Mom Critiques 15 YEARS of my Leathercraft
After 15 years, my mom has quite the collection of leather pieces I've made her. She's got dozens, and in this video we go over some of her most used, some that she used and had input on the evolution of their design, materials that have lasted and designs that just didn't work. It's always important to check in on your products and see how they hold up, as a simple correction like thread type or pocket weight can make the difference between a piece being a joy to use for decades, or a wallet someone uses for a year until they find something better. Happy Crafting!

Your mom is the best. Love her! And FWIW I love the look of that very first natural veg tan long wallet. There's something very minimal, beautiful, and feminine about the peach color, regardless of the flaws in the design.

Rule number one - always listen to your mom! Rule number two - if your mom has no comment take cover! Seriously though, it was great to meet your mom and get her perspective on how your work evolved. I'd love to hear her views on pretty much anything (apart from religion or politics) so please bring her back as often as she wants to come.

Worked with both your parents, great people and hope they are both doing well. Feedback from this customer, 3 pocket card holder has worked great use it everyday and it has worn great patina is great, maybe a little looser on the center pocket where I keep my cash but don’t go there everyday use the cards on the outside. Also have a Camo bottle hook works great and hasn’t fallen off my belt loop when I hold it that way. Tell the folks I said hello and keep doing what your doing love the content and the products, you have even inspired me to make a few things, they look like your gen one long wallet but are functional and I keep improving.

Nice to see the evolution of design. Its sometimes hard to find people honest enough to give constructive criticism as they tend to think its a negative thing. I love when people tell me what "they would change" as it gives us the best chance to grow a design. The only person not afraid to tell me if something sucks is my wife, and i love that.

Great to see your mum who is using your leather goods for such a long time. The longevity of leather is what brought me to leather work in the first place and I too have improved my skills. I still have the first card holder I made and my wife encouraged and praised me (which didn't look that great and the stitching was horrible) . Thanks for sharing this with us.

I've only been doing leathercraft for a handful of years and all of this critique resonates. I've made a handful of things for my mom - mainly purses - and my skills have progressed to the point where I cringe when she brings out the older ones. They're holding up fine and she loves them, but *my* skills have progressed beyond what they were when I first made them. It feels like looking at the macaroni art I made in 3rd grade.

Loved this video (super helpful and informative) and loved meeting your Mum. The fact that she’s doing all those miles of hiking each week at her age is fan-blinkin’-tastic and inspiring!! Please bring her back as a reoccurring guest, to share her experiences of owning/usings your wonderful handmade leather items. Also, I love that your creations satisfy both form and function. For me, form is [literally] useless without function and if you’re going to have function, you may as well have it look great too!! :-)

You’re a bloody talented person.. I wish I had the tools you have.. I feel like im in restraint’s & frustrated leather work /craft person …currently . Anyway I love watching your work.. Also people here don’t pay a lot for our skills.. Thanks to the Mumma for the toughest job.. lol. (Ps keep camera still .. 🤢 🙂😉) I’m also really glad I’ve not seen u on a sewing machine!! It’s really hand made.. it’s not hand made unless it is , in my opinion. I learnt saddlers stitch watching here. Life has done a total 360 for me.. So I am wanting to sell my items again , but for real. People don’t take one seriously. Not great to hear with MH / ADHD. I have my moments of empowerment… like giving Pink (singer) one of my satchels.. then in a magazine over here about it.. 5 mins of fame.. Now it’s to keep me alive & focused .🤞🏼🪡🧵. Thanks again Niree Australian fan👍🏼💯☀️💫💐🍄🌟✨

I am very thankful that you did this video. It gives people like me starting out learning a new craft that we all start from somewhere. Loads of golden nuggets of wisdom shared. one that sticks out is never compare yourself to others. One question I have and it is more of an observation not a slam... I noticed that on both wallets that on the inside of wallets there is a browning. Is this or could this be caused by the button clasp? One last thing and I am going to finish the video... it is nice to see the hands that are responsible for yours.

Throughly enjoyed hearing your mom’s take on your talents & business. Hope you bring her back again soon! I want to make my own mom that same long wallet (the last version). When looking at your available patterns I don’t see the offset version with the cc slots going towards the interior middle. (My mom says the ones going out the sides aren’t secure). Am I not looking in the right spot?

My thought on a long wallet: I am old fashioned and carry a check book in mine so I always have to put a pen in mine (for the last 40 years). I always put it in the center but no one designs a place for a pen there.

Given you hand stitch, do you just not do large projects like a duffle bag or backpack; lots of pockets and loooong stitches, can take hooooours to stitch by hand. At some point, the per-hour rate to hand stitch just exceeds the sensible rate someone will pay for a large item I'd imagine.
