I would just like to share something a year since I've completed this test as an update. I want to hand back my first, shred the certificate and retract my title as an 'advanced rider'. I simply don't want it. I embarked on this IAM journey to try and encourage younger riders to take up training that might hopefully save their life. Whilst I enjoyed the training and the test itself, whether or not you think I deserved the first/pass - it's irrelevant to me. The outcome could have been a fail, and that's fine. I would have shared it anyway because my channel is about reality, not curated perfection. I am not driven by the ego side of being an 'advanced rider' with a holier than thou attitude. I just wanted to maybe learn something useful... pass or fail. The abuse... from... OTHER advanced riders... mainly National Observers has been frequent and condescending since I posted my test online. I honestly wish I'd never bothered. For all the effort that went into the filming and editing and subtitling all the episodes, it was not worth it for it all to be undone by this unpleasant and very vocal boys brigade. I say that because if I was considering doing IAM as a random person and came across the nasty comments that I've faced since doing the test... It would put me right off wanting to get involved. I often wonder if they give the wheeliers, the reckless riders and the speeders of KZbin the same energy? Hmmm, who knows. Thanks for listening to my TED TALK 🤣

I can't help but think you are being subjected to a big helping of mysoginy. I doubt this abuse would be happening if you were a middle aged, middle class man. (Feel free to correct me if female IAM observers have been weighing in, I've not seen you share any) I find it disgusting in all honesty. Please keep making the content, it's great 👍

@@djkitchen982 I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. I personally think a lot of it is caused by misogyny (some of them might not realise they’re doing it) but it is misogyny all the same. I’m fortunate that the National Observers in the group I passed my test with were brilliant. They might pass a few friendly pointers on a ride out, but that’s where it stops. None of this patronising misogynistic nonsense that seems to grace social media these days. I opened my copy of the monthly IAM magazine yesterday.. and the fact that there’s an ad/article called something like ‘why have a stair lift when you can have a real lift?’ says it all really. Maybe some of the old guard feel threatened by younger riders, especially female ones. The IAM really need to clean up their image if they want to attract and retain a younger membership. Otherwise the IAM will be no more in a couple of decades time.

That fact you've been made to feel this way for essentially trying to make yourself a better rider and spread awareness for safer riding, is utter horsesh*t. The other advanced riders who should be advocates for these qualifications have treated it as a level of elitism and in turn, put many people off doing the qualification themselves. Myself included. Bit of an own goal... Keep it up Kate, I'll continue doing wheelies on GS's to keep some of those 🔔 ends busy! ❤❤

Hi Kate. I'm an IAM rider. I'm sorry you have faced criticism from other IAM members. They should be ashamed of themselves. We are trying to move away from an elitist attitude and put the bed the stereotype of it's full of old blokes in high Vis. I hope you got something out of doing your test, and from what I can see you fully deserve your f1rst. We should be encouraging people to become safer, better riders. Not slating them. Well done!

Well done kate, I am an IAM observer and it wasnt long ago that i went through the training and did masters test last year as well. Its so hard, and we all make errors and i think people forget that. There is no such thing as a perfect ride, but your ride looked great, and this has been a great series to watch. What really annoys me about the negative comments, is not only the way people have been towards you but also forgetting that they too do not ride perfectly and in addition to this, you were honest with your ride and editing, which i think is fantastic. You could have made it look perfect, but you were honest. Really love the video and the channel and well done agian. Best wishes Dave

8:57 great sequence, super editing to show it all. The look ahead. The look through the corner. Road positioning, the right distance to be ready to overtake. The overtake. The left lifesaver, then the move back in to your lane. So nice. Well done on the pass. It's got me interested in doing it now!

Just watched this, congratulations on the pass. In a previous life I achieved Police Class 1 advanced, I was also an IAM observer for a while, semi retired now and have been a DAS instructor for 10 years. We often find competent riders succumb to the 'test pressure' and make daft mistakes by overthinking, we encourage a commentary ride when starting off as it really focuses concentration on the task. The other thing is riders dwell on what they perceive is a mistake, don't, put it behind you and move on., just the other week a lady rider was told she had passed and like you went', "Have I?" The examiner said, " Yes, but we can go out again if you want!" LOL! Onwards and upwards now, you never stop learning on bikes, you could be an IAM observer some day and I've been riding since Queen originally released Bohemian Rhapsody, work that one out. Stay Safe!!

What a fantastic video series on the IAM training, Kate. Thank you so much for sharing that. I was pleased to see you share your test as well and was papping it for you when you thought you'd failed, bless you. I started my IAM training in August 2022 and will be heading for test this Spring (fingers crossed), so it was great to be able to see your progression, learn some things and genuinely feel some of the emotions, having experienced similar things myself. Massive congratulations on your pass and your first - very well deserved. What I like is that you're not arrogant, always willing to learn and are a bloody good rider. Don't be too hard on yourself, though. I appreciated the collaboration with Reg Local - what a privilege to be able to see both sides of the coin! Keep the content coming. :) Tom (Moray, Scotland).

Happened to me on my second attempt at getting an HGV licence, nearly sent my Examiner through the windscreen (no seat belts in trucks back then) when I misjudged where a Learner car was going on a roundabout. I was convinced I'd failed again and stopped being nervous, just drove how I'd been doing at the end of my training. I was amazed when the Examiner said I'd passed and he thought the learner car was going the other way as well.

@@medler2110 Very true that, I did the same, passed my second test after making what I thought was a fairly bad blunder and then must have relaxed as I thought the test was effectively over so I there was no point worrying about it any more. That was over 40 years ago. To this day I'm convinced that I drove a lot better on my first test and should not have failed it.

Fantastic Kate and well done getting a richly deserved first. I did mine five years ago and it totally modified the way I ride, giving such confidence as you read the road ahead so differently. The test is a extremely nerve wracking experience but gives us the chance to demonstrate all we have learned. When I have fewer time constraints I will be looking into doing my observer training, it’s not only amazing to develop but to also pass on those skills. Congrats Kate.

It was good to see the nerves of the situation and the heightened sense of failure when something doesn't quite go to plan, it makes you acutely aware of every little thing, but to the observer the perspective is different, as shown in the result. I thought you did well to keep it together when you thought you had failed and it was great to see the process being shown following first hand experience rather than hearsay as well.

Nice series of videos of your IAM test. Nice work. It was good to watch and hear your comments as well as the walk thru of things after the rides. This is something i do myself, I judge my own riding and how i perform. I have also been riding with friends to see how they are doing it. And being open to give constructive critics and receive constructive critics. For me riding a motorcycle is demanding of the driver and therefore a constant learning experience. We ride with different mental mindsets, weather conditions and different traffic conditions and that is why riding can be challenging sometimes and other times feel like a breeze. Again thanks for sharing your experiences and letting others see how it could be done and what your experience is out of this. Lastly congrats for doing a good job 👍👍

Oh, the drama! Bravo!!! I only got my full licence ten months ago but weirdly miss the adrenaline rush of training and tests, so this IAM malarkey is very tempting… I remember thinking that I had goofed my Mod 2 within 60 seconds of leaving the test centre and it’s all I could think about for the next forty minutes - so I was so rooting for you at the end there! Alas my examiner WAS a wind-up merchant, he had a reputation for it, my instructor even warned me about him beforehand - “if he’s shaking his head and tutting at the end of the test it means you’ve passed” - but I still fell for it - the git! 😂 Congrats!

Hi Kate, I watched the examiners vlog last night and yours just now. well done you. Great to see someone young and confident. Best of all with a I want to learn attitude. The first one of yours that I watched was the on board GS 1250 round the other side of Pately Bridge. I recognised the roads. But was struck by how you did not hang about and made progress all the time. I was impressed without knowing that you had done all these other vlogs. Im in the middle of deciding whether to buy a GS. Im only 5ft 7. My last BM was R1150RT. It was awkward and heavy. Ok once moving. What ive learnt from your excellent on boards vids. Is the sound of the engine and I can easily see how much more responsive the BMs are now compared to my old 1150. You have converted me. Cannot wait to get hold of one.Ill be watching more. Well done again.

IAM core principles seem the same between the various examiners and observers but inconsistent when it comes to what they want to see. Lifesaver checks for example at every every change of speed and position is a very old fashioned method and is considered unnecessary, use them when they are required (turning right into a junction, pulling into another lane for overtake on dual carriageway/motorway etc). Generally good rear observation (using mirrors) is sufficient keeping your eyes and head where they need to be, pointing in the direction the motorbike is going. Disclaimer: I am not an IAM examiner or observer but I am an IAM member so been through the process.

It was so interesting to watch the test from both the examiners and the driver's perpective (or rider in this case), and I was honestly nervous for you! So pleased to see you get the first place ranking, it has inspired me and I'm sure many others too. Brilliant.

Excellent, well done Kate. I did wonder as you went for that overtake, but it clearly didn’t worry John as much as it did you. I convinced myself that I’d failed my IAM test about mid way through, so maybe we inflate little mistakes to seem bigger than they are. Again, congratulations.

Well done Kate! I am just an associate but I didn't think you failed where you thought you did. I would have chosen a bit different positioning a few times and we are told not to cross the line to the oncoming traffic's just to have even better visibility because it exposes the rider, but this might have been a recent change. Either way thanks for sharing this!

Very well done Kate! There's nothing worse than that feeling of dread when you think you've thrown it away. I see 'Reg Local' was your examiner - I sometimes watch some of his vids.

Wow Kate awesome stuff! Im like you, being negative after one little mishap and thinking I've blown it now. I was keen to do the IAM some years ago but one thing led to another and 20 years later and being so hooked on track that I have invested in Cal Superbike school. Got my level 3 in May 2023. IAM is def a good call for those that ride 90-100% on road. I ride 90% on track so that's why I've opted for CSS. Your bike insurance premium will benefit from this so good on you girl👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Well done. I did my IAM eighteen years ago and it was the best thing I ever did in terms of safety. The examiner was a police rider trainer, so keeping speed limits were essential. He said it’s the best ride he had in years, which gives credit to my Observer, who said when I told him “well you listened”. My Observer used to say that whether I passed or failed was not important as long as I am safe. Not a ride goes by that I am not mindful of the IPSGA model and best mantra IMHO is: space and time, space and time. I always recommend it. I’m not that keen on group rides, but I have a biker buddy who is also IAM trained so we keep an eye on each other’s riding. Can’t help but laugh, your video took me back to all the nerves I felt too doing that exam.

Like you I thought it was unlikely to be a pass, certainly not a First, but that's the unfortunate variability of the Tester system. Keep on practicing the System.and make friends with position 1.

Thanks Mike! You just have to apply to system which is IPSGA and anything is possible. I certainly wasn't expecting a first but I was happy with how I rode overall looking back at it! 😊

Never any doubt, once you got your nerves under control, I'd would be the same. The bit where you thought you'd failed, I liked the fact the car driver looked at you as you did your check. Well done 👏 👏👍🏍

Well done Kate. Never in any doubt as far as I’m concerned as just like everything else you do, you put your heart and soul into it. You only doubted yourself due to test nerves and that should never go away. Your examiner was right the perfect ride does not happen. I try to be perfect every day when riding and every day I fail but the issue is confidence and competence in equal measure. Once again, well done. See you soon 👍👍👍
