo of Nightmare' live at Budokan Black Night for your next foray. Both of those are copyright-safe, unlike the videos from their official channel; just make sure if you do Rondo that you find one of the uploads that's around 7 minutes long, as unfortunately some of them omitted part of the performance. The word you were looking for when trying to describe their 'little girl' style is 'kawaii' - a Japanese word that best translates to 'childish cuteness' (i.e. _not_ sexualized cuteness) but also has a lot of other cultural baggage around it. There's a whole movement called 'kawaii culture' in Japan, and Babymetal is the fusion of that with heavy metal...and a whole lot of other genres. You mentioned the horror themes present in that MV; those are present to a greater or lesser degree in a lot of their stuff, as you'll see if you continue down the -rabbit- fox hole (foxes are even more prevalent in their stuff than horror themes; in fact, their 'lore' involves divine revelations being handed down to them from the 'Fox God'). I'd also like to recommend you check out the translation of the lyrics for this song, especially with some cultural context. If you google 'Du-metal Babymetal translation' you'll find an old blog on blogspot from this guy who did unofficial translations of the lyrics from their first two albums and included a lot of really useful context, and Megitsune is on there (easiest way to find it would be to click the 'Song List' link on the desktop version of the site). Really hope to see more from you, this was excellent!

You should check their live performance. The crowd and the energy is nothing I ever seen in a live show. Usually people watch their MV , Give me chocolate for the first time so you check that out too. Only the Fox God knows.

I've been a die hard metal head all my life, and I dig Babymetal. While by far not my favorite, I'm always appreciative of anything that takes the genre to new territories. Now, if you want another all girl Japanese band that absolutely ROCKS, check out BANDMAID and their song "Thrill". Consider that an official request.

Your explanation about the video it's very accurate: Kitsunes are mistical creatures in Japanese culture, so yes you nailed it with the fantasy vibes. And you also nailed it with the appreciation this band had in the metal community back in the day. Luckily people opened their eyes and saw beyond the first impression and found a fresh and unique new way of making metal music. Hope to see more reactions of BM and see you falling down into the fox hole =)

Liking your reaction video! I’m concerned, though, that if you were to properly orientate yourself to Babymetal, by watching Gimme Chocolate (which is the first Babymetal video you should have watched), you would become a part of the one. Once you do that there’s no turning back and you end up loving them forever. Kitsune up!

Great & welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。I appreciate your good "Megitsune" pronunciation, too. BM's activities have been worldwide. For example, tours prior to the COVID19 in 2019 / 2020, they performed live 20 times in US, 19 in EU/UK/Russia, 1 in Taiwan and 15 in Japan. This year, they carefully restarted their activities and completed 10 concerts here in Tokyo at a big arena taking very strict countermeasures against infection. Girls are now matured and yet their performance is energetic and more sophisticated. Please explore BABYMETAL more.

Nice one. Cute and badass. You nailed it. The metal community loves Babymetal. The metal elitist hates them. You should watch them play live on stage with Rob Halford, or Drogonforce, or Red Hot Cilli Peppers. The only people that hates on them are the ones that are jealous. Just ask Corey Taylor, Bring me the Horizon, Sabaton, Arch Enemy, etc. etc. and ask do they hate them.

Hi!!! Haha I love your reaction I've been listening to metal for over 10 years and Babymetal became one of my favourite bands of all time !!! it's different from "traditional metal" but they are metal without any doubt, and they are great, both the girls and the Kami Band (The musicians) are excellent at what they do. You have a world whole to discover, Babymetal are a genre by themselves, you'll see hehe. Well greetings from Mexico !! /o/ PD: You should react to Headbangeeeer live version (Babymetal live grows a lot ) :P

Ass cool as BABYMETAL's MV's are their live concert videos are a magnitude better . Their shows are brain melting and next level compared to arguably any other band out there . Now that you reacted to the MV of Megitsune you should react to it live and you'll see what I mean . Also their songs Road of resistance , Headbanger , Shine and Rondo of Nightmare all "live" are great examples of just what BABYMETAL is about . Also understanding the lyrics to the songs is important . There are many concert videos with english subs. to choose from . " Enjoy your journey down The Foxhole . "

From the Babymetal Reactor Resource kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2WTh6CKfbibasU Going forward, if reactors want to keep reacting to the videos, I've come up with a solution that will make it possible to continue using the videos with logos that have already been tested against blocks. I've made a spreadsheet - docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZYdthVAHYaOAYL6AuhVOHotQinMoPPFEuspqDMIIGD4/edit#gid=0 with links to both the logo videos and the non logo videos and are hosing them on a Russian social media site that won't remove them, and is out of the reach of the copyright trolls. There are a bit over 30 videos on there now, but I'll keep uploading more every day until they're all back up. I'll also be adding new videos that I'll test on an alt KZbin account before adding to the spreadsheet. If you can't access the spreadsheet for whatever reason, here are direct links to both the non logo videos and the videos with logos: No logos - ok.ru/video/c6630874 With logos - ok.ru/video/c7184602 For reactors that want to put your own logo over the videos, here is a link to the logos I use that are already made transparent - drive.google.com/file/d/1JUVfJGp36xR2n1FHl7PzRIxXhA5P4VyW/viewor you can use whatever logo you'd like. You can download the videos, which I recommend since the site can be a bit laggy sometimes, from this free website - sovid.net/ I recommend using the "HD" option when downloading to keep the file size reasonably small. Although there are other videos on my channel there, only use the ones on the spreadsheet because some of the other non logo videos aren't KZbin safe. Kitsunes UP!

I am not familiar with traditional Japanese arts and that person, but it is called "日本舞踊 (Nihon Buyo, Japanese performing arts (dance))" that the woman is dancing in the kimono, wearing a fox mask, and having a fan at the breakdown. If I watch the way she forms her body lines, I guess that she has some background in Japanese dance for sure. It is said that even if you can dance a nice Western break dance, you can never dance a Japanese dance by imitation. In that sense too, this MV is authentically oriented, isn't it? Thank you from Japan.

The dancer in the kimono is Chidori Yakumo 千鳥八雲 and she is the Director of Movement Design. The performers in white miming playing the traditional instruments are dancers from Movement Design.

@@johnschultz7765 Thanks for sharing the information. I did a quick search for "Chidori Yakumo". I had no idea she was such a young woman. "HANNARIC" is a contemporary dance, isn't it? But since it says in the summary section that her dance is of the Fujima school (藤間流), I guess she has a real background. Also, there were some SNS sites that I don't know what to say, like "I'm going to marry Jongguk-kun" (lol).

I had a similar reaction the first time I watched one of their videos... IMHO this is one of the MVs that are a must watch as an intro... I thought it was one of the greatest things I had ever seen...lol Not long after finding them I discovered Band Maid as well...they've actually become my fav... Where Babymetal is of course more metal sounding, Band Maid is more Rock... The biggest difference though is Band Maid plays their own instruments and fairly early on began to write their own songs...(not saying thats better, just the main difference). From that point on its been all J-Metal and J-Rock for me. I've even come to enjoy some J-pop in the process...lol The biggest challenge of reactig to Babymetal is their parent company Amuse is notorious about copyright strikes so reacting to them takes alot of editing...covering the video with a watermark is a great start! :) Seems most of the other J-bands have not had that issue... the live of GImme Chocolate is probably the other must listen intro song imho... This is the tip of the iceberg....fasten your seat belts...lol

I've been a big fan of Baby Metal for over 5 years, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for their musical talent, and I'm almost notoriously difficult to impress musically ; I've also seen some negative comments on KZbin by so - called, "metal purists ", that their definition of what is metal , and what is not, is the final word on the subject ; when in reality, I've probably forgotten more about metal, and music in general, than they ever knew, and their criticisms only make them sound pathetic, and insecure about their masculinity.....😉😁 ✌&🖤

Babymetal is the creation of Key Kobayashi (Kobametal), producer with the Amuse Talent Agency Tokyo. He wanted to combine Jpop with Metal. He discovered Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal) when she was in the Idol group Karen's Girls (9 yo). Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal) and Moa Kikuchi (Moametal) are the Dance and Scream team, their words. This was in 2010. They were the first Japanese band to perform in the Wembley Area, London; they performed a sold-out concert in the LA Forum, and performed 2 sold-out concerts (consecutive nights) in the Tokyo Dome. Concert Capacity 55,000. All 3 have been performing on stage since they were 6 yo. They are at their best Live. One video to see the charisma and control would be "Karate" at the Download Festival. The most popular one would be "Road of Resistance" Live in Japan or "Headbanger" Legend of 1997. As to the metal world, they have toured with Metallica, Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and (not metal) Lady Gaga! Plus performing with Dragon Force with Herman Li and Sam Totman writing the guitar lines for Road of Resistance.

Great Reaction. The next Babymetal video you should react to is Road of Resistance - Live in Japan. In that one video those 3 girls had a crowd of 20,000 in the palms of their hands and you get to see everything that makes Babymetal the phenomenom they are: Powerful stage presence, Amazing vocals, on point choreography, great music and crowd interaction that only Babymetal can do. As for thier ages, this song was released 19th June 2013 so at the time of release the lead singer Su-Metal was 15, and for the other 2 Yui-Metal was about to turn 14 the day after release and Moa-Metal would have been 13 (although she turned 14 around 3 weeks after release of the song).

I'm the same as some of your other commentators - 54 year old metal head - and they ARE the real deal - there are a lot of people that turn up their noses at Babymetal which is just being close minded. This was quite a while ago - they were the last concert I went to in 2020 (pre pandemic) and it was breathtaking. As for their ages here, I think it was around 14 or 15? Now they are around 23 . I'm so glad you started with this one and kept an open mind - most reactors start with 'Gimme Chocolate' and think WTF is this and never react to them again. I would suggest maybe 4 of Su Metal's solo numbers 'Rondo of Nightmare' including the Kami Band's intro. 'Akatsuki' , 'Amore' and 'No Rain no Rainbow' They are so unique and a breath of fresh air to Metal! Looking forward to your next one - live performances are better btw. Take care 🙂
