Oh, yes, I love that Second reader. The stories are so real and they spark some interesting conversations. I can't believe the difference in my younger boys' vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension, and writing skills compared to that of my older kids before I knew about this curriculum. And this is so much easier than what I did with my older kids! On a side note, one of my little guys finished his reader and "graduated" to Lesson Book Two today. He was so excited to get "The Bear Book" and can't wait for it to get here. Thanks again, Sherry.

At the beginning of the school year I started using the McGuffey second reader with my second grader. She reads a lesson and then does copy work either from the Mcguffey's or from the Bible. I have her copy the same passage 4 days in a row. Next year we will probably add in dictation on day number 5. Then she also copies all of the spelling words from that McGuffey lesson 2 times each day. (I often divide the spelling list into multiple weeks so as not to overwhelm her.) Each day she does one activity with the spelling list such as writing sentences, drawing a picture or coloring the words with colored pencils. I'm amazed at how her spelling has improved with this very simple method. I plan to have my oldest who is currently in 5th grade start the third reader this coming school year.

Hello, I love the way you teach. I have a question for you, what translation did you use for Bible teaching for kids of 6-7 years old? We are are a family that has English as a second language, and I am skeptical about using KJV. We don't know if another version would be too much of a watering down.

You might try the NKJV, which sticks close to the KJV but the syntax is a bit simpler and the "thees" and "thous" are replaced.

Hi Sherrie! I started the second reader a little late with my soon to be 4th grader. But I want to do the entire second reader to make sure there are no holes. However, I think the level 3 notebook is better suited for her, age wise, even though we aren’t half way through the second reader. Do you think it’s ok to use this book with the beginning part of the second reader?

Would you say that McGuffeys are enough when it comes to spelling? Will learning to spell correctly eventually click through things like copy work and dictation. I have a child in the original second reader.

It depends on the child. For most it will be, but for a few it will help to add in some basic spelling rules and how to deal with prefixes, suffixes, etc.

How do you progess through McGuffey's with the different versions? The originals through the Second Reader and then revised from the Third Reader on? Do you come back to the original Third and Fourth Readers later?

Actually, no. They are interesting reading, but I don't use them for homeschooling.
