From the filmmakers of 'MASKED', 'Still Me' follows the story of a non-binary teenager (Bailey). After coming to terms with their identity it's time for them to come out at school and navigate what this means for their social life. However, this proves harder than they anticipate and Bailey is faced with a choice between social ridicule or the closet. Luckily, Bailey makes a new friend named Zach.
‘Still me’ - Starring Alanah Parkin (The Grand Scheme, Blackwood) & Kelsie Adelaide (MASKED, Flunk)
'Still Me' was created in conjunction with the Knox Rainbow Youth Action Group. The project is proudly supported & funded by Knox City Council, YACVic & the Victorian State Government.

Man, you people have been sold up shit creek on a lie. Your gender identity doesn't matter, but you've been tricked into thinking that you need to obsess over it and create all these smoke and mirror costumes and theatrics in pursuit of some unatainable complete validation. You shouldn't be wasting one second of your time on God's earth worrying that because you like something that isn't completely gender typical that that means you have to go on this wild hunt for more labels to apply to yourself. No, you're not special in that. Plenty of men and women like gender atypical things without engaging in this bizarre theatrical production of gender identity.

@@godseed7984 well sometimes people don’t like themselves. They can’t make themselves feel valid. So they need others to tell them they are. But. We all are valid. If it’s not hurting anyone. Why should it matter? We should focus on having fun in life and making sure we enjoy it while it lasts. We only get one and we should enjoy who we are. Even if people think it’s a mental illness or unnatural or stupid or whatever they want to call others. But really. We’re all just people trying to understand ourselves on this big blue and green rock and that’s all.

@@polarcorpuscle2941 lol you don't get the point because you don't feel what others feel. There are tomboys and feminine men but there are people that don't fit into those categories either. Some people don't feel gender. They're just making themselves more comfortable by being their selves. This overly binary system makes people uncomfortable.

Despite the anguish that non-binary, gay or other people suffer, they are lucky to have the LGBTQ community. At least, they know that they are not alone and that there are always people there to listen to them and sympathise with them. Not so long ago, LGBTQ groups did not exist and people who were non-binary and not heterosexual would be told to pull themselves together and be quiet.

As an Enby, I can confirm, the separating boys and girls thing is HELL. I've even gotten bad panic attacks in P.E for it at school, and had speed-walk to the restroom, just to cry. I'm glad that there's been more representation of Non Binary people, and it's good representation. Wish I could've had this kind of representation for when I was a kid :')

I’m so glad that there’s good representation now too and it’s more talked about in school environments. I got to a “girl’s” school (it’s called that but there are some people that are non-binary and transmasc there) so I don’t have to go through the separating thing but I know how hard that must be. All of my teachers just say “ladies”, “girls” and just tons of gendered terms and it’s a bit difficult. Tbh my school is not that bad with homophobia+transphobia (apart from a few instances) and half of the school would fight you for it. I hope you’re doing ok ❤️ I’m sorry you had to go through a bad school experience, I hope you’re doing better now

My skin began to crawl. I felt their pain. I'm genderfluid, and my pronouns are He/Him and They/Them. I feel what they had been feeling, no fitting in anywhere. Ridicule thick on your shoulders. Your eyes go dark. You feel the world hit you in the neck. It feels like nobody cares about you. When the truth is, there is always someone who will stand up for you. Make you believe in yourself. And who you are is never something you should be killed for. To hurt is to know that pain. The pain of people crushing your identity. Only because they feel entitled. And to feel separate from the world. I just want them to know, I understand completely.

I live in Sweden and most public toilets are non-genderal (can you say that?) and I as a woman don't want to meet a man in there. I came up with this idea to have two different rooms but one fore *Men* and the other for *Everybody else* I got this idea when a debate occurred where "men" were afraid of meeting LGBT, transgender or transvestite at the toilet. And some LGBT people didn't feel comfortable to use either toilets. I would be comfortable in using the *Everybody else* for sure and LGBT, trans- or non binary people would be welcome too. My experience is that It's mostly "men" that have issues about LGBT-people, I think. "men" means in this case heterosexual men (that refuses to think twice about this matter).

What saddens me most is the portrayal of the school. I’m quite sure this may well reflect what horrors still happen in many places, but I work in a school in which we are respectful of all genders and have supported children transitioning and expressing their identity beyond the binary. I wish it was the case everywhere. Great film. Should be shown at every school in staff training.

So overtime I started changing myself to fit in the point was i never did, and I never will. The moment I moved schools i realised how amazing it feels to just be myself again without being judged

I'm not sure I'll ever understand non-binary, or gender fluidity, and other stuff in the realm of that. But this was a great film that shows just let people be who they want to be. It doesn't affect anyone else to let someone be who they want to. The hardest thing for me to wrap my head around is the fact that they/them is typically used as a plural.
@flimsyflame1251
@flimsyflame1251 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, English really isn't formed well for the nonbinary pronouns. But people do use they/them to refer to one person (obviously not as often as they are for plural). You probably do it unconsciously sometimes. (Maybe think of when you reference to a friends teacher, a lot of people immediately go to they/them cus teaching has become a lot more open to other genders. It is hard to see tho because so many occupations are still often viewed as gendered) Honestly a good way to practice it is to refer to everyone who you see, and who you don’t know the pronouns of as they/them. So if you see a person on the street wearing a nice dress and you think “oh wow, she’s got a nice dress on” just correct yourself and go “they’ve got a nice dress on” It’s one of those things that gets better the more you use it. I’m so glad for you though!! Just because a lot of people who don’t understand it fully go to invalidate it. Its really refreshing to see someone be accepting and not so difficult around it. As for non-binary, it’s just someone who doesn’t fit well within the gender binary. There’s this other thing called being Agender that could also be described as that, but I think that a good way to visualize it is think of a scale. Women on one side Men on the other. A non-binary person sits right in the middle (this is for gender identity btw, not how people express themselves). Agender is just some point completely off the scale. Obviously scales aren’t the best way of explaining it, but it helped me. Someone being gender-fluid just means that their gender identity changes. It can be kinda complicated to understand, but you’ve got the respect part down. Just don’t judge what people wear/do, and use the correct pronouns. You’ll be all set. Also thanks again for being really accepting. It’s so nice to see. (And a bit of disclaimer, but I don’t really know all too much about this stuff despite being a part of the community, so I may be wrong about it)

as a nonbinary person myself, i could absolutely relate to this even though i haven't yet come out to my classmates or extended family. its so irritating to have to conform to binary genders when that's what everyone knows you as, especially at school. i personally haven't changed my name even though its fairly masculine, simply because i havent found a gender-neutral name that i thought suited me or was similar enough to my given name. it just feels like youre limited to a society that can't accept you for who you are and i hate it. the general public needs to start recognising non-binary people more.

OK so as a Conservative the question Bailey asked "Why does my gender matter" hit me hard. They are right. Gender does not matter and it never should. People are who people are. I cannot actually fathom using "They/Them" pronouns when speaking to someone but I will use their name instead. I will accept someone for who they are. No one should ever have to feel like they are alone. The far right and the far left have done way to much damage. My only and biggest issue is our children. Children should never be forced to pick a gender and the parents should never involve themselves into the child being a gender that the parents want. A parent should only be there to offer a safe place for their child to explore who they are and come to their own determination and the parent to just accept it and love their child regardless. My son came to me and told me one time that he doesn't feel that he's attracted to either gender and then later on he told me he is attracted to both. I accept that. He is my son, and I love him. His best friend she identifies as Queer, and I accept that. Some people need to realize before they say ANYTHING to someone who has gender dysphoria that they have feelings too and when it all comes down to it, they are human. We are an imperfect machine and we all need to love and accept each other, no matter what. Just an opinion from one guy.

I’m gonna be honest, this story is amazing.. from a trans male that is still young, naive, and with an entirely homophonic/transphobic family..I love this, especially the misgendering and dead naming (I don’t love it but I understand it.), I used to be A certain name now, I’m Finn.. It’s for sure hard when teachers misgender, or dead name me and others. The amount of times I’ve cried because I’ve been confused, or unsure, or had a panic attack because of this, is insane. I couldn’t imagine a teacher doing that. I feel so bad for Bailey, they shouldn’t have to deal with that.. nobody should. Sometimes I do wonder if people think of me weirdly, or think I’m insane because of my mind knowing im something else than what I was born. But I want everyone reading this to know, your not alone. We are all together somehow and someway, in our hearts we are connected and are here for eachother when nobody can be. I love you all no matter what, im always here for everyone.. -Finn, trans, and happy. :)

Liked how this film portrays the anxiety and confusion of being nonbinary in a binary society. The part where the teacher wants to divide up the class by boys and girls is brilliantly accurate to various situations nonbinary persons find themselves in daily. I do think it is helpful , would like to see portrayed more often those who are out as nonbinary (Zach and their friends for example) not always androgynous or genderfluid in appearance. Only because it seems this confuses people accepting themselves as nonbinary that you have to look that part or others cannot accept/understand your gender identity. Society overall should be educated that not all who identify as nonbinary look a stereotypical way, not all feel the need to use gender neutral bathrooms. These things are individual because we are all our own selves. Altogether though a great film to share. Thanks!

Honestly, who does this hurt? How much does it cost anyone to use respective pronouns? How much does it cost anyone to respect how anyone identifies? Its not an effing choice. It's part of who we are. Each and every one of us. It is recognizing the reality of humanity. How much does is cost to give up preconceived notions on gender and sex? It's just a little effort. It's just a little bit of love. I cant stand not to take the time and effort to respect another person's particular gender. It's worth it. It makes a better world for everyone.

Man, gender dysphoria is the worst, but you just gotta keep going, keep pushing through it. Don't do what I did and just give up on the search for truth of self, stay on that journey of searching until you find who you think you are. Don't take what other people think or say into account, because at the end of the day, who gives a shit what their thoughts are? It's YOUR life. YOUR gender (or lack thereof). I hope to anyone who may see this that is going through the struggle of gender dysphoria that you find yourself soon. Have courage, stay strong. I believe in you ❤

I know this was posted 2 years ago and I'm late to the party so to speak, but I had to say something. I am a teenager questioning their gender identity and struggling a lot with it but I'm nearly 100% sure I'm not cis. My dead/birthname is Emily too and when I saw that I got rather emotional. This really touched me and made me feel seen. Thank you 💗

Explaining that they are still themselves even after dealing with school bullies is very relevant to me. I like this video.

The part with the LGBTQ club is so heartwarming, I'm Pansexual and at school, there's this boy that said all LGBTQ people should die/burn, and it made me feel a bit offended. Also when we were starting dance class he called me a Lesbian. Just because I have a heavy preference for women wouldn't make me a Lesbian. Even thought I'm not Enby, I really like this short film. Sorry of any of this has nothing to do with the film

@intriguing Woman Is it really hard to respect someone’s identity tho, that doesn’t need to be earned, if you can’t respect how someone identifies, that says a lot about your maturity level.

@intriguing Woman we grant everyone basic respect. We don’t go around disrespecting people because they didn’t earn it. Respecting someone as a fellow human is not something you have to earn. Respect people’s pronouns because it’s part of that basic respect we give everyone.

the main character's role made me feel so uncomfortable and resistive to my tears coming out. because i know how real it is. experienced this since ive been a small child. although i didnt get the panic attacks at the moments they did because i had gotten very good at conforming to being the male i was expected to be. chose not to question and think on my own as i already faced the scolding and shouts from parents for being even a bit inquisitive and critical. ive been an excellent people pleaser. dated people of the opposite sex in the past. experimented with clothes and felt a dysphoria for my own body. been completely homophobic for the sole purpose of not being outcast by my male friends. been bullied from my 2nd or 3rd grade to high school throughout. along with that trying to keep up with a dysfunctional family which i was just playing along with as their ideal son. i came out to myself first in 2020 all thanks to my ex who's also queer. i really, really cannot thank her enough for the way she helped me open up. the freedom i faced when i lived abroad for rhe first time for my masters put my soul into a complete rut. i did not know how to embrace and conquer my goals in that freedom because i never took the chance to even TRY freedom. i CRIED at the part where bailey introduced themselves to the queer group with the half anxiety half hope sensation written across her face. snd when they greeted her back, i broke down again. Ever since i chose to even see my queer side and the queer world with a little love and acceptance, my life took a complete turn. i had my FIRST pride last year and i dont remember the last time i felt just HAPPY and ME. i am trying my best to eliminate the internalized homophobia one day at a time. its so TOUGH as it is a complete resistance to my whole life until this point. this film is to the heart, real as it could get. thank you so so much for making this. wishes from India. 🙏

no bc this is such accurate representation of not only being non binary but also the anxiety that comes with not fitting in or feeling like an outcast. just the way they breathe and laugh and everything it feels so real and yea I just have nothing more to say than I love this! glad they found a place where they felt comfortable in the end

So well made and so well acted. I don't mind admitting this made me quite emotional, especially when Zach introducted Bailey to the group. Very thought provoking.
