The 1st soloist (blond) is Scott Hoying. He is primarily a baritone but has a very large range going in both directions. The 2nd soloist (brunette, beard, knitted cap) is Avi (pronounced AH- vee) Kaplan and their original basso profobdo, although he also has a Very wide range, as you heard in this song. Whenever Avi sings a solo part and a bass partneeds to be filled, Scott takes over. You can actually see this happening in their live performance of "Hallelujah". I believe some other considerate commentor left the link for you to access it. "A NOTE ABOUT THEIR BASS SINGERS: There has ONLY BEEN ONE CHANGE in PTX since it's inception....and that's been the bass singer. When Avi left amicably for personal reasons, he helped find Matt Sallee. It's been a perfect & seamless Fit ever since. And, again....Scott takes over bass duties whenever Matt is singing a solo & bass notes need to be covered. Next up was Kirsten (Kirsty Maldonado - sounds like thirsty. She has an impressiverange with whistle notes higher than Mitches!) and then Mitch Grassi (counter tenor I believe is his classification. You'll find he also has an amazing range that include whistle notes!) The thing to keep in mind about these 2 is they like to change their hair color & hair styles as well as their fashion styles. So don't be fooled into thinking there are, or have been, lots of changes in the group. Then there is the wonderful, one of a kind beatboxer named Kevin Olusola. He's hard to miss and hard to get confused with anyone else. He'll be the one whose mouth, lips & cheeks are moving at the speed of light, all the while his hands are clapping, slapping, snapping away while his feet stomp out a completely different beat than his mouth is! - They are all team players and all have a say in who sings what & in putting together the arrangements. They are a true community. They could teach us all how to give & take & create "Sweet harmony".

Actually Mitch is the ultra-rare adult male Alto. He can cover most of the tenor range, but the low notes he has to 'stretch down', but the fact he can sing the Alto and 'counter-tenor' range with incredible projected power makes him nearly unique. Remember the primary designations for vocal are SATB (Soprano Alto Tenor Bass). As a former 'choir boy' watching Mitch 'sky walk' his voice so effortlessly with power is just jaw dropping.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The members are Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range as heard during his solo); Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.

The last guy to sing, in the hat, is the tenor, although that is just because you have to put him somewhere, he actually has like either a 6 or 7 octave range, tops out at likeB7. If you want to see his ability, Him, and The first singer have a side channel, those two guys, and the girl have known each other since about the 8th grade, but the boys did a rendition of Defying Gravity from the broadway play Wicked (I call it Wizard of Oz Pt 2), it's kind of a joke presentation, but when Mitch hits that final note, you better be holding on to something. This was actually Scotts birthday, and for his present he wanted Mitch to sing that song, as it was his favorite song from the play, Now this is where you will experience what we call a "Mitch Slap", that is the face people make the first time they hear Mitch's ability, it's always funny for us to see, as we know what's coming. It's not anything bad, just some name that has developed in the last 10 years. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJWxhJxmbLlofbM

Normally, Avi, the guy with the beard, is the bass. However, when he takes the lead, Scott, the first guy, the tall blonde, sings the bass line. Every one of the five has a vocal range of at least five or six octaves, and that includes Kevin, the black guy who is also their beatboxer. The woman is Kirstie, and she has a wonderful mezzo-soprano and a tendency to belt quite a lot. They can all belt, but they are likely to do it in this order. Kirstie (almost certain in every song at least once), Scott, Mitch (the one in the hat with the angelic voice), Avi, and Kevin (who rarely features in the vocals other than occasional BV). That's a quick introduction to the group. We are Pentaholics. Just a side note. They've been guests in a non-competetive capacity on AGT. They were also on the Masked Singer. They appeared with Dolly Parton on her special and presented their cover of Jolene. They won a Grammy award for that, their third. They've also won for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies, their second nomination and second win. They were first nominated for Daft Punk Medley, and won that one as well. Recently they were nominated for a fourth Grammy for one of their albums. This time they came up short. They had a song from that album that many of us here felt should not only have been nominated, but should have won as well. That song was a cover of the Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli song The Prayer. Any of their songs that you see on video, they are capable of replication live. They don't release an official video until and unless they can perform it live. Others that you should watch would be Daft Punk Medley, Mary Did You Know, Imagine, Sound of Silence, Bohemian Rhapsody, 90s Dance Medley, Amazing Grace, Say Something, and many of their Christmas songs and spiritually structured numbers. That should keep you occupied for a bit as you begin your journey down the PTX rabbit hole. Welcome to the fun, Alice.

Btw - she has well over 150 covers & some originals available on KZbin & IMHO she is the best female singer that I have heard in my lifetime (& I'm 72 :). Thank you. And may GOD continue to watch over & bless Angelina Jordan.

Others have already mentioned Avi's gifted bass voice,and his departure from PTX and his excellent solo career...however,to answer your question...SCOTT their Baritone,fills in the Bass vocals when Avi is taking the lead.😊Scott takes over & fills in the Bass whenever needed.he has a great range,as does Avi,and all the members of this group.enjoy your new journey!!✌

Avi (beard) is the bass and in the studio he may well double track the bass when he also sings. I concert though, if he's singing the Scott (blonde) slides over into the bass line.

Fantastic reaction... I loved it! Avi does bass but live when Avi solos Scott does some bass lines.. Avi is the long hair and beard...
@seannovack38342 жыл бұрын
The videos are cut so that it's easier to keep track of the vocal arrangements. It's easier to tell that Scott takes over for Avi with that bass line, for example, if you are watching them sing. That B1b that Avi hits at the end there is absolutely amazing. I love watching people's reactions to that even more than Mitch's counter-tenor

watch them live. Scott and Avi trade places with the bass- when Avi (the long haired guy..) sings his solos, Scott (the blond) takes over. he's a true baritone.

If you cry on this one, you would love other Pentatonix songs for sure. I recommend "The Prayer" and "Amazing Grace" from them as well. But honestly, they have SO many songs, like 200 under their belt, so there is a lot for you to pick from!

To see how the group has matured over the years, please check out their live performance of this song from their December 2021 Evergreen Christmas tour. Their live performances of Hallelujah over the years are stunning (and I think even better than this great studio version.).

The first verse melody is sung by Scott Hoying, the Bass/Baritone/Tenor. Avi Caplan is singing the bass on the first verse. The second verse melody is sung by Avi Caplan, the bass, while Scott takes over the bass part. The members of Pentatonix do not fit the classic paradigm of vocal labels. Mitch Grassi has a seven octave vocal range. Classic vocal labels call him a natural countertenor, but he sings the full female soprano range with the purity of an angel. Pentatonix sings everything they do on video during live performances. There is NO over dubbing, though there is masterful mixes on all their songs. They are simply the best acapella group on the planet today. They have many billions of views on their videos for a reason. I suggest you react to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy next. You will get a good feel for who is singing which parts. This is the only time a Grammy has been given to an acapella group singing a song with no words.

l would strongly suggest you listen to Pentatonix melody of Daft Punk songs, it is an audio & visual delight. Some background if/when you do, they hired a video company to make the video but it dropped out at the last minute so they made the video themselves in the kitchen & closet of two of their homes for (iirc) $450 and it won an award. Loved your reaction & hope you will have their Daft Punk melody on youtube as l am sure your will enjoy that enormously & l hope to see your reaction to their work on the melody.

A lot of people already explained the Members of the Group, so all I just want to say is that there are 2 other Acapella Groups that are at the top of Acapella Music besides Pentatonix, and those 2 are called "Home Free" and "Voiceplay", personally I rather listen to Pentatonix and Home Free, but the Bass of Voiceplay is like Food with the right amount of Salt in it. He sings with Voiceplay, but he also does his own thing on his own Channel and I gotta say it's impressive, please React to more Pentatonix as well as Home Free and Voiceplay please☺.
@joeb41422 жыл бұрын
If Pentatonix specializes in Christmas music, Voiceplay belongs to Halloween 🎃 Geoff is an amazing singer and as he showed in his interview with Elizabeth Zarhoff (The Charismatic Voice) is a warm, funny, intelligent dude you’d love to just hang out with and talk music. Voiceplay’s new Halloween vid is just fantastic but I’ll let y’all find it lol. p.s. Pentatonix is probably my favorite of the three groups but hey, it’s almost Halloween 👻

From what I know this song is around 800 years old. The beginning lyrics atleast are about Samson and Delilah. Samson strength was like Hercules, even greater! Or were they even the same man possibly! Similar stories
