@rikaze4 жыл бұрын
I think that depends on what the intention behind a piece of music is. Music isn't always for enjoyment, sometimes it's for expression, other times it can be for communication. I think the disparity here is that idols in japan are entertainers, whereas idols in korea are performers/(highly manufactured) artists. Yes, both provide entertainment to people but they do so in drastically different ways. You'd notice the gap between musicians/artists in korea japan isn't quite as big.

@redfish3374 жыл бұрын
The point of 48 groups is never to be perfect. It's designed to never be able to reach perfection. Getting too good at the new song? Well here are a bunch of newer ones... music video is filming in 5 days! Theater getting too polished? Let's shuffle up those members a little bit! It's not aiming for perfection- it adds chaos and makes them roll with it... and that's a lot of the fun. Since they aren't auditioned for the exact same thing, K-pop members probably have higher peak song and dance skills on average, but a lot of AKB can be pretty good it you actually let them just practice the same few songs with the same few members. Different groups have different concepts though of course.
@hazelcrisp4 жыл бұрын
The whole watching them grow and improve is a thing about Japanese media an culture. If you look at Japanese wrestling andd compare it to the WWE it less of your fave becoming champion but more of the journey and story of the Japanese wrestler and their image. A lot of the most popular wrestlers/idols are the ones with an interesting story not necessarily who is most talented which gives the relatability aspect. If you want a good look at how some groups work I'd suggest watching some jpop idol anime like B-project, Uta no Prince sama, Tsukiuta, Love Live, but I'd heavily suggest 'If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die', which has very good satire about fandom culture but does have a lot of heart to it as well. It why idol anime works so much as it's about the story, fun and journey of the idol group be it underdog, personal struggles. If it was a kpop group anime that focuses on the main appeal of the group it would probably just be perfect animated performances.

Most of koreans are already talented before becoming trainees. Just look at BTS, the members were already in classic dance schools, or street dancers, classical musicians, part of the underground k-rap industry, etc... You're not trained to be perfect, that's BS. Japanese idols are just dreaming about becoming an idol, they get scouted and then they work to have a level decent enough to be considered as professional and okay for stages. Where korean idols are people who actually work the sh*t out of them since childhood. Not because it's "like creating a product". They are still people, they want to achieve this perfection. I just don't like when people talk about idols like they're plastic dolls without emotions. Yeah reaching their level is not easy but they're still humans enjoying their idol life. The standards are just different in both country but there's also political issues in that.

Cultural difference? It's just plausible pretext. If J Pop idols wanna call themselves singer or dancer, they have to do it well. They're "idol". They have to be superior to other common people in singing and dancing. Oh yes, someone says that the purpose of J pop idol is to make someone happy. That's funny opinion. @user-nv3tz2hu4u3 жыл бұрын
@@XXXKaruXXX well it is true that some kpop groups put backtrack. BUT they put it usually because of their performance. It is difficult for most kpop groups to keep up with the choreography sometimes if they have to do hard tricks like getting back up from the floor at the stage while singing. That's why their decision was to put a back track during their performance to make the overall performance even enjoyable for audiences. And also japanese singers lip sync during their performance as well. It's not just kpop but all artist/idols around the world. @MissyxAkunai5 жыл бұрын
There's merit in both systems. This is only the pretty portrayal of the Japanese idol system. In Japan, you don't get teachers, you don't get help. You could be singing or dancing irregularly and straining your voice or body parts and cause permanent damage and no one will correct it (because no one knows what's proper and what's not). You learn by watching (it's every trainee for themselves), unless you have money. It's taboo to teach another trainee dance moves or help them catch up to speed in order to prepare for a song (if you watched the series there are many points when the AKB have stated it was unusual to get help from someone else). As well, in Korea, at least larger agencies, they will provide their own training sessions because they see potential in investing into the soon to be trainees. At least in Korea, if you're picked up by a proper agency they will let you go if they don't see merit in keeping you. In Japan, you might be debuted/considered an idol but never have been on a stage before in AKB.
@fayebae40055 жыл бұрын
@@MissyxAkunai That was actually one of the most interesting things i learned while watching the show. How touched and surprised the Japanese trainees were by the help the Korean trainees were giving them because they hadn't gotten it before. It was surprising. You're right that both systems have the merits but the thought of them getting permanent damage to themselves is something i didn't think about.
@TERRA_-uk5gg5 жыл бұрын
@@MissyxAkunai I agree in you that there is merit in both the Japanese and Korean idol system. However, its not like in Japan that idols don't get any formal training beforehand. I don't know about other Japanese idol groups, but for AKB48 and its sister groups, when they are kenkyusei (understudies, trainees) they do receive coaching and are taught dance moves or choreography. Even when they are full members, all of them will go to their respective studios to learn new choreography or to relearn choreography from past shows and the teachers will help them. Also, some members (ex. Takamina, Sayanee, Yuko, Sayaka) will teach members, but yes I agree for the most part they have to learn the choreography on their own. Also, in Japan one of the fan attractors is to see the idol mature and grow in front of them, so its okay if they seem inexperienced at the beginning. Lastly, when they covered some of the trainees in NMB, their dance teacher was saying that once they stood up on that stage, they were professionals so it was up to them to do the work and as a group figure it out to make the best performance possible.

Coming back to this 4 years later, Sakura gave an interview sort of talking about this. Like several had said in those interview segments, she was already an idol for seven years and felt completely outclassed by "trainees". And like everyone she was breaking down crying, feeling that all her experience meant nothing. However, she also said seeing the Japanese participants looking so defeated lit a fire in her. She decided that even if she couldn't make it, she would fight her hardest to represent all the Japanese idols there. She also said that the Japanese idols were basically all cheerleading each other, regardless of the competition. They just wanted to show that someone from Japan was worthy at that point. So with Sakura advancing in ranks, improving massively, and nearly winning the thing, she said it felt like she was doing it for all the Japanese idols there, more so than herself. Now she's in LE SSERAFIM, after IZ*ONE disbanded, a group that's in the top three of rookies as of 2022. With such a successful debut year, and with no cracks show yet, the group might be posed to be one of the top groups of 2023 as well - they admittedly it too early to call that yet. Point is that Sakura has been a Japanese idol and succeeded there, been in a beloved K-pop group who's members are still loved way after disbandment, and is in a position to repeat that process now. This was all due to her hard work and determination - and of course her love for entertaining and the fans.

It has to do with the strategy the entertainment companies have in Japan and Korea. In Korea they are going for perfection in entertainment, while in Japan, AKB specifically, is trying to build a pseudo-personal relationship between idol and fan, and thus, technique is not as important. What matters is how involved the fan feels. As an analogy, imagine two retail companies, one, let's call it SKmarts, focuses on huge supermarkets that sell everything, but only has a few chains in every city. JPstores, on the other hand, focuses on small local stores, having one in every neighborhood, and building a local relation with the community. They look very different, and a naive person may think SKmarts' stores are more professional looking, bigger and more successful, but JPstores is intentionally going for that approachable "second home" feeling, and make no mistake, JPstores has a huge value as a corporation in the stock exchange. That small local image is nothing but a façade, a strategy to get customers to like it better and feel more attached to their brand.

They are going to Korea to test the ground for J-pop style groups. They're in process of expanding to Philippines, Vietnam, India, Taiwan, Thailand and returning to China. This year was technically an international sousenkyo, though with JKT out of play it was relatively irrelevant. But expansion is the play now. Korea is a bit harder to crack though, so they're doing it this way. For 48 management, it'd probably be ideal if they can NOT be the most skilled, and still pull votes. That's what they'd probably most want to see cuz it'd probably mean they could just open up shop as normal. But in any case the results will give them some information and gives them some exposure in Korea that would be hard to get without this sort of setup.

"We only debut after a month", "we never had any vocal training" As a Jpop fan, this is true. Morning Musume for example has often just had girls with absolutely no experience debut almost immediately at age 11, 12, 13. They learn "on the job", as it were. Tbh, I kinda prefer it that way - you really get to see the members grow and improve over the years, from basically not having a clue to becoming much better singers and dancers. Not saying there's no impovement with Kpop idols, but they train so long and hard they're practically perfect when they debut. Also, as others have said, Korea and Japan expect different things when they hear "idol". In Japan singing and dancing ability is FAR less important than personality and character. There are incredibly popular idols who couldn't sing a note, even after years - for example, Michishige Sayumi. The first line of her graduation song after being a member of Morning Musume for 12 years was literally "I can't sing, but I'm cute!" If you're *kawaii* (cute) and *genki* (energetic, happy), that's often most important in being a Japanese idol. Also, she turns freaking *30* this year. You look her up and tell me that girl is 30! lol Of course, that's not to say that ALL Japanese idols are unskilled. There are plenty of great singers and dancers in Jpop (just a few examples from my favourites, Oda Sakura from Morning Musume, and Danbara Ruru and Takagi Sayuki from Juice=Juice are great singers, and MM's Ishida Ayumi and former MM member Sayashi Riho are great dancers), but it's just not as important. A group might have just a couple of really skilled singers and the rest average, but have other qualities like being cute or funny.

Others are sorted into J-pop. For girl groups, the LDH groups and Perfume (despite their idol roots) are sorted into J-pop. Almost everyone else is sorted into josei (female) idol groups. Unlike Johnny's, H!P lost their grip on the girl group scene. AKB showed it was profitable again in 2009 and there was a mass proliferation of groups. Was the whole point of the show just to make the Japanese idols feel like shit? Why did they think this was a good idea?
@redfish3373 жыл бұрын
The point of the show was to debut a group that would be popular in both Korea and Japan. Moreover, K-pop is it's own niche in Japan and no K-pop group has managed to tap into the J-idol market of fans. Korea's MNET had the ulterior motive of gaining money from producing a show. Japan's AKS had the ulterior motive of promoting Japanese style idols internationally as they made a strong push into southeast and south Asia. However, since MNET was basically responsible for the show portion, the show's producers got greedy and leaned it in a way that would immediately favor their company, and even simply just their own pockets through illegal manipulation. So, no, I don't think that was the point. That's just what it became due to mismanagement- a failed opportunity.
@applebee393 жыл бұрын
@@redfish337 can you define what you mean by “no kpop idols have tapped into the j market?” Numerous k idols have gained extreme popularity and commercial success there. Boa, Kara, SNSD, TVXQ, SHINee, 2PM just to name a few. They’ve topped charts even when competing against top Japanese groups. And by no means, am I trying to push the generalization of k idols > j idols. And I pretty much agree with the rest of your points, I’m just confused over this one point in your argument.
@redfish3373 жыл бұрын
@@applebee39 You omitted the key word. Idol. "J-idol market of fans" not " j market" Idol means something different in Japan, and even more for the girl groups from around 2008. It's often literally sorted out in stores as a niche fandom, same as K-pop. K-pop fandom in Japan isn't the same as the J-idol fandom in Japan. K-pop fandom has a core group of young girls. J-idol fandom in Japan has a core groups of 30+ guys. There are other fans of course- the stereotype is an exaggeration but it's still rooted in reality. If a new K-pop groups debuts in Japan it is NOT competing against Nogizaka46 or AKB48 or Momoiroclover Z or BiSH. It is mostly competing against other K-pop groups, and maybe to some extent Avex groups or LDH and such. Momoclo isn't afraid of competition from a new K-pop group because the fandom overlap is almost nothing. This show actually took J-idols who already had J-idol fans. It had a chance to tap into that fandom in Japan- get actual J-idol fans to follow their group. And it more or less failed. It was just another K-pop group taking money from K-pop fans in Japan.

@@applebee39 My opinion, is no. For now anyway. NiziU hits the regular J-pop market a bit better- if they can keep it up they would basically just end up as J-pop despite the K-pop flavor so long as they stick to focusing on Japan with Japanese songs. My impression is their stuff would get sorted into J-pop in stores but like most of us, I'm locked out of the country now so can't actually say one way or the other. So it's not just in the K-pop niche. But it doesn't actually try for the J-idol niche. While I don't know if it gets the K-pop or J-pop designation, I highly doubt it would get sorted into J-idol. They do seem to be fading quite a bit though so I'm concerned they might not have been able to develop loyal fans in the age of covid. We'll see how the next big release goes. I know many of the most popular groups don't often actually appear at TIF but AKB and it's associated groups do. I kind of think any major group that isn't obviously J-idol needs to appear there or something similar to show that they are serious about promoting to that demographic. IZ*ONE actually did... but as far as I know, only in 2020 when it had to be online. And it was like a 10 minute performance rather than a serious setlist. Too little, too late- it was after their scandal and shortly before disbanding. I don't know if they had planned to do so in 2019, but it would have run into their scandal anyway. Again, some idol groups are known to be under known J-idol companies and do their own thing. But for everyone else, appearances at stuff like TIF or Jam Expo or Sekigahara or the other biggest festivals shows that the J-idol fandom is at least part of your desired demographic.

How did this video turn in to a Kpop vs. Jpop thing? I see people saying Jidols are unskilled and Kidols are plastic. Very rude of these people to assume and generalize many things. My K-Idols make me happy whether they focus on the camera or not. Your J-Idols make you happy whether they perform well or not. Don’t go attacking people because they like something else. These girls are coming from different music industries where things are very different and sometimes a bit similar(both are quite strict and if you tell me these J-Idols like AKB48 have more freedom in their musicality and image than kidols...we both know they don’t). when the audition hype on TV in Korea started years ago, BoA was a main judge and everyone said she's the most helpful and fair judge among the big 3, but SM never recruits trainees from these kind of shows, prefering to chose kids from their own auditions or headhunt them (SM has undisputeably the best all-rounded training system in Korea, but also the hardest because there's thousands of kids who want in). It's a pity BoA couldn't help get some of the kids into SM. Just think how much support Park Ji Min and Lee Hi would have gotten there, getting the chance to promote and put out music regularly instead of rotting away. I mean even less-known SM artists like Luna, Zhoumi, the TRAX, Dana, J-min release music and get station videos and perform at concerts or even music shows.

R Kim I don’t know about that. We tended like gravity to Kpop because the facial expression were more versatile.We like it when girl gave more attitude in their performances from aegyo/kawaii to edgy. When it came to jpop I tended to gravitate toward E-girls, Morning Museum, Perfume, faky and etc. Many older girls edgy jpop groups (like Dream and BRIGHT) pretty much fell out popularity for more cuter images like akb48. But everyone has their own opinions. I think when e-girls debuted I was so excited that jpop was getting back it’s edgy attitude.

@rkhandle6 жыл бұрын
When AKB48 singers perform, it really looks like they are having fun. It makes sense if you think about it since they are trained to focus on that aspect of performance. Of course, some Kpop singers are good at that too (like Kim Doyeon from Weki Meki, Yerin from Gfriend, or Kang Mina from Gugudan), but you can defn tell there is a difference. I'm not saying that's better... just that kpop singers can learn from that.

@@itsot12 This is an old comment but, as the J-Idols explained a little during the show, they are brought into groups with little to no training and then have to sink or swim on their own. No one teaches them anything other than maybe some of the older idols in their group. Then, after about a month, they're thrown up on stage to perform every night. Some of them are naturals and become successful right away (like Sakura) and some have a difficult time getting noticed even if they do have some talent (like Miyu). I don't think that AKB ever kicks anyone out after accepting them unless they do something wrong but that just means that some of the members languish in the background for years without ever becoming popular. Of course they can leave any time they want but still, if it was was your dream it'd probably be hard to give it up and just as hard to keep going like Miyu did. AKB also has a general election (which I think was the inspiration for Produce 101, if you look up 'AKB general election' you'll see what I mean) every single year where all of the members in all of the groups are ranked according to popularity. The most popular members form the 'senbatsu' and appear in one of the upcoming music videos. The election was so famous that they used to actually broadcast it every year with commentary. Imagine being someone like Jurina who got accepted into the group at 11 years old and was specifically positioned as the 'rival' to the most popular member at the time (Maeda Atsuko AKA Acchan). She got a crazy amount of hate from Acchan fans and was always compared to her, all while she was still in Elementary school.

AKB is just different field of idol industry, idols who are just there for people to admire and confide in. Japan has the 2nd biggest music industry in the world, how stupid do you have to be to think AKB groups are the best they can offer? Japan does hip hop, rock, and everything else. All the Japanese K-pop idols are so much better at dancing, didn’t your narrow minds notice that? Now we have XG. You’re all assuming sht about these Japanese trainees just because you’ve only been exposed to K-pop. Japan never needed to go global like K-pop because they sustain themselves well, meanwhile K-pop fanbase is filled with international fans consuming content illegally and leeching off K-pop’s hard-work. But that’s the best fanbase K-pop can get so they settle with it. Either way, XG is showing what Japanese girls can really do, as if Japanese K-pop idols haven’t shown enough. Korean trainees can only dream and cry about perfecting their skills to the same level.

Aw they're so cute and relatable J-idols always have such a genuine feeling to them If anyone was wondering, yes most idols in Japan are taught to be interactive rather than talented to build a relationship with their fans, but that doesn't mean there aren't j-idols who are taught to be talented. @@yxnotmin9814 I um..? What? It's the exact opposite. The only kpop group I can think of that truly, 100% represents who they really are even on camera is Super Junior. And that's because they geniunely don't give a fuck about their reputation. I'm not saying this to bad mouth them btw, I think it's great and they're hilarious. But they're some of the only ones. Korea is strict af and even the smallest "mistakes" kpop idols make can turn into huge scandals, so there's a geniune reason to why most don't show their true selves on camera. But think about it for a second, do you really think every kpop group out there is 100% honest with their fans? Of course not. The only ones who have that luxury are 2nd generation idols. Current generations are fucked, even at the top level. Even cursing is seen as bad, but idols at the very top can at least get away with that. I'm guessing you mostly follow old groups/very popular groups, because cussing each other out is VERY rare. Super Junior are again the only ones who do it so much that you can call them honest. But holy fuck, expressing frustration on camera WITHOUT A CARE? Are we even talking about the same industry? It took Twice, the current no.1 girlgroup in Korea, so fucking long to start talking about their long hours and being honest about how stressful their job is. And even then, they still try to sugarcoat it, because some fans will bash them for "not understanding their privilege", or any other honestly stupid reason. They've been humble for years, but the moment they express even a bit of discontent, they get hated on. And obviously, Twice aren't the only ones. Joy got hated on for joking about not getting an award for her first acting gig. Got7's Jackson was mocked for years by Koreans for his energetic persona, so he changed his persona to a snobbish producer who never fucking smiles. They don't even complain when the hate is stupid. They just take it, and sometimes even change themselves to fit whatever Korea wants. Some don't, sure, but the vast majority do. And dude, one more thing. The "goody-two-shoe/girl next door (boy next door) or straight out babyish" persona that you accused ONLY Jpop idols of having? That's the most fucking common Kpop persona out there. I love Twice, but if you watch reality shows with them (or honestly reality TV shows with most groups) they'll use either one of these two persona : either the "goody-two-shoe/girl next door" type, or the baby-ish type, that does aegyo every two seconds. It's a defense mechanism, I get it. The reality shows get featured on TV and they don't want to show a non-Korean society approved persona to a nationwide audience, I get it. BUT THESE ARE STILL SUPER OVERUSED TROPES IN KPOP. They use it, and they protect themselves from criticism. AND SO DO JPOP IDOLS. So really, what I have to say is, I don't think you've spent enough time in either industry to judge. You accuse jpop idols of using 2D personas while not realising that most kpop idols do that too. And honestly? Jpop idols do comedy better. Aqours' sexy teacher sketch is still one of the best things on the internet. That's just my personal taste though.

Avex has money. They can afford to have a farm system . And they can afford to have a separate idol label. That's why they also have Super Girls, Cheeky Parade, GEM (disbanded), and Wasuta. Which are all run as lower upper/upper mid-tier idol groups. Super Girls was formed by a super-wide 7000 person audition, membership decided June 2010, first live August 7th, 2010.... 1-2 month turnaround. I think the other 3 groups were formed out of their farm system though. 48 groups can just give an old stage to any newly formed group. So the creative part that would normally slow a new group just isn't there. The material already exists. Once the girls are signed and learn enough material to start performing they start performing. And... most other groups have indie roots. They have no capital... they can't afford to bleed money. They just need to get them out there ASAP.

when I first heard about produce 48, I thought it would probably be bad and too much drama for me to handle and so didn’t really wanna watch it. I think in general the reason why I didn’t start is because of I recently watched Produce 101 China which the same concept here but taking place in China. i loved all the girls but what set me off was one during a relay race, one of the girls fell and got injured but the other girls just ran past her and were only focusing on winning. some of the girls on there were too ignorant and shallow for me and so I stopped watching all together. I had my doubts about this show but seeing AKB girls on here kinda makes me want to start watching it because of how genuine they are. god I don’t know anymore, I need help. they just so adorable and I relate to them so much.

That's what I liked about Sixteen as well. So much of being an idol is being a part of a group, being a team player, caring for your members, leading by example, etc. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, so reinforce it before it breaks. ;)

The 48 girls are too precious to be in a show like this one, seeing the girls crying because their told that they don't belong on a stage or whatever truly breaks my heart. I mean idols in Japan and Idols in Korea are two completely different things. I love Japanese idols because they are close to their fans, I love seeing young girls being lovable and cute improve over the years it make me really proud of them, this is not something I can feel with Korean groups. They will never reach the same level as the Korean trainees because their goal is not to be badass dance machine but to be able to make people smile and forget every bad feeling they can have at the moment.
