Hi Sas, I’m Italian and actually this is not weird at all! Peas are not exactly traditional, but carrots are part of the soffritto (with onions and celery too) that it’s cooked in oil at the beginning of the recipe! What it’s not really traditional here is the tomato sauce: true and actual bolognese sauce has none of that! They put a tiny amount of tomato paste and then the result at the end is a very thick sauce with almost no tomato… I don’t know why the rest of the world thinks ragù alla bolognese is just meat and tomato passata: it’s a *meat* sauce. It has pork, beef and veal meat, than some sausage and pancetta, onions, carrots, celery, bay leaf, pepper, juniper berries, a little nutmeg, tomato paste and then my mom usually adds every kind of leftover cold cut/charcuterie like mortadella (bologna), prosciutto and similar. I know this is your mum’s recipe and you love it this way because it reminds you of your childhood, so keep doing it this way! Hope I’ve been helpful 🥰

In Italy we always put carrots in pasta! We make the "soffritto", with onion and carrots and celery finely chopped, it's like the "base" of the "ragù", which is tomato sauce with grounded meat. It's a must. And someone put the peas in the sauce too!

Sas, forget vegemite.. it’s a worse version of Marmite. Toast some sourdough, put loads of butter then a little bit of marmite. It’s really salty so less is more! Don’t cover the toast like peanut butter lol. The trick is buttering the toast right out of the toaster so it soaks in the bread. Honestly a life changing product for me since moving to the UK! I think people who don’t enjoy it probably didn’t prepare it properly and ate it out of a spoon 🤣

a Reuben sandwich is a thinly sliced corned beef sandwich with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut and they also put Russian dressing and normally it is fried on both sides of a rye bread. I totally suggest if you do not like corned beef right now you should put it in the Crock-Pot for about 8 hours with some cabbage and carrots and it is absolutely amazing when it falls apart. Some people make it and it is super tough. although corned beef is a super salty meat so I think that's why the Cabbage brings down the salt content a lot. Having Irish family was great and it is one of my favorite meals with white vinegar on top as well as homemade mashed potatoes on the side ❤❤❤❤
