My mom wore a white dress to my wedding. My mom was absolutely stunning. Yet, being a fuller figure woman, she had low self-esteem and never felt comfortable or pretty. When we went dress shopping, she found an amazing dress to try on. However, the sample was white. When my mom walked out in this dress, she was glowing and absolutely beautiful. I had never seen her smile so big or twirl around the way she did that moment. I cried harder seeing her in that dress then I think she did seeing me in mine. lol. When we were told they didn’t have any other colors available in her size she immediately went to look for another dress. I forced her to wear that dress. Tragically my parents and brother lost their lives not long after. Words cannot express how grateful I am that I didn’t let silly traditions or strangers opinions affect my decision. Nothing makes me happier than watching the video or looking at them pictures and seeing how beautiful and confident she looked. We need to keep our opinions to ourselves and allow others to be happy. Life is hard enough on its own, we don’t need to make big deals out of nonexistent problems. This wedding was for their family. If their family was happy, why on earth would anybody else have a problem?

As an Asian, I agree. I find it mind boggling how in the US, it would be an unforgivable sin if another woman wears white on someone else's wedding. Coz here in Asia, or maybe just in my part of Asia, Philippines, it is automatic that the center of attention is the bride, it's impossible to upstage the bride and groom. I've seen some weddings where the mothers of both the bride and groom sometimes were wearing whites and it's no big deal. The commentator made it about jealousy but the issue is not her beauty but rather the dress she chose. Completely inappropriate for an American wedding. She had her cleavage showing, almost her entire back showing, and she wore a train and was holding a bouquet. Nothing wrong with her dress but definitely a problem with her wearing it at a wedding event. Especially her daughter's wedding

The mother's dress with the veil in the back was not appropriate. It's the veil in the back, and it looked like the mother was trying to be in competition with her daughter. Sorry mom, but not a good look. Get that veil off and let your daughter be the bride, the only one with the veil. It didn't look right, plain and simple ....if it did, the post wouldn't be on here, and there would be no discussion about it.

It's not about technically "being" upstaged as a bride but rather more so about the other person "trying" to upstage the bride and she definitely looked like she was trying to upstage her considering what she chose to wear. If she wasn't trying to upstage her daughter, she would not have broken every rule in the etiquette wedding book

Oh please. My mother wore a bright white sequined three-quarter length gown on my wedding. I gasped when I first saw it and my father without missing a beat said “it’s already purchased. It’s not being returned.” Like they already knew how I was going to react. Pretty messed up.

that bride has always had a beautiful mother. i’m sure she is very proud of her mom. and we moms have to teach our daughters to be strong and independent before we encourage them to marry. throwing out traditional stereotypes for older moms and daughters as well is a must.

Wow that's crazy. I was at a wedding where mom wore what appeared to be white and I thought that was rude until I was told the Bride/Daughter chose that dress for her mom. Once I heard that, I was like, case closed. If the daughter wanted it, that is all that matters. I'm sure the daughter would have said something if she didn't approve.
