Yeah, most micro-nation exists at the grace of another country. The exceptions are those that are on the border between two or more counties, they often exist as a compromise between those nations (see for instance Andorra for this). The exception of the exception is Lichtenstein which used to exist on the grace of Austria so that the duke of Austria could continue to call himself Emperor (Emperor of Austria and Lichtenstein :D)

Just a quick ad-on on Monaco sovereignty. The country is independant, but still relies very heavely on the French, in two main fields. - Its a protectorate, therefore France will provide Monaco with security, but Monaco can't ever have any diplomatic stance that would harm French interest. (that's written down in a treaty) - Until 2003, the Monegasque prime minister had to be French ! Since 2003, he can be (and often is) Monegasque, but he still has to aprouved by the French government. Their are other links, such as following : until 1998, Monaco's interest were represented at the UN by the French, they now have their own seat. TMC, the media company of Monaco, is own by the French (TF group). Or more obviously, Monaco football club plays in the French Championship or the Monte-Carlo Master 1000 is on French soil (in Roquebrune, which is part of these land they lost).

Indonesia adopted the flag in 1945 after its independence with the historical argument that the flag has become the identity of the Majapahit Empire since the 13th century.
