I know what you mean about blending into mud. I have trouble knowing when to blend and when to just leave the marks alone. I am thankful for generous teachers (such as Susan) willing to share their knowledge to keep the motivation and learning progress going. I love blending and layering but it can get out of control for me sometimes. I am having fun but I know it takes practice and good teachers.

Have you ever tried using clear gesso a second time once the tooth starts to become filled with dust/pastel in order to build more layers? (before too much pastel is applied where it would just spread the pastel if too much is on the surface?
@monetcafe
@monetcafe Жыл бұрын
@Nazareth434! I haven't, but I don't think it would work out very well. The gesso would most likey just smear and muddy your pastels. What I suggest is using a pray fixative to be able to achieve more layers. Happy painting!

chaserkitty I actually don’t think you would need to add the clear gesso at all when using gouache, unless you’re just want the texture. And I don’t see why that wouldn’t work. I give it a try on a small sample piece. And be careful… Because if you do buy some pastels it can become very addicting. Ha ha

At the end of the video, the painting looks more natural, because of the green color. How did you achieve the grassy effect? i missed that part. any way, it turned out. good enough to sell, or frame! idea! scrape the grassy area with a clean kitchen scrub pad? or a stencil knife?

Dear Susan, If I buy some clear gesso do I also need Fine Pumice Gel to mix in? Or will the gesso work on its own? Also, does the gesso feel similar to uart 400 grit paper? Thanks in advance :)
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 4 жыл бұрын
Daryl TJ Even though some people do mix some find Thomas into the clear gesso, it’s not necessary. Most of the tutorials I have shared is just the clear gesso alone. And it does feel similar to U 400 grit paper but it’s not quite as smooth. I’m people apply to layers for more texture and then use a sheet of fine sandpaper to sand it down for a smoother surface. Hope that helps and I recommend experimenting on some small sample pieces first.

I have some different types of painting canvases that I have used for acrylic painting. Can I use them to do Pastel painting? they are grainy and have texture so I was thinking that they can be used. Anyone know?
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daivd, I've tried painting on canvas before with pastels and even though I like texture, it has more to do with the "grit" than the "texture" when it comes to painting with pastels. I found the surface of the canvas was actually too slick even though it is made up of a woven type of pattern. You might be able to coat it with some clear gesso (which has a gritty result when dry). Regular gesso doesn't have this grit to it though... only the clear. ;). Now, I'm going to have to try it!

My art journey began just 2 years ago when a friend I was visiting was teaching some water colour classes in the coastal park in Folkestone. She insisted I go along even though I was adamant I couldn’t draw a straight line with a ruler let alone draw a picture. She was kind enough not to make me do watercolours but provided me with sketch book and a basic set of graphite pencils. Most of what I did from that day went in paper recycling lol, but I noticed that during the three hours I sat drawing, I lost myself in what I was doing and didn’t once think about my pain. (I have a degenerative spine disorder) so I decided to continue as a form of pain management. I have since exhibited graphite and charcoal works, oils, acrylics and watercolour pieces locally and sold some😱. Things are getting motor difficult moving about now and the cleaning of brushes using oils and acrylics is sometimes just too much so here I am….first bash at pastels but I figured the only thing I need worry about washing at the end….is me😂😂😂😂. I have joined your Patreon group and Monet Cafe on Facebook too, so let’s do this and see what mess I can create with dust😂😂😂. Thank you 🙏 so much for your time and energy, I for one definitely appreciate being able to learn at home rather than all the commotion that is required to get out and travel. God bless and hope to chat soon. Grant Harper, Worcestershire, UK

Grant, this is such a fantastic comment! I was hanging on every word and truly relating to your journey. It’s amazing how art can bring us peace and be so therapeutic. Keep it up my friend and I loved what you said about only washing yourself off after using pastels. That is so true! God bless you and thank you so much for becoming a patron of mine. I sent you a welcome letter that you probably got, But don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
