Hell yeah, Opeth! As others have pointed out, the vocals are all Mikael Åkerfeldt. Not only does he do both vocals and lead guitar, he is also the primary songwriter for the band. He's also self taught, which probably impacts their sound. They use some rather unconventional chords, even by metal standards in some places. What I love about Opeth is that nearly every song is a journey. There are a couple songs here and there that mostly stay in the same sonic space, but most of their songs have well defined parts which contrast and provide completely different atmospheres. And yeah, one of the things I love about Blackwater Park is the use of acoustic guitars in the mix. It adds so much. And the engineering is just gorgeous.

Love opeth. Ghost Reveries needs to be on your short list, but I’d also recommend leaping way ahead into their most recent album In Cauda. Been obsessed with it lately. In a similar vein to this, taking progressive to the next level, look into the album Colors by Between the Buried and Me. All Berkeley grads, incredibly diverse and complex album, from intense growls to polka!

Okay. Opeth’s Blackwater Park album is undeniably a masterpiece. But, I can’t help but admire how beautifully you articulate your thoughts. Were you an English major in college or something?

The dark dream theater. Gothical jazzgroovecore. So poetically haunting and rocky yet melodic snd soul touching. One of my favorite songs and bands. This, ghost revieries and my arms, your hearse sre the trinity to me. Check out a nightmare to remember by dream theater and the gallows by between the buried and me shadow fox ny cop maiden lady.

This album is their first to be produced by Steven Wilson, who Mikael Akerfeldt became friends with. The two of them recorded a collaboration album under the project name "Storm Corrosion". Opeth learned a lot from Steven Wilson production wise. E.g. such trick effects where it sounds like the song comes through a telephone or where it dissolves into static. But probably also some more regular and subtle stuff. :)

The wailing, sustained guitar notes are produced with an e-bow (electronic bow). That is a small device that you hold close to one string and it will cause the string to constantly vibrate as long as you hold the e-bow in place, just like you can do with a bow on a violin. Around that time Opeth used the e-bow a lot.

Back in the day, Opeth had four band members. Drummer, bassist, and two guitarists, one of which is also the singer and over time became the only songwriter (with few exceptions) and bandleader. His name is Mikael Akerfeldt. A brilliant guy who has amazing growls and also developed a great clean singing voice, that only becomes better with each album.

They are releasing a new album in a few hours. You can react to that. It's with returned growl vocals, which they haven't used on the last four albums. It will be just as new to you as to everyone. Many people are hyped. It will, however be much more different to Blackwater Park than, say Ghost Reveries. Cheers

If you like listening albums as a whole as if they have certain themes i can definitely recommend Between the Buried and Me and their 2007 Colors album. Just a musical journey. Also from recent ones Rivers of Nihil and their Where Owls Know My Name 2018. That album was definitely a surprise as well.

What a way to start with this band...major masterpiece. It's amazing that Mikael pulls off harsh vox, clean voxs and riffs n leads, such a talent. This album incorporates all the best elements from their first 4 records to form a monstrous whole; the quiet pieces definitely point towards their mellower proggy feel. Very excited for the new album dropping this week, Mikael is incorporating the growls again (has been years). I think you should investigate My Dying Bride as well!

I've never been good at choosing my "favorite" things. I enjoy and respect the little details or flavors of so much and don't usually value one over the other. But after 4 years of listening to Opeth, I've come around to thinking they're my favorite band. There's such a treasure trove of fantastic music, largely thanks to Mikael Akerfeldt's genius. Choosing a favorite Opeth song is just as hard, but I think I've accepted that it's Bleak. I kind of wish it wasn't so early in the album. Anyone new to the band, like you, is still trying to process what they're hearing and it can be so much to take in, and then you have several more songs left on the album. But with repeat listens, I think you can agree there's something about Bleak's structure, the way each part flows into the next, that is so satisfying and it builds up to that finale of the bridge that just sounds like perfection. Wish you had included that part in the video!

Ghost Reveries is definitely considered as a cherry of Opeth's mid-older style albums. My Arms, Your Hearse -> Deliverance -> Damnation are also great albums of that period.

My absolute favourite band! At first, I didn't enjoy them, but I knew that there truly was something special about them, as I dug through their discography and warmed up to it. This is one of the first death metal bands that I enjoyed as well, and really got me in to the more progressive sides of metal, which I prefer over the classic, brutal stuff. To me, it's just much more appealing and dense, though I do enjoy some classics as well. 3-4 of their albums are in my all-time favourites, being My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries, and I almost love Deliverance, Damnation and Watershed as much. I also enjoy their first two albums and later, more progressive rock albums. They're releasing a new album on 22th of November, and I can't wait. It seems to be a mix of their middle carrier and most recent album, In Cauda Venenum, which is great, too. From what I've heard so far, it seems to be an excellent upcoming album. Sorceress is definitely my least favourite, but I still enjoy some of the tracks, and it's still a good album overall. If I had to rank them, this would probably be my list: 5.0/5.0| Absolute / Favourite - Blackwater Park - Still Life - Ghost Reveries - My Arms, Your Hearse 4.5/5.0 | Excellent / Admire - Deliverance - Watershed - Damnation 4.0/5.0 | Great / Zest - Morningrise - In Cauda Venenum - Orchid 3.5/5.0 | Good / Enjoy - Pale Communion - Heritage 3.0/5.0 | Decent / Like - Sorceress

Coincidentally, I was listening to Opeth when I saw you posted this. I discovered them when I was 14 and they were really the band that made me fall in love with harsh vocals. I would list Blackwater Park as a must-have for anybody getting into metal, not just because it's a masterpiece, but because those harsh-melodic dynamics make it easier for a newbie to get accustomed to the heavier sides of metal without it being too overwhelming.
