So much homelessness here because nobody can afford the outrageous rent prices. $1,300-$1500/month for a *STUDIO* apartment. There's even been local news articles about people being priced right out of town.

I've lived in Jacksonville my entire life. Over 50+ years. Crime use to be contained to certain areas but now it has bled into all areas and has gotten bad. Never thought I would leave but I'm currently selling my home and moving to a small town further north. I never heard gunshots in my neighborhood and now I hear them regularly. And one day a man decided to gun down another man in front of my house, killing him for no reason. That was pretty much it for me. Enjoy the nice weather but the crime and the people are too much now.

You Know why the reported crime rate is higher #1 we have an extremely proactive police force. When a crime is reported officers show up. Hence more crimes reported. # 2 we are a port city thus we are not only international commerce but also military. #3 we being a lowered metro city we have many square miles to be monitored we actually need more mental health services. # 4 we are a very diverse population but inclusion needs work. # 5 racism and drug trafficking addiction so sad and tragic along with a larger than visible gang presence are keys …the video which shows no homeless and an empty downtown we need to spend money to increase downtown confidence more so than broad based community resources.we are in process of acquiring properties close to Downtown personally I would think we should remove the rescue missions to out lying areas and create an environment where the homeless can find housing : key if they want housing ,pmost do not as we know from most other areas of the country. We also have a super large backlog on the court docket which means repeat offenders are dumped back on the streets. Be careful Tennessee scares me and I am used to Jacksonville I am not planning to run from Jacksonville we keep,offering to,assist physically and spiritually clothing pantry’s job fairs it’s life after planting a seed.

Been in Duval since 1984. Moved here when I was 7 yrs old. Downtown suffered as the indoor malls exploded and 20 yrs ago the outdoor open air malls ruined the indoor malls. 2 homeless shelters closed and that was over 300 - 400 spaces gone. If Shad Khan gets his way downtown in the next 10 yrs will be changed forever.

Truth! Downtown will be ruined and downtown will again spiral because building an inner city is for dwellers of all walks of life not just high end condos the city started taking the people away from the city center because they were poor and on assistance which they thought brought crime. What brought crime was lack of adequate employment and infrastructure they had created the demon hud apartments and instead of managing the people they created a generation of people that needed hud if you want people to grow you create the opportunity to build their lives to the fullest possible future a future ,so that they can bring their families along he is who he surrounds himself with if a man can’t be proud of his place in life he won’t lift generations up they will stay together. Like the old saying birds of a feather flock together. Create a downtown and surrounding area that invites growth and development damn the football field bring it all together family’s a south bank filled with people living just across the River parks to play in not to listening to concerts only

Life long Westside dweller, here. You could spend a whole trip exploring the different sections of town. If anyone thinks there are cultural differences between the different burroughs of NYC, try learning all the differences between the Westside, Arlington, Beaches, San Marco, Tinsletown, Springfield, Moncrief, Mandarin, etc Between the abandoned school and the statue of Gen Jackson is the Duval County Courthouse where I work. We'd have given you a tour if you'd asked...

Downtown Jacksonville is like a ghost town on the weekends and after business hours. I’m glad you came to Jacksonville, my adopted hometown (I’m originally from San Diego). I’m glad to live here, not too crowded like Miami and not a tourist destination like Orlando and I like it that way. Plus the winters are cooler up here than south Florida and here we closer to the mountains than there. Come to Atlantic Beach, I believe you and Nicole would love there! It’s a beautiful beach town!

this is definitely the most excited i've ever been for a video about Jacksonville haha I was born and raised there. I left 7 years ago and im amazed at how different it looks already. In front of the Wells Fargo building , along the bridge, there used to be a shopping center on the water called the Landing. It was a two story structure shaped like a horseshoe facing the water. I thought nothing of it growing up but it was a really unique building. I think you would have gotten a kick out of it since you like unique buildings. Jacksonville was also considered the hollywood of the silent film era. You can find videos of down town jacksonville on youtube from like 1920 and it's packed with people like new york city. im glad you enjoyed my city! have fun in Tennessee!

There are blighted and places in decline in Jacksonville...,but I see much potencial and growth; for the futures Miami gets to expensive and so does Orlando;I see potencial for companies moving into Jacksonville;retirees moving into Jacksonville and people pushed out of Miami/South Florida and Orlando;I can see Jacksonville growing much in the next 10 years .

I moved here to Jax 10 years ago. At first I really didn’t like it but it has grown on me and I must say I really enjoy it for the most part. I live in the Avondale neighborhood which is not far from downtown, a very beautiful fun neighborhood. But let’s also remember that the fabulous band 38 Special is also from Jacksonville! sweet. I lived in riverside. I used to shop at that publix on riverside avenue. I lived at 1094 cherry street, near the corner of Cherry St and Remington St. My dad still lives in Mayport. I am now currently in Fort Worth, TX. I do miss aspects of living in that area. I think like you, I hear a lot of people at first not like the city too much, but it always grows on them.

A lot of bands are from Jacksonville not just the "ok" band .38 Special. And of course you enjoy Jacksonville now, you live in Avondale! One of the most expensive districts to live and where pretty much everything is within spitting distance of you...oh the Publix near 5 points to packed?? Not to worry there's another Publix a hop skip and a jump off San Juan, oh and wait, Ortega forest is also very close with blissful parks and walk ways. Don't want to drive to far going out to eat?? No problem...in fact you can walk!! Just up the street to a slew of diners, drive-ins and dives, wanna see a movie close by? Hey we got you ...good ol Sun-Ray! Be thankful you can live and more importantly afford living in Avondale.

At night, you can actually see into a lot of the tall buildings when workers leave the lights on. Downtown Jax is beautiful at night when the bridges are lit up, each with a different color (lights or the paint is illuminated). I lived there for over 10 years and just visited a week ago and they've added colored floodlights to a lot of the big buildings.

i got out of the Navy in 1991 and lived in Jacksonville until 1998, the jobs don't pay as much but the jobs are plentiful. Never had any issues i loved living there but once my mom got sick i moved back to Sacramento and I've been missing Jacksonville since i left.

Jacksonville is a very unsafe city. It use to be just the north side, but it has bleed all over. Back in the 80’s I got robbed downtown at the bus station. Ten years later I got robbed at the traffic light broad daylight. Retired Navy so I spent a lot of time there. I’m a native Floridian and stay the hell out of Jacksonville. HOWEVER, there are some areas that is beautiful. The historic Ortega area, Arlington, Bay Meadows. But not enough for me to EVER want to live there.

@Beach and Nature fan I know there are. Retired Navy Senior Chief and used to live in Bay Meadows. Loved it there, but I had an Aunt and Uncle up on the North Side. There neighborhood was nice, but my car was broken into. I was robbed at the light. Was downtown and someone stole my car. Held up at gun point downtown. I had zero luck in Jacksonville proper. I eventually moved to Ortega and really loved that area. But like I said outside influences were bad for me. The beaches and fishing were always nice. I used to drive A1A on the weekend and just get away.

I’m afraid if I give you some facts and data. You would probably dismiss them. Please understand that I am “Black” and take exception to your statement. But since you must know. I was robbed at gun point downtown by some “Blacks!” But two white guys car jacked me at gun point broad daylight (fortunately, they weren’t very good at it) and every time my car was stolen (three times). It was a Hispanic crew (type of car I had they wanted). So, as you can see. Crime doesn’t care what color you are. Be educated and not ignorant. News flash! The Blacks can move anywhere they want! I know that’s NOT what you wanted hear, but it is true.

Born and raised in Jax from 63-82. My parents were married there 66 years ago tomorrow! (5/25) Dad is going strong at 88! I lived in Arlington on the river and woods. It was my playground! I would find many sharks teeth as this was a major area where mama sharks had their nursery. We are several miles from the ocean. I would also find a lot of Indian pottery in the bluffs overlooking the river. In the early 60’s they were moving Indian graves in Arlington to develop new neighborhoods. It wasn’t uncommon to find bones in the woods where they had been discreetly placed.

Hi, that is a beautiful building --the high school. Turns out that 3 real estate investors bought an old highschool, somewhat li like this one, very old and closed and abandoned. They bought it and renovated it with 1 and 2 bedrooms apartments. It was beautifl. I loved that.

I have lived here since 2009 when I moved here from NYC. Jax has the worst downtown I have ever been in. Football stadium, homelessness and a massive church that makes it impossible to build anything down there.

@@deirdrekiely6187 the church that is down there runs downtown (First Baptist). There are also two homeless shelters. Nothing “fun” can be built around the church. If they could buy out the church and move the shelters, downtown would come back.

Florida is growing way too fast. Sadly the greedy developers and commissioners don’t care about the infrastructure nor quality of life. The noise pollution is so bad. I’m in Sarasota and they are literally tearing up every inch of green space. It’s really bad with no end in sight.😢

@@tonepoet the beaches are nice when there isn’t red tide, which is quite often now. Plus, with the overcrowding, it’s not even worth it to go. They have absolutely ruined downtown SRQ, tons of multi million dollar high rise condos, they are doing major reconstruction that will take up to 10 yrs to complete so it’s impossible to enjoy anything with all the destruction and orange barrels. It feels very claustrophobic there. Used to love walking around but yet another thing developers have destroyed. Gone is the sleepy beach town.

Here is a fun tip for getting to see some things most dont get to. Call ahead to some of the high dollar hotels in the area. Tell them that you are thinking of using their hotel for a wedding or family reunion (or similar) and ask for a tour. You will get to see sights and areas that you wouldn't get to to see. And inside many of our Jacksonville large buildings are small restaurants. These often have great food and are hidden from the general public.

I only went there to do some crowd control work for the Jacksonville Jaguars a few times. We went on a coach bus and we got paid extra for the food that day. It was just a weekend job. My coworkers always encouraged me to go on those trips.

I grew up in the southern suburbs of Jax (specifically, Orange Park) in the 80s and early 90s and it's been interesting to watch the city's development. I left Florida in 2006 after finishing my engineering degree and haven't been back so this was fun to watch. The house I grew up in is less than a mile from the Brickyard Rd the Lynyrd Skynyrd song is named after off of College Dr along Doctor's Inlet and hearing that song brings such incredibly intense nostalgia for me. The city has always had a bit of an inferiority complex (at least since the 80s) with regards to the other 3 major metros in Florida. It constantly wants to be bigger than it is in terms of population and influence.

Our city was actually called Cowford, Florida, before the Great Fire of 1902. I believe it was 1902.. Everything burnt down. But the town came together and built it right back up. Then the name was changed to Jacksonville. Proud to be born and raised here.

I actually spent a night in the Jacksonville jail in the early 70’s when I was hitchhiking from Boston to Miami to visit my uncle. The cops picked me and my buddy up when we were sleeping in some bushes. Lucky for me my uncle was a high powered attorney In Miami and when they checked him out they let us go and even gave us a ride back to the highway on ramp to hitch our next ride. Wow!! Awesome footage with the drone! What type of drone are you flying. Very smooth and clear footage. My wife is from Jacksonville and I spent a lot of time there when i was in the US Navy. Definately visit VA ans check out some of our fine cities. Suffolk is really nice.

I went to high school at the modern Stanton college preparatory high school. It is now a magnet and gifted program for AP and honors students. It is located in one of the rougher neighborhoods in Jacksonville, but it gets some of the best funding in the state.

I moved to Jax 40 years ago from South Florida and hated it the first year but by the time I moved to Central Florida 3 years ago. I truly loved the place. It became my favorite home. It had everything I ever wanted. I could have lived there to the day I died, but it kept getting more expensive. So, I retired and moved south to the highest point above sea-level in the state. I got away from the flooding but not the wind of hurricanes. I now live in a small town that is miles away from anything and everything and Jax is only a memory. It goes to prove you never appreciate what you got until it is gone....I sure miss my old home in Jacksonville Beach!!! Be sure where your going is better than where you been before you take that last jump. 😢

I lived in San Jose CA for 7 years. It has the best weather. Very corporate unless you visit the East Side. Cielito Lindo is a great restaurant near downtown. I've also visited Columbus. Melt is a great restaurant near the OSU campus. I've visited DC in 2021. Went to the White House and saw Al Sharpton walking around near the Cheesecake Factory. Jacksonville is the one place I've never seen. So thank you for the tour!

Moved here from South Florida in the 70's and looking to find my way out. The city is fast becoming another Atlanta, even the roadways are the same. It used to be a big small town with a strong civil connection to family and faith. Not anymore.

9:00 this is where the old Court house was until 2020 or 2021. The one you found off of the Blue Bridge was where our JACKSONVILLE LANDING shopping center demolished completely in 2019.

You forgot about the Allman Brothers, also from Jax😊 Interesting to see the city through the eyes of a visitor. If you only had 24hrs and that's what you saw it's not half bad. Definitely some better places to eat if you wanted to find one. Like everywhere the homeless situation has gotten worse, it's really sad, but could definitely be worse. But nice video, I feel like I should go explore around town more.

Great band-awful management. One of their managers didn’t want to pay a club fee and murdered the owner back in the day. Their current manager threatened to have me fired because I wouldn’t allow her access to another guest’s room.

Born and raised in the Jax area. Born at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Jax. Lived in many areas of Jax and then called home the JaX beaches area of Jax, Neptune and Atlantic Beaches including Mayport. Everytime I arrive home and drive over one of Intracoastal bridges connecting Jax to the Beaches, the salt marsh smell is home and like no other in any other locale of Florida or elsewhere. I grew up mud tromping the beaches marshes all along the intracoastal. Joined the US Navy at 19 and only stationed at Mayport once. Prefer to remember it as it was. Love my home dont care much for what she has become. Jax beaches are gorgeous and great memories of a great place.
