Ryan you forgot to mention about shooting in colder temperatures can really affect the equipment. Batteries for example drain way faster. So to the person asking: make sure that you have extra batteries and somewhere to charge them.
@jimfergusson9 жыл бұрын
Other suggestions for cold weather shooting (like, -20C/0F)... -Keep spare batteries inside your outerwear, as close to your body as you can. Cold temps shorten battery life significantly. You may be able to get more life out of a 'dead' battery by warming it up again. -If you are trying to transition from outdoors to indoors, allow plenty of time for your lens to de-fog. -When going from very cold to indoors, there's a chance your gear could have moisture condense on the internal electronics. You may want to pop your lens off and put the body and lens into a sealed container with a sock full of kitty litter - this will help absorb stray moisture out of the inner workings. -Cheap plastic gets brittle in the cold - be careful, and maybe don't crank your knobs as tight as you normally would. -If it's snowing, remember to take the same anti-moisture protection you would in the rain - plastic bags, umbrellas, etc.

I was shooting a timelapse at night, which meant standin in one place from 1 AM to 5 AM. It was the end of summer, start of autumn, so I just put on 2-3 times the layers I would usually put on (two socks, two sweatpants under my regular pants, two T-shirts, two pullovers, a thin military jacket under my thick coat, etc.). I was still a bit cold towards 4 AM, because I wasn't moving at all for hours.

Speaking of working in the cold, there was a dance scene in the Blues Brothers ("Shake Your Tail Feather" -Ray Charles) where ~150 extras on the street and on the railroad overpass had to dress in summer clothes in the chilly late-autumn/winter. Summer releases set in summer must be numbing for those onscreen.

When shooting in cold weather make sure to acclimate your lenses to the ambient temperature your shooting in. Cold lenses on a warm set will fog up.

The cold weather is absolute hell to film in! Last year I was making a short film with a couple of my friends for our school's 100 hour film contest. We only had lights that required plugs and we had to film outside. Lucky us, it snowed that night......there was a point that I had the light something quite far from the camera......I literally had to lay down, stick my face into the snow and hold the lights, while having to avoid being in frame. It's was god awful, BUT we got second place. So I was happy :)

"Everybody knows how to dress for the cold"... I made a Hamlet movie in the cold for my high school English class a few years ago. I live in Montreal and it took two hours for me to regain feeling in my feet and hands after filming. Advice to everyone: wear a long-sleeve shirt, a sweeter, and a jacket, long johns with socks over those, and thick gloves, as well as a scarf if you intend on filming in the cold for more than an hour in the northern parts of North America. DO NOT underestimate the elements.

Why are TV shows never shot in 2:35:1 or 2:40:0? Like seriously, I'd like to know, because I want to write and direct for TV but I refuse to be in charge of a project that's not shot or output in 2:35:0 or 2:40:0.
@lakobadmitry7469 жыл бұрын
#1 Why is this a deal breaker for you? Unless you're working on a show which uses these ratios not just as a stylistic choice but also as an effective storytelling tool (see most Xavier Dolan films), why would it matter? #2 Most shows don't shoot this way, but some do. Utopia on Channel 4 was shot and broadcasted in 2.35. There wasn't a reason for it besides "it looks more cinematic" (from director commentary). If 2.35 is important to the storytelling and not just an aesthetic choice, then I guess you could try to be adamant about the ratio. But remember that when films were starting to be shown on TV in widescreen, people complained that they were being cheated because of the black bars. Amazing shows are captured and broadcasted in 16:9 all the time.

Hey F.R. happy thanksgiving, I am a up and coming filmmaker and I have a question that needs answering: I am learning all I can on Copyrights and Transformative Media and would like to know what is your stance on what can be "Transformative". I see Fan-Made films and animations, but could Fan-Made Music Videos fit into that type of "Transformative Media", especially if you are not intending to monetize the project and just putting it out there for promotion of your filmmaking skills? I would love to hear a answer to this here or if possibly the FilmRiotMondays

Go to your local home depot. There they have 1000 watt work lights. If you bounce them off something white above your actor it creates a nice soft diffuse that's very bright. These lights are tripod mounted well built safe and only 30 dollars.

I propose an idea. What if, instead of you answering the questions directly like this, you answer them in form of an episode. That way, you can pick the questions that you think are important to answer, then give the in-depth answer in the following episodes. It also enables you to do a research to collect as many data as possible for the best proper answers to the questions. Don't get me wrong, Monday's episodes are great, they really have the community vibe in it, but maybe in terms of answers-quality-wise, the idea that I've proposed may not be a bad idea and doable. However, in the end it opens to your consideration, of course.
