MONASTERY OF ALCOBAÇA | The Tragic History of Inês de Castro and Dom Pedro I.
From this tragic story of an impossible love, the expression of the Portuguese language is born: 'Now, Inês is dead!' The Monastery of Alcobaça was built from 1178 and inaugurated in 1252. Real Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça, better known as Mosteiro de Alcobaça, is the first Gothic work built in Portugal. The construction was made by the monks of the Cistercian Order, a Reformed Catholic Catholic monastic order who wear religious robes of the color white. In 1834, the monks were forced to leave the monastery due to the extinction of all religious orders in Portugal.
The story of Inês de Castro and the heir to the throne Portuguese Dom Pedro I has an even more tragic ending than William Shakespeare's love story between Romeo and Juliana.
Based on a true story, which took place in Portugal in the Middle Ages, the story of an impossible love between the heir to the throne Portuguese, Pedro I and the Galician lady, Inês de Castro.
This tragic love story has it all: from a rapturous youthful love to the coronation of a corpse. It is a medieval story, with intrigue, murder and revenge.
Do not confuse the D Pedro I of this story with the D Pedro I who was emperor of Brazil. In fact, the emperor of Brazil D Pedro I was known in Portugal as D Pedro IV.
Afonso IV, King of Portugal, married his son Pedro I to a Castilian noblewoman, D. Constança Manuel, from an influential family at the Spanish court. The agreement sealed the fragile political ties between Portugal and Spain. This practice of marriages between such kingdoms was practiced as a political alliance, a guarantee that neither Portugal nor Castile would break peace agreements or agreements in which the purpose was to expel the Arabs from the Iberian Peninsula.
It is at this moment that the Galician lady, Inês de Castro, is taken to the Portuguese court accompanying the Infanta D. Constança.
Pedro and Inês became involved in a love affair and King Alfonso IV sent her into exile. Agnes remained there until Constance's death when Peter had her brought back, living as his wife, but without making the union official. They had four children which, according to historians, would have caused King Alfonso IV's fear that illegitimate children would seek the throne Portuguese and had her killed.
The prince led a revolt against his father, starting a civil war in Portugal. Prince Peter I became known as Peter the Punisher.
When he ascended the throne, after the death of his father, now king of Portugal, Dom Pedro I had 2 murderers executed in the public square, ripping out their hearts.
Pedro I made Inês de Castro posthumous queen, even after she died, and ordered everyone to kiss the dead queen's hand.
He had a tomb built for him and another for his beloved Inês, in the Monastery of Alcobaça. The tombs are a true masterpiece of Gothic sculpture and have withstood time and Napoleonic attacks. The tombs of Dom Pedro I (of the Alphonsian Dynasty) and D. Inês de Castro, remember, since the fourteenth century, that love can be eternal.
