**Tip for people like me with small hands. ** Not sure if anyone has said this already, but I've found it much easier to play the stretchy bit in Verse A at the ninth and 5th frets by just playing the open drone note A on the b string 10th fret with the pinky since its already on the 9th fret the note before. Instead of trying to hold my index finger on the 5th fret and stretch to play at the 9th at the same time.

There's also NOTHING WRONG with leaving notes out ENTIRELY if something is beyond your playing ability. Then as your playing improves, you can revisit old songs and try to add in more complex parts that you were unable to play before!

So another little hack, while trying to play that real "beefy" chord. I've found that I can live with the sound of the D string 6th fret and G string 4 fret (barre) just ringing out a second longer and skipping trying to make my pinky reach over to play the bass note on 7th fret E string. It makes that bit much more manageable for me. Obviously not everyone will agree with how it sounds but its much easier at the start. Also I just wanted to say thank you so much Tim Van Roy for posting these tutorials. I've been looking for a way to make Tommy Emmanuel's music accessible for someone with my lack of ability for a long time, and your lessons are the first ones I've ever tried that have really helped me learn one of his songs. I am eternally grateful and will now have to turn to your patreon page to finish learning Mombasa. Cheers and Merry Christmas!

I tried to learn this from Tommy video. But he went way to fast. Thank you for your concise spot on lesson. This is my new project. Thank you sir for taking the time to break this down for us non classical players. Beautiful piece of music from a special soul. This world needs more like Tommy Emmanuel

Trying to hold the pick and fingerpick at the same time is a whole new technique to me I've never done it before that's the only thing am struggling with
@TimVanRoy
@TimVanRoy Жыл бұрын
That makes sense Dean! Always make sure to play very light with the pick, as it is hard for the fingers to get the same volume if you are playing hard. Relaxing the pick attack will do wonders to relax the grip on the pick too. Good luck!

Very clear, except that perhaps my level is still too low. So I have to try something simpler, but it was a lot of fun.

Thank you so much for this incredible lesson, what’s your approach when tackling a new piece, do you work on it in 4-8 bar stages and make sure you got it solid before moving forward? Do you block you time up like work on it for 20-30min then take a break from it or do you just push through until you nail it?

You've learned several Tommy songs but I've only learned Angelina. I've chosen "Cowboy's Dream" as my second Tommy song but the palm muting he does is new and difficult for me. Actually, ALL his songs are above my level but they inspire me to learn new things. What do you consider to be his simplest songs, not that any are simple?

@@dynastyps Yeah, Stevie Blues is probably doable, but it's not the type of Tommy song I want to learn. The songs I like are in the category of Angelina, Rachael's Lullaby, Questions, and especially Mombasa ( I think Mombasa is really difficult)

Really close on all fronts. But the timing is wrong in the main melody with the triplet feel. You're one quarter note triplet off. You're adding 1/3 rd of a beat that isn't there. It strikes me as a bit crazy because this is super evident if you simply tap along with the down beat as you play that section. Not sure how you could miss this. I'm sure Tommy would agree, miss a note before you miss a beat. Rhythm is number one priority over everything else. Congrats on the channel, you've really put in the work. I often wonder how channels like this get away with using other people's copyrighted material. I imagine you've been in touch with Tommy's people as some point. Best of luck in the future!
@TimVanRoy
@TimVanRoy 10 ай бұрын
Thanks! I don't have any issues at all with criticism if it is laid out this politely 😉 I think the difference in expectation is at the base of the timing issue: I don't play that opening melody in triplets, but rather in eighth notes (starting on the second beat). Tommy seems to drag those notes a bit more towards a triplet these days, but I learned it off the original studio recording where it most definitely are eighth notes. This is also a very early video, and if I did this video now I probably would mention the way you are suggesting (with the triplet) too! And yes, we've been in touch with Tommy's team and even had take take down 90% of the original videos on the channel. But I was careful/stupid enough to get in touch with them really early on as I didn't want to redo my whole channel when it got bigger. But I can happily say that Tommy is not only aware of the work being done here, but is also very supportive of the lessons!
