Howard made the halftime show. We already knew the scores; it was hoping our team would be part of the highlight reel that made for anticipation, and hearing him narrate the action was magical.

Cosell could weave a narrative around a game that, by the end, made it seem like an epic saga. His enthusiasm was infectuous, having your own emotions rising and falling in tempo, and his knowledge made the viewer a more informed fan. That was why his broadcasts were such a joy to listen to. Modern game-callers just suck the air out of the room and they haven't a tenth of the verbal skill or scholarship Howard Cosell could deliver even to a crappy game much less the contests that were good enough to make the halftime highlights.

Can hear Howard now as he looks down upon today's scene: "The Cowboys worth $3 billion. Surely one jests. That so called entrepreneur Mr. Jones has defrauded the long suffering citizens of Dallas for over two decades. True. He did deliver three Vince Lombardi trophies, but credit must be given to Coaches Johnson & Switzer. Both of whom were clearly discharged absent any reasonable explanation. Nay I say to Mr. Jones. One need only look at a mirror to see why the Cowboys have suffered so long. My good friend Mr. Meredith smiles approvingly."

Cosell was the best. Such an unforgettable voice/inflection. The perfect hype and great insight. Back in the day, so many people did impersonations of Cosell. Just great memories. ...old reliable; topsy turvy; ebb and flow. Cosell and boxing was even better than MNF. When he covered Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard no one else like him. So funny when Billy Crystall impersonated him.

Loved the halftime highlights on MNF. Turned the volume low on my 12” black and white TV so my mom wouldn’t yell at me to turn it off. Great memories.

Many people found Howard Cosell "irritating"-I heard stories people would turn down the audio on the TV and watch the game with the play by play provided by the radio broadcast of the game. Now with time I've come to really appreciate Mr. Cosell--In fact I miss his knowledge and insight--it certainly is better than the idiots on the broadcasts now

Before you had cable TV and if you were in a non NFL city, this was all you had for highlights(other than your local news).
@raygordonteacheschess5501
@raygordonteacheschess5501 4 жыл бұрын
There are no real non-NFL territories, and if you are blessed to be in one of them, like Albany, GA, or Flemington, NJ, you can sometimes get five games on a single Sunday (in Albany it was on 2, 4, and 13 from the Macon and Tallahassee markets covering the Falcons and Jags and with different doubleheaders).
@skuter84
@skuter84 2 жыл бұрын
Wasn’t much difference in ANY city before cable came along. If you missed the Halftime Highlights back then you had to wait until next week. NFL Films would show “The Game of the Week” but here in HOU it wouldn’t air until late Saturday night, with the next weeks games of course airing the next day. Different times….

Agreed!! I remember seeing that clip on highlight reels over and over. Then when Billy Sims went pro, I'd always picture him and WP just baffling those who would try to take them down. WP was better (I know), but Billy (before he got hurt) was special. I remember being 11 y.o. in 1980 and completely obsessed with him. Sad the Lions always sucked back then, b/c I always wished Billy would have won a SB. He was damn fun to watch tho.

One of my fondest memories.... Me and Frank... 1970's Children with a tape cassette recorder... Frank and I would spend hours recording ourselves... We would trade off being Howard Cosell... Giving ply by play, and giving commentary...I would pay tens of thousands of dollars for a single of those recordings!! RIP Frank! We were a force and we had an awesome childhood together! ..... I miss you brother! See you ... one day soon!

Best years in football i was probably 8 or 9 years old but can remember that era well..straight grid iron Bradshaw got lit up, nowadays that defensive end would had to slow up so not to hit the qb so hard...and no petty pass interference for automatic 1st downs

Howard cosell was way ahead of his time. Long before hype,controversy bigger then life selling became the norm on the internet,Cosell was doing it by personal appearances,writing and of course most importantly on national Tv. No more so then on Monday night football and then in boxing. He was the ultimate car crash,where everyone wanted to avoid,watching and listening to,but in the end,you knew you would have to turn the sound back on and the tv to see what he was babbling about now. He may have been disliked hugely but in a sort of friendly way. Like that black sheep of the family,you try to ignore but always will love. Howard was the ultimate salesman of himself,hype and for the sports he broadcast. Unlike so many fake ones today,numerous with todays social media,he was and shall always remain the real deal. Like Woody Hayes,Bear Bryant,Bo,Howard Cosell shall always be a legend in sports history,without ever playing a mi ute or coaching a game. Quite a feat for all time.
