Not true. I think you should be parent first and friend second. You should always strive to have a good relationship with your children so they feel comfortable telling you things. For example if someone hurts them, or bullying them.

@@kimbermichelle3922 spot on. You should be a disciplinarian and be approachable, like a guidance counselor, who adjusts based upon the temperment of the child. Your child should respect you, look up to you, and in turn you provide them with the stability and nurturing required to become an adult and live their lives. Sonya was a teacher and headmaster, so her disciplinary approach was never going to be 'friend'. This is why the Curry's are premier, by far the first family of the NBA. Considering where Sonya/Dell sit as parents of three married out of three children, the means were justified.

Sonya is like my mom. She always told me and my friends "I am not your friend, I am your mother." As an adult, I appreciate that now. She raised 3 great adults, so whatever Sonya did or did not do, she did it well. Great interview. New to your show.

I could listen to Sonya all day. Such a solid, awesome, thoughtful woman. I can’t wait to dive into the devotional. My daughter is 5, but I’m so excited about continuing to develop my ideals about nurturing myself and pouring into my mini :) I was also an athlete, and grounded in my spiritual beliefs. Blessed you, to have your mother by your side. My mom left this earth 24 years ago when I was 9 years old. I still have hard time to accept it. The grief still it is inside and affects me my mental health. I still remember her pain( she died because of ovarian cancer) please people love your parents especially your mom, no one replace a mothers love. I love you mom and missed you terribly. The way you described yours and your moms relationship is 100%! I've been the same way with my mom. As a kid we bunted heads a lot. My mom was strict and always on my case. Now that I'm a parent, have my own kids and family my mom and I have a better relationship! And I too have found how much more I'm LIKE my mom. My siblings always say I'm exactly like my Mom. Agree with your Mom, you don't need to tell your Mom everything. I've learned that as I've grown up and especially now that I'm an adult.

I am a psychiatric nurse for almost 30 years and what I can say is this…mental illness is real and we all get down at some point in our lives dealing with various diversities… we are in a time when the pressure cooker gets to full and needs to let air out. What you are doing is so important to meet with real individuals in the limelight/ spotlight and they as well as yourself are real folks. I just watched the one with the Curry Ladies …OMG!!! what beautiful women they are all!!! I am mixed breed also… I can surely identify with all that was said…. I am Native American Creek Indian and African American- so people always want to know…What are you mixed with? Like I am some kind of recipe … lol-- right? Here is what has helped me with a variety of ethnicities…God created you in his image…you as a person had no pick or say so in what you were going to look like but, God did- and he has made no mistakes!!!!…You are all so beautiful--- please---please embrace your natural and inner beauty!!! Love this video. Sonya is such a great mother. She is a rock! She is a strong, wise and loving woman. You can tell that Sonya came from a good family with very strong family values. She held things down. It was not easy raising three kids and being involved in all of their activities while dad had to be away at work most of the time. But she did it! Sydel was definitely "daddy's girl" when she was little. You can tell that she loved her daddy to death and daddy doted on her too. Now as a woman, Sydel appreciates her mother even more, now that she understands a whole lot more, as a grown woman. Both are much closer and share more, as two adult women. Dell is a lucky man. He married the right woman, as the mother of his kids. Compared to the fake, entitled, classless women that we see on those fake baskeball "realty shows" on tv today, Sonya is in a whole league of her own! The woman exudes class and is "no drama" and she is a true mother and woman. I love the part where she said that when her children were growing up, she let them know that she was the parent, not a friend or buddy. We miss that from parents nowadays. You two ladies are beautiful. If we didn't know, we'd think you are sisters. You look like sisters now.

Ok, this was honestly a lot more than I thought it would be. This vid popped up as a suggestion as I was searching old basketball games and I clicked to watch maybe 1-2 minutes as a fluke but ended up watching it entirely. Excellent and super relaxed Q & A with surprisingly good answered from both ladies. I'm a guy with 2 young children and was hoping you might do more of these because people out there could truly use this sort of wisdom. You two could probably travel the country and do parenting seminars together. I'd love to submit a couple questions but I'll look for a future episode of it happens. Anyhow, keep it up, great stuff.

Didn't think I would watch the whole video, but I did and it was really good. Your mom and I are a lot alike as mothers. I'm very old school. I actually learned how to relate to my daughter in certain situations by watching this. I have a 17 year old. Stay close to your mama Sydel, she's a very sober and wise woman. Thanks for this video.
