Technically they weren't just practicing for 3 years. They were trainees, and some of the members, such as RM, J-Hope and Suga were trainees for 3 years. However, members like Jungkook, Jin and v were trainees for 2 years and Jimin was a trainee for about 1 1/2 years under Big Hit. (However, some members spent years as underground rappers or dancers and some also spent a little time as trainees with other companies or in singing competitions, etc. before joining Big Hit. So when you take into consideration everything they did to become BTS, they spent a lot longer "practicing" then 3 years ;D) As a trainee you don't necessarily start out in a group, you work on your skills and prove to your company that you have what it takes to be a star and then they decide to place you in a group. During their trainee days several of the members were backup dancers and unknown ft. singers/rappers and actors on other companies' artist's MVs and live performances. But there is far more than just "practice" as a trainee. To become a trainee, companies hold auditions or sometimes they see someone on the street and recruit them to audition for them. After auditions, if the company sees potential in someone, they are then invited to join the company's trainee program -- which doesn't necessarily mean they will ever actually debut or become a star. They have to prove they have what it takes and they work to gain all the skills they need before they even are put in a group. As a trainee, kids, some as young as 10 years old, live, work and train with with the company in the hopes of some day debuting as an Idol in a Kpop group, band or as a solo artist. These kids train for years (anywhere from a few months to as many as, on average, 7 years) learning singing, rap, dancing, acting, public speaking, multiple foreign languages, modeling and manors, etc. before the company decides they have finally gained the skills they need to debut. And once a company decides a trainee is ready they then put a bunch of trainees together to form a group. Once a group is formed the group spends several more months or even years training as a group And finally, if the group is lucky, the company will decide the group is ready to debut. Once its decided a group is going to debut, the group is given a name, members' stage names are created and the group's style and concept is given to them. Then they start to learn the group's first official song and choreography. Then after all of this, the group is finally able to debut with their first song, MV, and public performances. This whole process is what makes Kpop so epic and why Kpop is on such another level compared to all other music industries around the world. Once a group debuts and it is official, the members continue to live together for many years -- Its a way for the company to ensure the group forms a close bond and it also helps the company save money. If you work and live together 24/7 its pretty hard not to form a close brotherhood or sisterhood bond and become like family. Most idols say they see their members more than they do their own families. Members of groups usually live in dorms or apartments all together, and companies often own or rent whole buildings, and several of the company's groups will live in the same building. When you are a trainee, and even for several years after debut, the company pays for everything a trainee needs to learn to become an Idol. So Idols work for many years just to pay off their debuts with the company. So, it takes Idols a long time some times before they actually start making money for themselves. That's why the more popular a group can get, as quickly as possible, the better because then they can pay off their debuts and start making a salary of their own. When you watch these MVs and everything involved with Kpop, it looks like Idols must be rich and famous, but a lot of the time, unless a group is extremely popular and has been around for a while, they probably aren't very rich. The money they make from record sales, concerts and appearances, etc. is going back to the company. Some people who don't really know Kpop say they don't like or understand it because Kpop is so "manufactured", but if you really get to know Kpop you will find that, yes, there is a structured system, but all these kids have a lot of talent and dedication and they have to have a passion for everything they do, or they wouldn't have made it in the industry. Just because its not a group of friends who got together on their own and formed a band or group and then were picked up by a record label, the way the music industry usually works in the U.S, doesn't mean they don't deserve the admiration and respect for all their hard work and dedication. Thanks. :D I just wanted to clarify that there is far more than just "practice" that goes in to being a trainee. :D A few of the BTS members actually spent a long time trying to become a trainee and they auditioned for several companies and even spent some time as trainees under other companies, but in the end they were cut and that is how they ended up with Big Hit. The trainee life is pretty cutthroat.

None of us could at first either, especially in the dance practices that are filmed at the new studio which are further out. I used to always mix up Jin and Jimin for some reason. I feel like your mom would love the Spring Day practice if you haven't shown it to her yet. It's contemporary dance that really tells the story of the song.

Because Jimin was accepted into BigHit in early May 2012 (confirmed by Jimin himself on an episode of Run BTS) and he actually entered the BigHit dorms on 15 May 2012 to live with the other BTS members and start his training (confirmed in an official Hip Hop Monsters comic).

RM trained for almost 3 years, Suga and J-Hope for 2 and a half years, Jungkook for 2 years, Jin and V for almost 2 years, and Jimin for a little over 1 year. So technically, Jimin was the only member not to be trained for "years".

They've used several different choreographers. Besides their Performance Director (and in-house choreographer) Son Sung Deuk who choreographed much of their earlier stuff like Danger, Run and I Need U. Keone and Mari Madrid did Dope, Fire and parts of DNA (with Christopher Martin), V's Singularity and Blood Sweat and Tears (with the Quick Style Crew who did Save Me). Dylan Mayoral did J-Hope's Boy Meets Evil. Rie Hata did Mic Drop, Anpanman and Airplane part 2. There are others but these are a few, I tried to find the ones for stuff your Mom had seen.

All of them had different training periods. RM and Suga started in 2010. J-Hope joined at the end of 2010, Jungkook beginning of 2011. Jin was cast after he has entered uni, around beginning of 2011 as well. V was right after Jin, so he started in mid 2011. The last person to join Big Hit was Jimin, who joined mid 2012 and only trained a year before debuting

They signed first as trainees to their entertainment company, Big Hit. The first members of BTS were RM, Iron, Kidoh, Supreme Boi (and a couple of others I can’t think of atm). RM was the maknae and not the leader of this iteration. This was going to be a straight hip hop/rap group. Luckily for us, this was not the final line up as everyone but RM left the group for other things. (Except Supreme Boi - who stayed with Big Hit as a producer). Bang Shi Hyuk (founder/CEO of Big Hit) recruited more trainees and this is how we got J-Hope, Suga, Jin, Jungkook, Taehyung and Jimin (in order of joining BTS. Jin and Jungkook joined at almost the same time so there is some back and forth on which one was first). When these kids (and they are kids - Jungkook joined in the early part of 2011 which would have made him just over 13 years old) become trainees, they leave their homes/parents and live in a dorm with all the other trainees. Once the lineup for BTS was established, they moved from the trainee dorm to one specific to just BTS. This dorm was so small that all 7 of them slept in one room. 3 sets of bunk beds and a single bed in one room if you can imagine. So when Jin says things like he raised Jungkook or they talk about being brothers-they are not just being hyperbolic. They have lived and worked together for years. So yeah - thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

LOL they don't just learn these moves for the video. if you think its a lot to remember for these videos, imagine how many routines they have to remember for a concert. Kpop concerts last 3 to 4 hours and most groups perform 25 to 30 songs and almost all of the songs will have choreography. Plus, in between performances they also have audience interaction times and prerecorded videos (VCRs) that they have prepared that tell a story or set up the next set of songs, etc. which the group has to film ahead of time. LOL its not like these dances are just for videos -- they are performed live, too. :D

I never get sick of them and actually there are times when I work out while watching them because seeing them inspires me to get my butt in shape oh and to attempt to dance as well lol.
