Using the moment area theorems to calculate slopes and deflections in a cantilever beam with a little more complicated loading than example 1...but still a cantilever.

Hey man, just wanted to thank you for this video along with all your videos. They have really helped clear up my muddled understanding of my structures classes that I barely attend because of how early it is/how difficult it is to understand. But you explain this stuff in a way that makes it so simple, keep doing what you do, you are greatly appreciate bro.

Why does the moment graph below the x axis and not on top of the x axis
@structurefree5 жыл бұрын
According to the sign convention that I use for internal loading, moments that cause compression at the bottom of the beam cross-section are considered negative internal bending moments.

So sorry. I am very confused as to why the 54 on your moment diagram is negative even though your sign convention says anticlockwise is positive. Thank you :)
@structurefree10 жыл бұрын
The shear and moment diagrams use an internal positive sign convention. Equilibrium equations use a global reference frame where counter clockwise is positive.
@AnandSingh-md8os10 жыл бұрын
MA is 54KNm positive for this sign convention
@yoshitasahishnaa9 жыл бұрын
Anand Singh The anticlockwise moment is by the fixed end. As in that's how the support... in this case fixed...restrains the clockwise moment of the beam. The BMD is drawn for the beam. Hence accordingly its shown negative as it is clockwise.

Sir, i just want to clarify, -MA+18-(6x6)=0, answer is -18kN-m...it was being thought in school that clockwise is positive and counterclockwise is negative or if vice versa the answer is still the same..but there the answer is -54kN-m..i'm sorry, that is so confusing..

i am not sure when choosing the centroid , which side to start from, you were mentioning fat ad skinny side , I am still confused about it lol
@jaeseow780510 жыл бұрын
Think about it this way. If you were to place the triangle on say, a ruler, and wanted it to be perfectly balanced and level, where would you place the ruler? It would be closer to the fat side to accomodate for all the extra fat. Same principle applies. The centroid (note "center") of the triangle is 1/3 from the fat side to accomdate the extra fat, or 2/3 from the skinny side because its skinny.

Why does the unit of θ B kn.m2 ? shouldn't it be in radians, since it is an angle?
@structurefree9 жыл бұрын
marian joyce macadine if we substituted values and units for E and I, the units would come out to radians. i hope that helps.

There is a major problem in finding the angle at B, he didn't include the area of the rectangle under the curve, only the triangle!

My professor had a beam with “4i” written under one section of the beam and “i” written under the other half of that beam; would that be an example of when the curvature diagram would not bead straight forward because EI changes??

how is it -675, when I got -729 in my calculator?
@dd271111 жыл бұрын
thank you, you champ!
@muhammadadel52567 жыл бұрын
You had divided the moment by EI and said that the curvature now is the same as the moment BUT I think this is not true because the moment diagram is a function and dividing it by some value will cause changes to the slopes .... changing tthe shape of the diagram itself ! Only subtraction and addition are allowed with a transition of the curve but keeping the same shape
