I was taking a music theory class my senior year of high school and for one of the questions of the final exam, the teacher asked us to guess the time signature of a song, giving us a hint that it was in the name. She proceeded to play Eleven from this album. All the metal heads and stoners answered before the serious musicians finished counting it out.

@@mollyesanborn I will second this recommendation. Tom Waits is a singular legend.
@wulfgold
@wulfgold Ай бұрын
@@iandawson6461 I third this recommendation. Waits is one of my top 3 artists of all time, huge respect for the man that carved out his career and probably could've retired but decided to get weirder and more expoerimental. There's a lot of Waits albums and variance in there, I'd maybe go either "Small Change" for prime-early era gnarled beauty or "Mule Variatons" for later era weirdness with a mix of some really tender and beautiful songs "Georgia Lee" off that album will break your heart and still makes me teary - it's worth reading the background of it. Waits is possibly the greatest American Songwriter > Bob Dylan. His songs have been covered by Bette Midler, Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Tori Amos, Frank Black (Pixies), Booker T, The Ramones - you know the great think he's great ;) You've almost certainly seen him in film + not known who he is too.

The most evocative album of 1991! I used to go to a 24 hour billiards/pool hall after work and play this entire album on the jukebox. Pretty much every night. This evoked anger into a great number of hair-metal or country ruffians who would often try to pick fights with me. Definitely took some shots, but I also won a lot of money that summer. And I credit this album. Thanks Primus!

What I always loved about Primus, other than the suburb musicianship, is it has this vibe of some disturbing kids movie that you vaguely remember watching… For another truly unique band of the 90s I’ll still be championing Morphine, as they’re rarely covered but have a cool, unique sound with a saxophone instead of guitar. Les Claypool was a big fan of the band, and since the frontman/bassist Mark Sandman’s passing has a special mic with his name on it on stage. He also having covered one of their songs with the surviving members (though he’s got a *very* different voice) - thanks again Molly, these types of albums are my favourites that you react to! 🧀💛

You nailed that description for Primus' sound, there is something a bit odd and unsettling about it at times. They know how to fuse a lot of different styles together so effectively. I'll have to check out Morphine, someone else suggested them as well. That's cool that they use a saxophone!

I'm trying not to tell you anything you don't already know, but Primus come from El Sobrante, California which is ~ fifteen minutes north of Berkeley. Anyway, on August 13, 1982 King Crimson played the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California and it was a freaking monumental concert (officially recorded and released by the band), and I'm about 90% sure Les Claypool was there. I was there, and I was 16 and Les is three years older. If not that '82 show, Crimson played the same venue in '84 as well. I was at both. 1980s King Crimson was a huge influence on us all back then and especially weird rock bands. Subbed.

If u watch the Primus live concert video 'Hallucino Genetics' from 2004, u can appreciate the live versions more - songs like 'American life'... 'Sgt. Baker'... sound more vibrant and energetic live... The concert has a full live performance of their debut album 'Frizzle Fry'... Les Claypool (bass/ vocals) said that the album title 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese'... referred to Primus trying to navigate through the 'cheesy' rock scene of 1991 (when the album was released) w/ popular rock bands like Bon Jovi ... Firehouse... Winger ... Danger Danger... etc. What Claypool did not predict that Nirvana would break big in 1991 and the indie rock scene that Primus was part of since the 80's would explode in popularity in the early 90's ... MTV played the videos for "Tommy the cat"... 'Jerry was a race car driver'... and the album sold a half million copies in the US. Primus' third studio album 'Pork Soda' in 1993 would become a bigger hit - also selling a half million copies and when Primus took the stage at the festival Woodstock '94, they were greeted by a huge response from the massive crowd, after years playing clubs and hearing, "Primus sucks!"

Everything going okay? I notice you haven't uploaded in a couple weeks (taking a holiday break perhaps)? Just curious, and of course no hurry, take all the time you need!

Thanks for reaching out! Life's been busy lately, December has been flying by and the holiday season has been a bit difficult this year for personal reasons. I've also been busy working on my favorite albums/songs of the year lists so that has cut a lot into my editing time. I've got a new reaction coming very soon though, and stay tuned for my fav albums/songs of 2024 videos as well :)

Would love to see you react to: Rainbow Butt Monkeys- Letters to Chutney After this album they changed their name to Finger Eleven. You may recognize that name. This album however is true 90's grunge and fantastic. After this, their genre style changed. April's Motel Room- Black 14 A 90's grunge band that for some reason did not make it any further than this one singular album. But the album is amazing and up there for me personally with albums like Ten, Core, Nevermind, Superunknown. It doesn't have the big massive hits or anything, but every song throughout is quite good. One of my favorite albums of the grunge era out there. And don't ask me how i found out about it cause it was endless depths of the internet research. There is not much about them online at all. Both these albums need more attention in the community. The fact they don't, is a major travesty. And if you find out you like them, i have plenty of other great deepcut offerings. Trust me!

Great Vid! Can't wait for Primus - Pork Soda! Also, if you are looking for some more awesome Mike Patton, highly recommend listening to his band Fantomas, the best first album listen would be Directors Cut (imo). It is a lot of horror movie scores/themes re-imagined into Mike Patton insanity and it is awesome!

Most bands can do two great albums, no worries, but often that 3rd album falls off in quality - three albums is my benchmark for a great band. Primus managed 5 great albums before a drop off in quality.

The more you listen to the stranger bands the more I can't wait to see your reaction when you start to cover "Brainiac" albums b/c you will have never heard a band like Brainiac or any other band remotely close to "Brainiac" after. Primus was like watching someone using a bass like a composer uses a Piano to its complete and total dynamic potential. Less Claypool is a genius.

Love when anyone reacts to Primus and I really enjoy your style of reactions/reviews so by all means keep reacting to the suckiest band of them all please, and if you're up to the task, keep doing it in chronological order. Next on line: Pork Soda. My personal favorite, perhaps their darkest one, such an ominous masterpiece of humor and chaos.
