I really appreciate that you acknowledged the problematic component of Gypsy’s name. She was not named out of malice/to hurt people, but it’s ok to take a step back, learn, and do things differently. She was a lovely dog and you should treasure your memories with her. I’m also glad that you reached back out to take her name off of the list.
@user-dd9zr5ep4m2 жыл бұрын
Yes, although she was named for a musician whose name was Gypsy, it’s still can hurt people so it’s best to retire the name because not everyone would know the origins of her name.
@reginafallangie28672 жыл бұрын
I think the word Gypsy in itself is not offensive because there are groups of people who still refer to themselves as such. However, I could c how naming a dog after a culture, ethnicity, heritage, etc could be offensive

And seeing as Elton John’s sister has that name, she may be the last one.
@keziahrios-lazo16412 жыл бұрын
@@reginafallangie2867 Just because some people are okay with the name doesn't mean all Roma people are okay with the name. It is literally an ethnic slur so unless you are Romani, don't use it. People who don't know anything about the discrimination Roma people faced should not romanticize their experiences. No one should. They were forced to move from place to place because of violence and prejudice. It was not a lifestyle they chose. "G*psy" is literally a putdown. It is also a verb that means to be cheated. It is a racist caricature. Just go read the articles Molly linked or do your own research.

There are a lot of options on Amazon, but if anyone is looking for a recommendation, the All For Paws Chill Out dog bandana is great. Props to the owner who alerted you to his dog’s vicious behavior and moved to the street. Hopefully he’s working to untrain his dog, but it’s a long process. Even before he noticed you were blind, he took steps to walk his dog when there was minimal foot traffic, announced the behavior to another dog owner, and made sure your dogs did not interact. I wish more dog owners would take note. (Not to belittle how scary it must have been!!)

Haha when you talked about food vs. praise motivation reminded me of my dog's and mine training. She's just a family dog but she had some unique challenges that made me feel incapable of training her 100% alone so we went to a group course. The first thing we were supposed to do was find a treat that really motivates our dog. When I said she doesn't really care about food, everyone in class thought I just didn't do my homework. Especially the trainer. EVERYONE thought that my dog would love their dogs' favourite food. No dice. She ignored them all. By the end of class it became a joke. Like even waiting before eating. She'd sit. wait. then go to the bowl when I gave her her command.... and then she'd look at me like "but this isn't the time or place for eating" and she wouldn't eat. She ended up being the best in her class, but she just wanted a "good girl" and maybe a head pat. She'd take a treat occasionally, but she'd ignore treats or spit them out more often than she'd take them lol.
@livelongandprospermary87962 жыл бұрын
My dog is the same way. She is at best indifferent to most treats or outright hates them. I ended up using a “likity stick” which was just like thick broth/gravy in a tube with one of those roller ball tops. She sort of likes that. She also isn’t motivated by toys or attention/love either. We tried a training class. We also sent her to “boarding school” where she spent 2 weeks with a trainer who thought we were exaggerating her unmotivation and even this $2000 training course with our area’s best trainer who has YEARS and dozens of dogs under her training belt couldn’t get our dog much better than where she is at. The main thing we were worried about with our baby is that she is super anxious. Like any new thing/sudden movement of anything startles her like she was ab*sed. She’s never been with anyone except us and our very trusted family members since she was 8w old however she was fixed at 6w old and we suspect that messed up her brain and caused/contributed to her anxiety disorder. We used to take her out every weekend to new places, new ppl, new things, other dogs, etc. and one day she just became unbearably anxious and it was just too much for her. We tried CBD but it didn’t help. Eventually we got another dog and she’s much happier with him around but still an anxious girl at times. Short of doggy Xanax, this is the way she is. Kinda hard to positively reinforce a dog who hates/doesn’t care about anything. Shes like a cat, attention on HER terms lol

She's a pitty mix, so some people thought that was weird, but she only ever barks to alert us to something. Whether that be someone at the door, a package getting delivered, or when she scared off an intruder while I was home alone once! The rechargeable 4-5 inch fans we've had since bringing him home helps a great deal! There are great ones on Amazon from HandiFan (one word). They last for hours and can be plugged into a battery bank on the go if need be. It's small enough not to make you cold and big enough to keep him cooler. Hope this tip helps!

That alerting woof/boof sound is very typical Berners! He will keep you safe for sure! 😄 And it is good you acknowledge that you have been alerted so he can let it go. The sweetest dogs are the Elton kind of dogs, they really love work and search for work to do, your companionship will be wonderful! Sadly a lot of those kinds of dogs who love work end up with a owner who don't do anything with them and also the weird idea some people have that it is bad to let your dog work or help. Some dogs love work some don't, they are all individuals and people really should not just think working dogs are some kind of animal abuse. Working dogs want to work, they love work and get depressed when they don't get to work! Thank you, for at least somehow educating people on that matter, as you mention a lot in your videos, the dogs choose if they want to work and that the dog gets to choose when it is time for retirement. Have a nice day. 😄

She's a small black Labrador cross Golden Retriever and she's a very sweet girl. She's also very vocal like Elton, she gives me a little warning bark but she also grumbles at me a lot! And what you said about them knowing they're in training is so right, Dot had amazing dog distraction in training, even the trainers were surprised. We trained in a very dog populated area so we saw them every day and she would swing me right out to get as far away from them as she could but since we've come home she's gotten quite distracted by them and we've had to work on it, cheeky thing!

I've definitely had dogs that are rule followers and very strict about their schedules. They are interesting characters, but they are all individuals. Also, being a double coated dog, you may find yourself needing to open windows in the winter because they are too hot. I live somewhere that snows and we will have windows open an inch or so in the dead of winter because the dogs are too hot.

When you were talking about “good boy behavior” it reminded me so much of my Odin. I can’t even teach him to speak because he knows I hate it when they bark. I bet Odin would have made an amazing working dog, and I bet he and Elton would be friends. Lol.

A hike with Elton John would be fun to see! Something similar to the park that you went to with Bennix with the suspension bridge.

My dog reacted, and started barking back at your dog impression. 😂 Evidently you're very accurate

That's so interesting! The sign I learned for "dog" in ASL is the same gesture you used for "turn around." The two slaps on the upper thigh. I know there are regional differences for signs, but I wonder if there is any connection? Thank you so much for sharing and educating

Our kitty Cinnamon was having a high old time rolling around on the deck, when suddenly, she plunged off the edge! How I laughed!
