I served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego (32nd Street), went to Compton with shipmates from there, no problems, whatsoever. I was stationed in North Chicago,(NTC Great Lakes) went to Southside Chicago, with shipmates from there, AND by my lonesome, no problems, whatsoever. I was stationed in Norfolk(Norfolk Naval Station) went to hoods in Norfolk, Newport News and as far away as Richmond, by my lonesome, no problems, whatsoever! Finally, I was stationed in Jacksonville, (Naval Air Station Jax) for four years, went to every hood in Jacksonville, ate everywhere in Jacksonville, met tons of natives from Jacksonville, you want to no how many issues I had? None! Zilch! Not one! It comes down three things: 1. How you carry yourself. 2. Minding your business. 3. What you are doing, meaning your reason for being where you are at anytime. If you are doing something nefarious, chances are high nefarious acts will find you. But, if you are just having a good time, while being cautious, then, your day will more than likely be conflict free. To bring this home and prove how people are blowing J'ville's rep' out of proportion, the only incident I ever had in Jacksonville, wasn't actually in J'ville, but Orange Park. My shipmates and I went to a Chinese buffet, one block east of Orange Park Mall. The Chinese guy saw six black guys, all of size and in shape walk in. We all sat and ate, but one of my friends, didn't like Chinese food, yet, he paid for the buffet, anyway. However, the only thing he would eat was egg rolls. So, he would literally put 5 to 8 egg rolls on his plate and eat. He made two trips and even though we each paid $7.95 for All U Can Eat, the Chinese guy took the entire pan off egg rolls out of its spot and all you saw was this empty space with about an inch of steaming water underneath. We asked, "What was going on? Why did you take the egg roll pan off of the buffet, after we paid?" The Chinese guy replied, "We are out of egg rolls!" "Really?! Come on! Egg rolls is all he eats, he doesn't like Chinese food. Plus, you see all of us Navy guys walk in, you didn't have an issue then, and you gladly took our money. Now you are taking items off of the buffet bar, then lying claiming you are out? Please stop it and put them back! A Chinese restaurant running out of egg rolls is similar to McDonald's running out of Big Macs or a strip club running out of singles, it's never going to happen, ever!" I stated. That was the last time we spent money there. It wasn't eight months later he place was closed!

4 generations of my family lived here. The problem is the land itself. It is literally toxic. My great grandmother became mentally ill, and grandmother & mother have and had cancer. The land itself is unstable as we had stories and pictures of people's new home cracking in half. Then starting with my mother's generation, there was black flight. Those who would gain a career and in time become the new elders & leaders of the neighborhood moved to other areas in the city or left. Basically a loss of capital and a brain drain. The church moving further down killed the area you initially started the video. Moncrief is a story of the what happens when people have choices on where to live when they grow up, and there is no effort to replace & maintain.

OMG! Just look at all the dead bodies everywhere! Folks, I'm a 76 year old lifetime resident of Jacksonville, and I grew up near Moncrief Road. It's not half as bad as these current videos would lead you to believe. Crime can and does occur everywhere, but lay off our neighborhoods. And that's what they are: "neighborhoods," not just "hoods." Some pretty awesome people came out of there, including yours truly and my six siblings, none of whom are in prison and none of whom were ever robbed or shot dead on the street. That green grocery store? It was C&C when I was growing up. Run by a white couple who, as far as I know, never had problems in the community. The church across the street is St. Matthew Baptist, where many of my present day values were formed. I have great memories of the Moncrief community, including Simonds-Johnson Park.

Actually if you know the true history of Jax, the area around Moncrief and Soutel was the first black owned golf course in the south. It was owned by AL Lewis (Who also owned most of American Beach). White people purchased the land that would become Washington Estates. So in reality the land just migrated back to black hands.
