It's because its not quite right. It is a bit more complicated than that. He's not taking into account how these forces vary along the length of the beam. There are actual equations that involve the position (x) that generate the actual curves instead of arbitrary lines he drew.

@@armandmatossian2081 The equations are represented by the graphical method. Split the beam and do the analytical method and you will find the same results. At the end of the day, the relationship between sheer and moments is an integral so what he does here to skip doing the cut and check method of moment drawing is correct. The integral of a flat line is a triangle as the area increases linearly with distance. The integral of a slope is a curve etc. People should learn both methods as they are equally applicable.

Doing refresher stuff for my PE in structural. Focusing on reinforced concrete (have been using programs that do this for me and other engineers, but know I will need to do these diagrams myself) and am absolutely loving this. Bam! Wooop! Love how you do that. Keeps it interesting and it is obvious you like doing it. Thanks a bunch for the refresher!

It really helps when lecturers state the relationships, how to set up the solution diagram/s for the interaction of those relationships and then how to solve the problem/question. I’ll be adopting the three levelled diagram when calculating the shear-bending diagram. Thanks Jeff.
